Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Kaboom 'SVO' x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love x Blc. Guess What) produces 5-7 sparkling bright yellow flowers with yellow lips and orange in the throat.Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  I am often asked what is meant by 'OPRL' - Orange Petals Red Lip.  This parent imparts good flower size, shape and color; it also blooms two or three times a year.  Here we are looking for well-formed golden-orange flowers with red lips and improved flower count.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Here we combine the good breeding qualities of Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri) and its bright yellow flowers with the vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 blooms.  The result will be self-supporting stems with large, well-arranged clusters of golden yellow flowers.  Easy growers and bloomers, these will be show stoppers in March!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Dream Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

The late Frank Fordyce bred Dream Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Pot. Hisako Akatsuka).  This very successful hybrid has earned 11 AOS awards, based on its rich fuchsia-magenta color, excellent full shape, large lip, and overall size.  I have been using Spring Fires a lot over the last few years.  It's a proven parent and, importantly, breeds for increased flower count, red flower color and strong stems.  Here we are looking for flowers with an intense magenta-red color.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc.  Issy 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade')

Here is another cross that is going to produce very large plants and flower in the summer. Issy (L. tenebrosa x C. leopoldii) stands 28” tall, carrying 5-7, huge 7” bronze flowers with red lips on very strong stems.  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips.  The plant is 2' tall and, when in bloom, the inflorescence adds an extra foot - very spectacular!  Expect these to be big.  Mature plants 2' tall will be no surprise, but when you see the 12-16” inflorescences holding 10 or more bronze-red flowers with dark red lips 3' high off the ground, *that* will be surprising and breathtaking!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Lovely Elaine 'Select' x Pot. Al Thanhauser 'Best One')

Lovely Elaine (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Elaine Taylor)has 4-5 light red flowers with a darker burgundy blush overlay, a different and interesting color combination.  Flowers are well-supported and have nice rounded segments; however, they're a little on the small side.  Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) produces well-rounded dark red flowers with a sparkling texture.  The 4-5 blooms are produced twice a year and are well-supported and arranged.  We can predict that these will produce 4-5 nicely-arranged dark red flowers with darker burgundy lips, and flower shape should be well-rounded.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Shinfong Beauty 'King of Red' x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This type of breeding gives excellent solid red flowers with a waxy sheen and nice spicy fragrance.  Shinfong Beauty (Pot. Shinfong Lisa x Blc. Chia Lin) is a large standard type with a deep red flower and lots of Blc. Oconee influence.  This cross incorporates Chocolate Drop 'SVO,' a cultivar with excellent quality that produces big heads of fragrant, waxy dark red flowers.  These will bloom in rich reds to dark oxblood colors with 4 to 7 flowers held above the foliage.  When they flower in October and November, these will be spectacular!

Slc. Life's Melody (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Mesmerize' AM/AOS)

This cross has been excellent, with great flower color, shape, size and a vigorous growth habit.  Many from the previous cross bloomed in yellow with red lips, while others had yellow flowers with an attractive red overlay and flaring, and a few were lavender with darker flaring.  Every plant that I in saw bloom was nice!  They also had well-rounded flowers and sturdy stems..

Blc. NEW HYBRID(Blc. Tropical Upgrade 'SVO' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The recently-registered Tropical Upgrade (Blc. Guess What x Lc. Tropical Sunset) blooms with 5-7 large orange-gold flowers with red lips on sturdy stems.  Line breeding it back toGuess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) will further intensify the orange-gold color and increase flower count while retaining the red lips and strong stems. A similar cross is SVO 6946.  It will be very interesting to see what comes from line breeding with different combinations of parents.  Same as SVO 6935.

Blc. NEW HYBRID(Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Each of these parents has an excellent breeding record. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has bright golden-yellow color and 9-10 well displayed flowers. Chocolate Drop (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) has many beautifully-arranged waxy red flowers.  The prediction is for large clusters of butterscotch-colored flowers!  However, some will be a bit more orange and others more red.  I'm looking forward to seeing this one bloom.

Pot. Mem. Mario Lanza (C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Carolina Splendor 'Aztec II' AM/AOS)

This type of breeding gives excellent results, as evidenced by multiple awards to the original grex made by Ken Griffith at Lenette Greenhouses.  This remake incorporates Chocolate Drop 'SVO,' which is of excellent quality, and Carolina Splendor with its wine-red flowers having superb shape and form.  These will bloom in rich reds to dark oxblood tones with 4 to 7 flowers held above the foliage.  Expect these to be spectacular when they flower in October and November.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Oceans Heaven' x Blc. Tropical Upgrade 'SVO')

Here we are line breedingTropical Sunset (C. Horace x Lc. Tropic Glow) with its large orange flowers and red lip back to Tropical Upgrade (Blc. Guess What x Lc. Tropical Sunset) and its 5-7 large orange-gold flowers with red lips on sturdy stems.  We should see a nice increase in flower size, maintain the same beautiful colors and only have a modest reduction in flower count. A similar cross is SVO 6929.  It will be very interesting to see what comes from line breeding with different combinations of parents.

