Sunset Valley Orchids Cycnoches and Catasetum Hybrids

Welcome to the new Catasetinae alliance hybrids and species list. I have been working for years to assemble the finest plants for this breeding program. The plants have been selected on strict criteria of plant vigor, flower color, shape, and bloom count. These qualities lead to AOS awards and as a result much of the breeding stock has now been awarded. This listing represents the finest hybrids in Catasetinae breeding today.

My continued efforts in developing the hybrid genus Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) is evident this season. Fdk. breeding results in flowers that are fragrant of excellent shape have amazing color and produce flowers that often last over 6 weeks! Please take extra time to review these as there are some remarkable crosses here with big potential.

This listing has several Cycnodes hybrids (Cycnoches x Mormodes). This type of breeding produces excellent results. The primary hybrids get the best qualities of both parents, the Mormodes is dominant for color and recessive for form and the Cycnoches is dominant for form and recessive for color. Cycnodes hybrids have proven to be a reliable combination giving excellent results, if you have not grown these they are well worth a try.

If you are just getting interested in the Catasetinae alliance I am sure you will be surprised on how spectacular the flowers are and how easy they are to grow.

If you have been growing Catasetinae you already understand…..

SVO 2213

(Morm. andicola 'Priscilla' AM/AOS x Morm. rolfeana 'Natural World' AM/AOS)

Mormodes species are challenging to grow well. However the primary hybrids (crosses between species) are much easier to grow and have fantastic flower colors. 'Priscilla' has deeply spotted burgundy flowers with an intense dark purple spotted lip, strong up right stems carry 13 -15 flowers each. The rolfeana it is the best I have seen, with surprisingly large flowers, rich burgundy color and darker burgundy spotting, just amazing. Jeff Parker of Exotic Orchid Farm is to be congratulated on the award. This cross has all the potential to be the finest Mormodes cross I have made.

(Fdk. After Dark 'Amazing' x Ctsm. Breckinridge Onyx 'Janet' HCC/AOS)

Fdk. After Dark 'SVO Amazing' (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. Donna Wise) is the most fertile of the Fdk. After Darks, its flowers are every bit as good as the awarded FCC's. The flowers are heavily blotched dark burgundy, have superb shape, excellent presentation and size. Breckinridge Onyx (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs x Ctsm. Bravo) flowers with 15 or more solid oxblood red blooms and has 75% expansum in its breeding. I expect the large flat lip of Breckinridge Onyx will improve the lip size of the After Dark. I believe many flowers will be exceptionally dark red to black. They will also last 4-6 weeks. Very limited…

SVO 2218

(Morm. andicola 'Priscilla' AM/AOS x Cyc. warscewiczii 'Giant Swan' )

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is the key parent in the world famous grex Fdk. After Dark. Here is crossed to Brent's Blackhawk (Ctsm. Donna Wise x Ctsm. tenebrosum). This is very similar to Fdk After Dark but the extra dose of tenebrosum will give additional color. I expect these to have very dark petals and sepals and lighter colored lips. Flower longevity will be 5-8 weeks. Very limited.

SVO 2227

(Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. fimbriatum var. morrenianum 'SVO')

Expect light green flowers with darker green stripes! These will be spectacular.

SVO 2229

Cycd. Bob Lewis (Cyc. warscewiczii 'Giant Swan' x Morm. ignea 'Hawaiian Orchid Source' AM/AOS)

Here we have remade Bob Lewis with a far superior Mormodes parent. The Mormodes ignea has orange-red flowers with heavy blood red spotting. This particular ignea flower has remarkably flat flower form, the flattest I have seen in a Mormodes. The 'Giant Swan' is a huge green flower with white lip. In this type of breeding the Cycnoches will impart its fine form and allow intense color of the Mormodes to come through. These are vigorous, strong growing plants. Expect orange to red flowers with heavy darker spotting. These will be spectacular.

Bob Lewis bloomed the first plant of the original cross and got the first award and AM/AOS. I remade the cross you see above SVO2229, Bob Lewis got a couple plants this summer and has bloomed the first one again!  He received an AM/AOS on it at the Orchid Quest Show in Madison, WI.        Way to go Bob!

SVO 2395

(Ctsm. Frilly Doris 'SVOII' AM/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum 'Big Boy')

Ctsm. Frilly Doris (Ctsm. Doris's Choice x Ctsm. Donna Marie) is a hybrid of pileatum, fimbriatum, and cristatum producing heavily spotted flowers with frilly lips of excellent shape and arrangement. Pileatum will increase the lip size as well as overall flower size. These have excellent vigor and great potential for surprisingly large flowers with big frilly lips. A nice cross produced from from my friend Jamie Lawson of Florida.
