SVO 5092
Pot. Martha Clarke 'Nice' x Slc. Tokyo Life 'Orange Select'
Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is my wife's name sake and Tokyo Life (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Circle of Life) is a similar hybrid; both crosses bloomed with a high average of quality most likely due to the influence of the Circle of Life.  This pairing will produce full formed flowers in sunset shades with red flares.  The inflorescences will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage on stems that don't need staking.  I also made a reciprocal cross SVO 5097.   Excellent compact plants to bloom easily in 4” pots
4” pots $20

SVO 5095
Pot. Dream Circle (Slc. Circle of Life 'Trailblazer' AM/AOS x Pot. Hisako Akatsuka 'Volcano Queen' HCC/AOS )
This is a reciprocal cross, to see if there is a difference in the flower and plant habit; the reciprocal is SVO 5081.  These plants mature at 10” tall and are excellent vigorous growers producing beautifully formed 4-5” flowers and are highly recommended.    Flowers from earlier cross , first to bloom from this cross

SVO 5097
Slc. Tokyo Life 'Dec 1st' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'My Beauty'
I will occasionally make reciprocal crosses, where we are evaluating how the pod vs. pollen parent contributes to the offspring; the reciprocal is SVO 5092.   Excellent compact plants good stems, sunset colors, to bloom easily in 4” pots

SVO 5137
Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Pot. Laughing Magic 'SVO'
These are going to be bright yellow with red flares on the petals.  Picotee Flight (Blc. Horizon Flight x Blc. Love Sound) has great shape and color on a compact plant.  The Laughing Magic (Blc. Laughing Boy x Slc. Fire Magic) is a bright yellow with fantastic red flares also on a compact plant.   I am really looking forward to seeing this bloom.

Slc. Angel's Dream (Slc. Bright Angel 'Mark's Red' HCC/AOS x Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS )

Mari's Song has been proven to be a superior breeder. It is reliable to produce good flower quality, flower form, vigorous plants and sometimes fragrance in the offspring.  Bright Angel was used a lot in the late 1990's resulting in many successful hybrids.  This mating will produce a variety of color combinations in yellow and red,  and a few might be lavender.  I expect all will have some degree of flaring.  Check out this one that flowered

Pot. Twenty-four Carat 'Lea' AM/AOS x  Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS
(Blc Lemon Tree x Blc. Yellow Imp) makes up Twenty-four Carat, a brilliant solid yellow flower. The Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Melody Fair) has several important breeding qualities: large well shaped flowers, a dark crimson lip, compact plant and a very strong stem holding 5-6 flowers.  The expectation is for the 4-6 large, shapely flowers in bright yellow with crimson lips on strong stems.  These are going to mature at a 12-16” size.

SVO 5147
Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS x self
The Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Melody Fair) is really a nice plant and flower. I don't often self plants, but in this case I felt it warranted it.  These plants are like a large growing compact Cattleya; they have bulbs that stay close together, vertical leaves, and strong stems holding the flowers above the foliage.  They are also robust growers that tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions and will mature at 12-16” tall

SVO 5148
Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Call 'Fantasy'
Blc. Love Sound and Blc. Melody Fair are the parents of Izumi Charm, an excellent breeder. By crossing it to Love Call (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Waikiki Sunset) expect plants about 10” tall with strong stems of 4-5 yellow flowers with crimson red lips.  This is a great color combination and the plants are vigorous.

SVO 5161
Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Orange Bird'

I am really interested in orange flowers and I think this cross will produce intense orange colors.  Guess What (Lc. Trick or Treat x Blc. Waikiki Gold) has an intense almost glowing orange-gold flower color, with the 7-9 flowers displayed well above the foliage on a strong inflorescence. The Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell) is a true orange flower that produces 7-9 blooms on a long stem.  Similar cross to SVO 5125

Pot. Martha Clarke 'My Beauty' x Slc. Tokyo Life 'Strawberry Splash'

Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is my wife's name sake and Tokyo Life (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Circle of Life) have both bloomed with a high average of quality, most likely due to the influence of the Circle of Life.  This pairing will produce full formed flowers in sunset shades with red flares.  The inflorescences will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage on stems that don't need staking.  This is similar to SVO 5092.   Excellent compact plants to bloom easily in 4” pots.