Blc. Tropical Upgrade (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Oceans Heaven' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The breeding behind this successful hybrid is Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Lc. Tropic Glow) and Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat).  Tropical Upgrade has reliably produced good-sized flowers in golden-orange with red lips, displayed nicely on strong stems. Here we also have a good opportunity to evaluate the effect of reciprocal breeding; see SVO 6950.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Aloha Jewel 'Tangerine' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

These will bloom with an intense, almost neon orange flower color.  Aloha Jewel (Slc. Tangerine Jewel x Slc. Kauai Starbright) produces tangerine-colored flowers that are real attention getters, and the stems carry 7-9 well-arranged blooms.  Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) carries 9-10 well-displayed bright golden-yellow flowers.  Great color and good flower count from this cross.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Jersey Summer 'SVO' x Pot. Hisako Jewel 'SVO')

Jersey Summer (Pot. Paradise Rose x Pot. Dream Circle) bears flowers with great dark red color, full-shaped segments and beautiful lips. Hisako Jewel (Pot. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Scarlet Jewel) is a small-growing plant with large, brilliant true red flowers.  This cross is aimed at developing a flower with the look of a standard Blc. on a plant that is about half the size at 6-8” tall.  Good flower size, color and shape on a reduced size plant.  This is about as good as it gets.

SVO 6958
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Georgia Peach 'Excellent' x Pot. Fire House 'Love It')

The quest for the perfect compact Cattleya continues.  Georgia Peach (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Smile Again) produces two color forms, a rose-colored flower and the one used here.  'Excellent' is a soft yellow with light rose blush and a contrasting red and yellow lip.  The stems are sturdy and support 4-5 nicely-arranged flowers.  Fire House (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Rubescence) blooms with 4-5 well-supported flowers in light rusty red with a darker burgundy blush/flaring - a color combination not often seen.  These will be compact plants that will produce their first flowers in 3” pots and mature in 4” pots. With plenty of yellow from the influence of Love Sound, these should produce many flowers in yellow shades with blushes, overlays and flaring of reds, burgundy or even rusty oranges. The well-supported flowers will be produced in clusters of 3-5.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Star Fire 'Rubens' x Pot. Rubescent Fire 'Fire Bomb')

The parents Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot Rubescence) and Rubescent Fire (Lc. Spring Fires x Pot. Rubescence) have both produced excellent offspring.  This grex doubles up on the influence of Rubescence, with its dark red color, dark burgundy lip and excellent form.  Combining these qualities with the additional genes from Trick or Treat and Lc. Spring Fires will improve flower count and stem strength.  These are going to produce 5-7 well-supported flowers of good form in dark red with darker burgundy lips on compact plants.  A very promising cross!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Mem. Marcia Dell 'Good Luck Gold' )

I have a lot of trust in the breeding qualities ofGuess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat), with its bright golden-yellow color and 9-10 well-displayed flowers. Mem. Marcia Dell (Pot. Love Passion x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has bright solid golden-yellow flowers on a sturdy stem.  This cross is on track to deliver strong stems of 7-9 and possibly more brilliant rich golden-yellow flowers on compact plants.  A few will have a touch of red in the lips – an attractive contrast.

This type of breeding gives excellent results.  This cross incorporates Chocolate Drop 'SVO,' which is of excellent quality, and Waianae Blaze (Lc. Royal Emperor x Lc. SVO 6272
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Twenty-four Carat 'Lea' AM/AOS x Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS)

As the name implies, Twenty-four Carat has a solid golden yellow flower, and the American Orchid Society Award of Merit (AM/AOS) is a good indicator of its flower quality.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color.  This is all about color, and a deep golden yellow is the expectation.  Plants will mature at 14” tall and have impressive heads of blooms.

Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Lenette' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

This cross has been developed to produce solid golden-yellow flowers.  Carolina Orange D'or has an impressive heritage from orange and yellow parents.  Love Sound consistently delivers good results as a parent, and its bright yellow flowers have played an important role in our hybridizing program.  The flowers of this new grex are going to be a bright golden-yellow with good form, presented well on strong stems.  These are very robust growers showing excellent plant vigor.

SVO 6413
Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Krull-Smith' AM/AOS x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO')

Carolina Orange D'Or (Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth) blooms with deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance, I think the 'Krull-Smith' cultivar is the best of the cross. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has an amazing flower color, a rarely-seen intense yellow.  The plant is vigorous and compact, with strong upright stems, and blooms in late March and April.  Very robust plants have resulted from this pairing.  Flowers will be full-shaped golden yellows with red lips, and strong stems will hold 5-9 blooms.

Blc. New Hybrid (Lc. Tokyo Magic 'Hihimanu' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) has an impressive number of successful hybrids to its credit.  The offspring tend to have well-shaped flowers on sturdy stems holding 3-4 blooms.  Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has clusters of 8-9 bright orange-yellow flowers held above the foliage.  Here we are going to see sturdy stems holding 7-9 bright yellow-orange flowers, all with red lips.  Robust growing and great late March bloomers

Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers make this one of my favorite March bloomers.  Here we combine this grex with the good breeding qualities of Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri) and its bright yellow flowers.  The result will be self-supporting stems with well-arranged large flowers in clusters of golden yellow.  These will be show stoppers in March!

Robust plant growth and productive flowering from this cross.
