Flares and Splashes

Flared petals really add the “WOW” factor! Today we have developed wonderful improved flower forms and an amazing variety of colors. Most of these new hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well on strong stems, that don’t need staking and have compact plant sizes that will bloom in 4”-5” pots.

You will see there are several breeding plants being used extensively: C. intermedia var. aquinii, Lc. Mari’s Song, Lc. Hsinying Excell, Pot. Martha Clarke and Blc. Horizon Flight. These five have been proven as reliable breeding parents. This offering will result in a wide range of flares and splashes. Through careful breeding there has been a nice improvement in flatter and rounder flower forms, plant habit and strong stems.

SVO 1432

Lc. Cariad’s Mini-Quini (Lc. Mini Purple var. coerulea 'Blue Hawaii' AM/AOS x C. intermedia var. aquinii, coerulea 'Haneda' AM/AOS)

Flared, coerulea mini-cats are just becoming available. Mini Purple (C. walkeriana x L. pumila) is an easy growing plant with light blue flowers and a darker blue lip. The C. intermedia ‘Haneda’ AM/AOS is a well formed light blue flower with aquinii flares. All will be blue with about 50% with blue flares; these will also be compact growers.

SVO 1495

Dialc. Silver Maker 'Lullaby Baby' x Lc. Hsinying Excell 'DG' HCC/AOS

This is taking Diacrium (Caularthron) breeding in a new direction. Diacrium hybrids are vigorous growers that enjoy summer heat. Silver Maker (Dialc. Silver Toy x C. Dubiosa) produces shapely, pink flowers on strong stems. Hsinying Excell (Lc. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) develops nice stems of well formed, light lavender flowers with darker purple flares. I believe Hsinying Excell to be a great breeder like Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Tokyo Magic. Expect pink to lavender flowers of excellent shape, some with purple flares. Compact growing.

SVO 1537

C. Claesiana (C. intermedia var. aquinii 'Francisco Miranda' x C. loddigesii 'Aranda B' HCC/AOS)

This is a remake of an old hybrid. With this remake we are using a fine example of the aquinii form of C. intermedia and a very full and large flowered C. loddigesii. Expect 4-6 lavender pink flowers with about 50% with purple petal flares. Excellent vigor and great looking flowers, a classic Cattleya. Similar to SVO 1562 with a different clone of C. intermedia var. aquinii. Compact to large plant sizes .

SVO 1537

C. Claesiana (C. intermedia var. aquinii 'Francisco Miranda' x C. loddigesii 'Aranda B' HCC/AOS)

This is a remake of an old hybrid. For this remake we have selected superb species as the parents. This C. intermedia has very flat flowers and the C. loddigesii a very full and large flowered. Expect 4-6 lavender pink flowers with about 50% with purple petal flares. Excellent vigor and great looking flowers, a classic Cattleya. Similar to SVO 1537 with a different clone of C. intermedia var. aquinii. Compact to large plant sizes.

SVO 1582

C. intermedia var. aquinii 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Carmela's Tropical Beauty 'SVO' AM/AOS

The C. intermedia var. aquinii used here presents its petals in a flat plane with excellent dark flares. Carmela’s Tropical Beauty (Lc. Mem. Robert Strait x Lc. Aloha Case) is beautiful with wide lavender petals and dark spade lip; the blooms are reminiscent of a huge C. walkeriana. We are looking for 3-5 lavender flowers with many having dark purple splashes. Expect a surprisingly large flower on a compact plant.

SVO 1598

Lc. Cornelia var. coerulea 'Floralia' x C. intermedia var. aquinii 'Blue Splash'

Coerulea blue Cattleyas have been popular for some time now, but here we are breeding for splashed petal blue flowers! Cornelia is a fine parent and is a primary hybrid of (L. pumila x C. labiata). By combining it with the blue splash petal C. intermedia var. aquinii, we are looking for light blue flowers, with 50% having darker blue flares. A new color development in compact Cattleyas.