SVO 5167
Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart' x Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS

'Orange Tart' is one of the best Martha Clarke's: great color, form and flower count. The Izumi Charm has plants like a large growing compact Cattleya, the bulbs at stay close together with vertical leaves, and strong stems holding the light yellow flowers with dark crimson red lips above the foliage.  Here we are after a larger growing but still compact plant with Martha Clarke type flared flowers.  Stems will be stronger and flower size will be improved over the Martha's as well.

Blc. Charmed Life (Blc. Chyong Guu Chaffinch 'Ta Hsia' AM/AOS x Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS)

What a great cross this is!  Large yellow flowers of excellent shape well supported above the foliage.   Plants will mature at 14-16” tall, so it's a standard sized plant, but it will begin to bloom in 4” pots.  I wanted to name this cross Blc. Chyong Guu Chaffinch Charm…..but I was talked out of it!   First to bloom picture

C. J.A. Carbone 'Mother's Delight' x Soph. coccinea 'SVO' AM/AOS

J.A. Carbone is the parent of many famous hybrids like: Lc. Irene Finney, C. Irene Holquin, Lc. Susan Holquin, and Lc. Casitas Spring collectively these have over 70 AOS awards!  'Mother's Delight' has wide petals undoubtedly derived from the C. trianaei in its breeding.  The coccinea is a fine cultivar receiving its AM last year.   This breeding is similar to the very successful hybrid from Frank Fordyce, Slc. Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea).  I am expecting rose-pink to red flowers with wide petals on compact plants.

SVO 5203
Lc. Mildred Rives 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS
This grex has the genetic material to make for some exceptional offspring. I am expecting robust plants with compact growth maturing at 12” tall, possible a bit more.  Strong stems will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage.  Flower will range in color from white to lavender/pink and there is a possibility of a light yellow, all will have dark crimson lips. I am looking forward to seeing this bloom.

SVO 5210
L. Ipanema Beach (L. briegeri 'Star of Brazil' HCC/AOS x L. tenebrosa v. alba 'Thonhauser's Treasure')
An interesting pairing, by using the alba from of L. tenebrosa most of the progeny should be a concolor yellow.  Strong stems will hold the 5-7 flowers above the foliage. Plants will be compact with a tight internode spacing of the pseudobulbs. A nice primary hybrid showing good vigor. I have L. Ipanema Beach made with a dark flowered L. tenebrosa listed under SVO 5580.

SVO 5211
Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x C. mossiae 'SVO' AM/AOS

I made this cross for one main reason…Mother's Day.   These will have 3 to 6, light yellow to white flowers with red-purple lips on strong stems and compact plants.   Some flowers will exhibit purple tips on the petals coming from the mossiae.  You can never have enough flowers for Mother's Day.

Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance' x Blc. Izumi Charm 'Zoom Zoom'

This is a continued effort to improving shape and stem of orange Cattleyas. Love Passion is a deep orange with good stems and a flower count of 7 or more blooms.  Izumi Charm has the potential to allow the orange to come out, with its excellent flower shape and good stem.  Large plants 16” tall but with full-shaped oranges with red lips carried 5-7 on a stem.

SVO 5229
L. tenebrosa v. aurea 'SVO'  x  L. tenebrosa v. alba 'Thonhauser's Treasure'
To the best of my knowledge, this is a first: the pairing of an aurea with an alba L. tenebrosa.  Will some be true semi-albas, white flowers with purple lips?  Or will they be aureas?  Or possibly revert back to a more typical color form?  I'm not sure.  The foliage on the young plants is not exhibiting dark pigmentation like a typical tenebrosa, and this might be a clue to the flower color.  If some come out with white flowers and purple lips, how awesome would that be?  No promises here, but as the old saying goes, “Nothing ventured nothing gained.”

