Compact Cattleyas

The compact growing Cattleya’s have been gaining considerable interest with hobbyist for some important reasons.

• Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
• Space savings and more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
• Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
• New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don’t require staking.
• They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The proven breeding plants used in the development of compact Cattleya’s are; Lc. Tokyo Magic, Blc. Love Sound, Pot. Rubescence, Lc. Culminant, Lc. Mini Purple and Slc. Circle of Life. There are also some promising newer plants that have the all the traits of a good parent like: Pot. Martha Clarke, Blc. Izumi Charm, Lc. Dimity, Lc. Love Passion, Slc. Sierra Gem and Pot. Pure Love. This parental stock will impart a strong growth habit and reliable blooming to their progeny.

The crosses listed below are the most modern breeding and will raise the bar for future hybrids. There are many outstanding hybrids here with great potential.

This C. labiata is the rubra form indicating its very dark flower color. The C. violacea is one of the best with its flat, intense dark lavender flowers. Expect very dark lavender flowers, with shape intermediate between both parents. An interesting new primary hybrid. 3” pots .

SVO 1542

(Lc. Dimity ‘SVO’ HCC/AOS x (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Dream Cloud) ‘Heart of Gold')

I am very interested in Lc. Dimity (L. rupestris x C. bowringiana) as a parent, this plant is 12” tall, it is a very compact grower with straight narrow bulbs and a pair of small leaves, a handsome plant. The 7-9 flowers are carried on stiff, upright inflorescences in a lovely light lavender color with a nice contrasting lip; they are reminiscent of a super charged L. rupestris. The (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Dream Cloud) ‘Heart of Gold' is also a beautiful flower with light lavender petals with yellow centers, thus ‘Heart of Gold’. These will have the charm of the rupicolous Laelia in a new color combination. Compact growing plants 3” pots .

SVO 1545

Blc. Brassy Gold (C. Chocolate Drop 'Volcano Queen' x Blc. Love Sound 'Fortissimo' HCC/AOS)

When this grex was originally offered it received 11 AOS awards, I missed out on them, so I remade the cross. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) produce nice stems of well formed, light lavender flowers with darker purple flares and yellow in the lip. I expect Hsinying Excell to be a great breeder like Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Tokyo Magic. These should produce full formed flowers in white to light lavenders with some flared dark lavender. These will also have nice, upright inflorescences carrying 5-7 flowers. Compact growing. 3” pots .

SVO 1619

(Epc. Kyoguchi ‘Happy Field’ x L. Seagulls Tangerine 'SVO' HCC/AOS) Picture of first to bloom.

Here is a new direction in Epi-cat breeding. Kygochi (C. aurantiaca x Enc. aromaticum) has 40-50, fragrant, lemon yellow flowers produced on multiple, branched inflorescences. Seagulls Tangerine (L. harpophylla x L. kautskyi) carries 11-15, bright orange flowers well held above the foliage. (Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO’ AM/AOS x Slc. Sierra Gem 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Lc. Melody Fair) is a large, lovely, light yellow flower of excellent shape that displays well. As you can see by the frequency I am using Blc. Izumi Charm I believe it has potential as a parent. Sierra Gem (Slc. Hazel Boyd x Sl. Pole-Star) carries, 3-5 very flat, chrome yellow flowers with burnt-orange venation. With this cross we are looking to develop a larger version of Slc. Sierra Gem, bright colored flowers with flat & full shape. Compact plants. 3” pots.

Limited 3” pots .

SVO 1648

(Lc. Hsinying Excell var. ‘SVO' x Lc. Mem. Alberto Wenzel 'SVO')

This Hsinying Excell (Lc. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) is a variant of ‘DG’, it produces the same nice stems of 5-7 well formed flowers but the color is a darker purple throughout with darker purple flares and yellow in the lip. Mem. Alberto Wenzel (L. alaorii x C. schroderae) has well shaped flowers that are light powder pink and produced from a small compact plant. The C. schroderae genes will allow for well formed flowers, the L. alaorii will keep the plant size down and the Hsinying Excell will give its good stem, shape and color. Nice compact plants 3” pots .