SVO 1806

Blc. Rosebud 'Carmela' x Pot. Creation ‘Summer Choice’ HCC/AOS

Rosebud (Blc. Ronald Hausermann x Lc. Mini Purple) is a compact Cattleya with full shaped purple flowers and dark purple petal flares; it is one of my favorite of this type. Creation (Blc. Chatoyant x Lc. Orglade’s Glow) a light lavender flower with dark purple flares carried on good upright stems. These will produce compact plants, carrying 5-7 blooms on good stems in lavender to purple flower colors all with darker flares. Nice.

SVO 1895

Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'déjà vu' AM/AOS)

This is a remake of an excellent hybrid. Mari’s Song (Lc. Irene Finney x C. Cherry Chip) is a white with pink and purple splash petals carried on stems of 4-6 flowers. By pairing it with L. anceps, you can expect tall stems of flat star shaped, lavender splashed petal flowers. This one is also temperature tolerant and can be grown outdoors in frost free climates.

SVO 1897

Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'White Marble')

This is a similar to SVO1895 but using a white L. anceps. Mari’s Song (Lc. Irene Finney x C. Cherry Chip) is a white with pink and purple splash carrying stem of 4-6 flowers. By pairing it with L. anceps ‘White Marble’, you can expect tall stems of flat star shaped pink flowers splashed with lavender petal. This one is also temperature tolerant and can be grown outdoors in frost free climates.

SVO 1903

Pot. Martha Clarke 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Sc. Beaufort 'Luna Rousse'

Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life) has the good qualities in a compact Cattleya; great color, shape, flower arrangement and plant habit. We have paired it with the mini-cat Sc. Beaufort (S. coccinea x C. luteola) a well known and popular breeder. These will be nice yellows and oranges, with possible red tip flares, on very compact plants.

SVO 1929

Blc. Horizon Flight 'Happy Landing' JC/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Trailblazer' AM/AOS

Horizon Flight (C. intermedia x Blc. Buttercup) a beautifully shaped yellow with red flares and a proven breeder. Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea) is also great breeder; and is dominant for its very round flowers of excellent shape. This amazing cross will have superb shape, flowers in sunset colors, many with showy flares.

SVO 1937

Lc. Alarcon 'Gran Blue Jeanne Marie' AM/AOS x C. intermedia var. aquinii, coerulea 'Blue Splash'

Alarcon (Lc. Canhamiana x C. Dupreana) has received many awards for its size and coerulea color. Splashed blue flowers are a new breeding trend, the introduction of the intermedia var. aquinii, coerulea 'Blue Splash' will give this desired flare to the petals in about 50% of the cross. The best will be very nice.

SVO 2035

Dialc. Silver Heart 'SVO' x Lc. Hsinying Excell 'DG' HCC/AOS

Silver Heart (Dialc. Silver Snowflake x Lc. Angel Heart) a beautiful baby pink flower carried well in groups of 5-7 blooms. Hsinying Excell (Lc. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) develops nice stems of well formed, light lavender flowers with darker purple flares. I expect Hsinying Excell to be a great breeder like Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Tokyo Magic. Expect pink and lavender flowers of excellent shape, some with purple flares.

SVO 2095

Pot. Martha Clarke 'Outstanding' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Red Flare'

Here I have crossed two siblings of the grex named after my wife, Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life). Each of the siblings has excellent color, stem and plant habit. Sib mating will reinforce the good qualities and bring out additional variations in flower color. The original grex sold out quickly and currently has received 6 AOS awards. Compact growing, Recommended.

SVO 2107

Pot. Winners' Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing'

This Winners’ Circle (Pot. Sally Taylor x Slc. Circle of Life) is a stunning cerise red with orange undertones, and has a very full round shape. Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) has strong stems with yellow to orange flowers. We’re looking for more art shade flowers, some will be flared with red. Very promising cross.

SVO 2136

Lc. Hawaiian Fantasy 'Dora' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS

Hawaiian Fantasy (Lc. Summer Snow x Lc. Wayndora) is a nice clusters of light yellow flowers with purple flares that has sired some excellent progeny. Love Sound (Blc. Bouton D’Or x L. briegeri) carries clusters of well shaped, clear yellow flowers on strong spikes; it is a proven breeder with many successful hybrids to its credit. The expectation is for good stems, light yellow flowers, with some having the purple flare.

** Some pictures are representative of the cross and not actual parents.