SVO 5231
L. tenebrosa 'Taylor Bronze' AM/AOS x
L. tenebrosa 'None Darker'
'Taylor Bronze' with its cinnamon colored flowers when awarded had 39 flowers and 31 buds on 23 inflorescences, that was surly very impressive! 'None Darker' had deeply colored petals and sepals some of the darkest color I have seen in a tenebrosa. These are showing excellent vigor from the 'Taylor Bronze'.  Expect dark colored flowers and strong growing plants.

SVO 5284   NEW
Lc. Mari's Magic 'H&R' x Blc. Topaz Love 'SVO'

Both of these have very eye catching white flowers with purple and yellow flares produced on a strong stem holding the flowers above the foliage.  Maris' Magic is (Lc. Mari's Song x Lc. Tokyo Magic) and Topaz Love is (Lc. Mari's Song x Blc. Love Sound).  This line breeding will bring out the many possible flower color variations.  I am very interested to see how many pure white flowers with purple and yellow flares are produced.

SVO 5286
C. labiata v. coerulea 'SVO A+' x C. labiata v. coerulea 'TJ'

C. labiata flowers late in the summer a welcome sight, as this is generally a low bloom time for most Cattleya growers. The improvements in coerulea forms have come a long way and this cross incorporated to of my better cultivars.  Both have good growth and flowering habits, they develop new leads easily and the 4-5 flowers are well held just above the foliage. The seedlings are looking really good.

SVO 5326
Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. albida 'SVO' HCC/AOS
The parent Mari's Song (Lc. Irene Finney x C. Cherry Chip) is a white with pink and purple splash petals carried on stems of 4-6 flowers. By pairing it with L. albida, you can expect tall stems of full shaped, lavender splashed petal flowers.  Similar to Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song x L. anceps) I think the L. albida will reduce the plant size and add its charm to the flowers. This one is also temperature tolerant and can be grown outdoors in frost free climates.

SVO 5329
Slc. Wendy Dhu (
Lc. Miss Wonderful 'Billy B.' AM/AOS  x  (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Dream Cloud) 'Heart of Gold')
Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song x L. anceps) is quite an exceptional hybrid possessing the L. anceps charm with arching stems and 3-5 lavender flowers flared with white and purple tips. 'Heart of Gold' is a beautiful tri color flared flower; take a look at the picture.  The expectation is to reduce plant size so mature plants will do well in 4” pots. Flowers will be lavender, flared white with many having some yellow splashes, purple on the tips, stems will be shortened to 12” and flower count will be 4-6.  Nice

(Epi. Pacific Eclipse x Epi. Pacific Canary) 'SVO Yellow Sun' x  Epi. magnoliae 'SVO'

'SVO Yellow Sun' blooms with a beautiful large cluster of bright, pure yellow flowers selected from the breeding of Cal Orchid.  Epi. magnoliae (conopseum) is widely distributed from Florida   Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and in to Louisiana as well as in parts of Mexico.  It is the Northern most growing epiphytic orchid in the USA.   This is also a cold hardy plant, as costal North Carolina can get pretty cold in winter.   This cross will be very easy to grow and flower with clusters of bright yellow blooms on plants staying under 12”.  These will also not produce many kiki's, keeping the plant nice and neat.   The plants are expected to be cold tolerant and should do well outside in most coastal areas that don't experience freezing.  Some plants are developing flowers in 3” pots.  This is a new style of Epi. breeding.

Lc. Sergio Araujo (
L. alaorii 'SVO II' C. trianae 'Cashens' FCC/AOS)
L. alaorii has been doing some remarkable things in breeding.  It reduces plants size while allowing most of the flower size to come thru from the other parent.   These plants will flower between 6” and 8” tall and produce two flowers as large a 4” across. The flowers will look like a C. trianae with its wide petals but on a short chunky plant, very cool, like a dwarf trianae. Expect these to flower twice a year with the primary blooming period at Christmas. This is the first one to flower Pic.

Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #1' x Slc. Circle of Life 'Mesmerize' AM/AOS
I have been using Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) as a parent quite a bit lately.  It has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 showy red flowers with darker red lips AND typically blooms for Valentine's Day.  Circle of Life has many successful hybrids to its credit and is dominant for flower shape in breeding.  We expect the offspring to have good stem strength, holding 3-5 red flowers nicely above the foliage.  Plants will be mature at 8-10” tall and flower well in 4” pots.  An excellent cross!

Lc. Sergio Araujo (
C. trianae 'Cashens' FCC/AOS L. alaorii 'SVO II')
These plants look like small growing trianae, very robust plants with bulb and leaf shape.  L. alaorii is dominant for plant size, flowering 2-3 times a year and is recessive for color and flower size. The flowers look like 3.5” to 4” wide trianae flowers same color and fro the most part shape. The main flowering season is late December and a secondary blooming in July.  A very compact nice primary hybrid, here is picture of the first to bloom Pic 2659

Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS
Strong upright stems of red flowers with darker red lips are what Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) blooms look like. It has produced a number of good hybrids and by pairing it with the proven breeding capabilities of Love Sound (L. briegeri x Blc. Bouton D'Or) will add form and a compact plant habit.  I expect flowers will range is color from red to yellow, with red lips, have well formed petals, and the stems will support the 6-9 flowers above the foliage. Slc. Pure Love 'Be Mine' HCC/AOS  x  Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3'
Here we've taken the mini-catt Pure Love (Slc. Seagulls Apricot x Blc. Love Sound), a grex that's produced many high-quality offspring with sunset-colored flowers on mini plants, and crossed it to (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island), which has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  We expect to get plants that are very compact, about 8-10” tall, and bloom with 5-7 red-orange blossoms on strong stems that present the flowers above the foliage.  This is where 'big meets small,' and the offspring are in-between.

Lc. Aloha Case 'Ching Hua' AM/AOS Lc. Culminant 'La Tuilerie' AM/AOS
Culminant 'La Tuilerie' is on of the tetraploid parents of Slc. Circle of Life it was most likely responsible for COL flower form and size.  By breeding it to this Aloha Case (Lc. Mini Purple x C. walkeriana) which is also a tetraploid will make for some exceptional dark purple, full shaped, large flowers, on compact plants. These will flower well and are demonstrating good growth and vigor.

Pot. California Love (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS  x Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS

This grex was originally made and registered by our friends at Suwada Orchids in Japan. It was a very successful cross that exhibited the high average of flower quality that I am striving for in my breeding.  So I remade it!   Love Sound has proven its self as a valuable parent with many great hybrids to its credit and the same can be said about California Apricot.  This one of those ‘natural’ crosses to make as the genetics are excellent. The plants are compact growing and the well formed flowers are favoring the orange and yellow colors.

Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima'  Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS
Bright orange flowers are hard to come by, so this was a natural cross to make. Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. Waikiki Gold) has an intense orange-gold flower color; it is just a fantastic color!  Guess What also produces 7 to 9 well displayed flowers above the foliage.  These are going to have strong stems of bright orange flowers held high. L. anceps 'Gypsy Skye' x L. Finckeniana 'Kennedys' 4N
Fantastic stems of pink-lavender flowers with purple stripes in the lips.  These will take the cold and do well outdoors in frost-free areas.  This Finckeniana is a mutation from a cloning of 'Kennedys' and produces a much fuller flower than the typical form.  There is a fair amount of controversy about the true parents of 'Kennedys.'  Finckeniana parents are (L. albida x L. anceps), but 'Kennedys' sure looks a lot like Lc. Bowri-Albida (C. bowringiana x L. albida).  Either way, this grex will be nice.