SVO 1650

(Lc. Hsinying Excell 'DG' HCC/AOS x Lc. Culminant 'La Tuilerie' AM/AOS)

Hsinying Excell (Lc. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) produces nice stems of 5-7 well formed, light lavender flowers with darker purple flares and yellow in the lip. I expect Hsinying Excell to be an excellent parent. Lc. Culminant ‘La Tuilerie’ is the parent of the well known Slc. Circle of Life. The genetic make up of Lc. Culminant includes a significant amount of C. trianaei genes; these are dominant for wide petal width. This is a promising cross, there will be 4-7, large flowers approaching 4” supported on a strong inflorescence. Color will be a dark pink-lavender with some flowers flared darker. These will be stout plants, 8-10” tall, to bloom in a 4” pot, with a self supporting inflorescence, carrying 4-7 large brightly colored flowers. 3” pot .

SVO 1654

(Blc. Izumi Charm 'Janurary' x Slc. Circle of Life 'Trail Blazer' AM/AOS)

Izumi Charm will improve size of the flowers and the Slc. Circle of Life will add shape and color. These will look like large Pot. Martha Clarke. 3” pots.

SVO 1655

(Bc. Sunny Delight 'MAJ' AM/AOS x B. David Sander 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Here is a picture of the first to bloom. This is an interesting hybrid, Sunny Delight (C. aurantiaca x B. perrinii) by David Sanders (B. digbyana x B. cucullata); there is a lot of Brassavola influence here. Bc. Sunny Delight’s plant habit and flowers look similar to a B. perrinii but with bright yellow flowers. David Sanders looks like a huge B. cucullata with flat starry shape and a frilly lip. These are going to be nice, flowers will look like a large, bright yellow, B. cucullata with 3-4 per stem on pencil like Brassavola pseudobulbs. This is a compact grower, very nice. 3” pots.

California Apricot x Soph. coccinea) a strikingly, bright orange-red flower that is a proven breeder. I predict these will look like a scaled up Pot. Pure Love, Slc. Sierra Gem or Pot. Martha Clarke. Lots of potential here for excellent quality flowers. 3” pots .

SVO 1706

(Blc. Fuchs Orange Nugget 'Lea' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'SVO Orange Treat' )

Fuchs Orange Nugget (Blc. Orange Nugget x C. Viola Sanjume) a clustered, bright orange, waxy flower of heavy substance. Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. (L. briegeri 'SVO' x Lc. Culminant 'La Tuilerie' AM/AOS)

L. briegeri has produced several proven hybrids like Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Tokyo Magic, which have been very useful in breeding. Culminant carries up to 5 lavender flowers of full shape and is the parent of the successful hybrid Slc. Circle of Life. The genetic make up of Lc. Culminant includes a significant amount of C. trianaei genes; which are dominant for wide petals. The best of these will have good shape, color, stem habit and be compact growers. This is a breeders cross, many of the offspring will be excellent parents for future hybridizing. Compact growing 3” pots.

(Epi. xanthinum 'Resplendent' CHM/AOS x Epi. Hokulea 'Super Red' AM/AOS) Picture of first blooming.

Resplendent’ CHM/AOS is a dwarf form of Epi. xanthinum, this plant is only 12” tall; it flowers with dense clusters of yellow blooms and is reluctant to keiki and produce aerial roots. The Hokulea forms large clusters of intense bright red flowers and is blooming year round, it is a standard that grows to 3’ tall and with spikes 5’ tall. Breeding for short growing Epi’s has been difficult. Here we believe the xanthinum genes for dwarfism will prevail. These are spiking in 3”pots. 3” pots .

SVO 1960

Pot. Martha Clarke (Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing' x Pot. Martha Clarke ‘Hawaii Trip' )

Here is a second sibling cross of Pot. Martha Clarke. The original grex sold out quickly and has received 4 AOS awards. Martha Clarke is (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life). Both parents are well known and give excellent results. These two siblings have been selected for excellent color, stem and plant habit. F8

Epc. Atrowalker (C. walkeriana v. semi-alba ‘Carmela’ x E. cordigera v. semi-alba ‘Hinomaru’)

This grex was originally made with both alba parents. I registered it after receiving 2 AOS awards for the unusual pure white Epicattleya flowers that resulted, here is a picture of the alba form 111. These flasks were purchased in Japan. The parents of this re-make are semi-alba flowers where the flowers are white with red lips. This is a compact growing plant that looks like the Encyclia with improved flower form. I expect some to be semi-alba. Limited 3” pots .

** Some pictures are representative of the cross and not actual parents.
