Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Kaboom 'SVO' x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love x Blc. Guess What) produces 5-7 sparkling bright yellow flowers with yellow lips and orange in the throat.Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  I am often asked what is meant by 'OPRL' - Orange Petals Red Lip.  This parent imparts good flower size, shape and color; it also blooms two or three times a year.  Here we are looking for well-formed golden-orange flowers with red lips and improved flower count.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Dream Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

The late Frank Fordyce bred Dream Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Pot. Hisako Akatsuka).  This very successful hybrid has earned 11 AOS awards, based on its rich fuchsia-magenta color, excellent full shape, large lip, and overall size.  I have been using Spring Fires a lot over the last few years.  It's a proven parent and, importantly, breeds for increased flower count, red flower color and strong stems.  Here we are looking for flowers with an intense magenta-red color.

Here is a different spin with summer-blooming bifoliate breeding.Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers and a contrasting purple-red lip.  This cross has surprising potential!  It may very well produce some of the best-shaped red flowers of summer, and there could be as many as 10 flowers presented well above the foliage.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc.  Issy 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade')

Here is another cross that is going to produce very large plants and flower in the summer. Issy (L. tenebrosa x C. leopoldii) stands 28” tall, carrying 5-7, huge 7” bronze flowers with red lips on very strong stems.  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips.  The plant is 2' tall and, when in bloom, the inflorescence adds an extra foot - very spectacular!  Expect these to be big.  Mature plants 2' tall will be no surprise, but when you see the 12-16” inflorescences holding 10 or more bronze-red flowers with dark red lips 3' high off the ground, *that* will be surprising and breathtaking!

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Slc. Sun Spots 'SVO Best')

This cross will make for well-formed yellow flowers with red spots and flat crimson-red lips. Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc. Jungle Gem) was the first grex with really nice, large yellow flowers and red spots on a compact plant. Sun Spots (C. Mark Jones x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots) is a very successful cross, with large flower size, good color and excellent spots. Mark Jones appears in the background of both parents and has some of the widest petals of any spotted hybrid. I am counting on this influence to widen the petals in this grex. Great color is assured, as both SunCoast Sunspots and Jungle Gem have plenty of vibrant yellow. Plants will mature at 10” tall and start flowering in 3” pots. The reciprocal cross is also available; see SVO 6824.

Here we are expecting well-rounded flower form, broad flat red lips and, of course, yellow with red spots.  The reciprocal cross is also available; see SVO 6827.

Lovely Elaine (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) produces well-rounded dark red flowers with a sparkling texture.  The 4-5 blooms are produced twice a year and are well-supported and arranged.  We can predict that these will produce 4-5 nicely-arranged dark red flowers with darker burgundy lips, and flower shape should be well-rounded.

C. NEW HYBRID(C. Orchidglade 'SVO' HCC/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Orchidglade (C. walkeriana x C. aurantiaca) is a lovely hybrid, producing clusters of orange flowers with yellow lips.  Some of its offspring are very nice, and I discovered that Orchidglade is recessive for color, allowing most of the color from the other parent to come through.  Chocolate Drop (C. guttata (leopoldii) x C. aurantiaca) has many beautiful-arranged waxy red flowers on a strong stem.  This is going to produce large clusters of waxy red to orange flowers supported well above the foliage and is going to be a very showy hybrid!  The reciprocal cross is also available; see SVO 7003.

Picotee Passion x Slc. Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Georgia Peach 'Excellent' x Pot. Fire House 'Love It')

The quest for the perfect compact Cattleya continues.  Georgia Peach (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Smile Again) produces two color forms, a rose-colored flower and the one used here.  'Excellent' is a soft yellow with light rose blush and a contrasting red and yellow lip.  The stems are sturdy and support 4-5 nicely-arranged flowers.  Fire House (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Rubescence) blooms with 4-5 well-supported flowers in light rusty red with a darker burgundy blush/flaring - a color combination not often seen.  These will be compact plants that will produce their first flowers in 3” pots and mature in 4” pots. With plenty of yellow from the influence of Love Sound, these should produce many flowers in yellow shades with blushes, overlays and flaring of reds, burgundy or even rusty oranges. The well-supported flowers will be produced in clusters of 3-5.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Star Fire 'Rubens' x Pot. Rubescent Fire 'Fire Bomb')

The parents Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot Rubescence) and Rubescent Fire (Lc. Spring Fires x Pot. Spring Fires will improve flower count and stem strength.  These are going to produce 5-7 well-supported flowers of good form in dark red with darker burgundy lips on compact plants.  A very promising cross!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Golden Wax 'Lone Star II' HCC/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Years ago I made many nice hybrids with Golden Wax (Slc. Kauai Starbright x C. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat), with its 9-10 well-displayed bright golden-yellow flowers is playing an important role in our breeding programs these days. This cross is going to deliver big clusters of yellow to yellow-gold flowers at a time of year when it will be unexpected – January!

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.”  I was so excited by the potential that I made this cross three times this year!  Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires.  I am so confident that these will turn out great, I'll bet money!  And I'm not a betting man…  These will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry orange to red flowers above the foliage in March.  Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  How's that for confidence in a prediction?

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing'x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The combination of (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is Martha Clarke, also known as “my wife's namesake.”  This grex benefited from the breeding qualities of its parents, inheriting the best qualities of both.  Martha's have great flower color, shape, growth habit and ease of blooming.  Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) also benefited from its parents.  One standout is the cultivar 'SVO,' which has shapely, bright yellow flowers and bold red flares with great presentation. The expectation here is for a range of flower colors, primarily oranges and yellows, with most having red flares. The flowers will be presented nicely and produced 4-5 per stem.

Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Lemon Star' HCC/AOS)

Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker!  For years, the yellow flowers of Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri) have played an important part in SVO's hybridizing program. Its offspring consistently show good breeding qualities: a slightly upswept petal stance, good color, increased flower count, and the development of compact plants with pseudobulbs that cluster tightly together.  This combination of parents creates an excellent opportunity for a hybrid with well-presented golden yellow flowers of good form on a compact growing plant.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

The Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  It imparts fine form, size, color and its ability to bloom up to three times a year.  Each parent has an excellent breeding record, and this is a very promising hybrid!  We are expecting golden/yellow flowers of exceptional shape on plants that will bloom twice a year.

Milton Warne x Lc. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has an amazing flower color, a rarely-seen intense yellow.  The plant is vigorous and compact, with strong upright stems, and blooms in late March and April.  Very robust plants have resulted from this pairing.  Flowers will be full-shaped golden yellows with red lips, and strong stems will hold 5-9 blooms.

Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  The cultivar name 'OPRL' stands for Orange Petals Red Lip.  'OPRL' imparts size, shape, color and the habit of flowering two or three times a year.  This cross has amazing potential!  Plants are expected to produce flowers with superior form in colors ranging from yellow to orange.  All will have contrasting red lips, and they will flower twice a year.  Two groups of the reciprocal cross also are available (SVO 6546, SVO 6701), providing a great opportunity to see the influence of pollen vs. capsule parent.

Pot. New Hybrid (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers make this cross one of my favorite March bloomers.  Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) has 5-6 shapely bright yellow flowers with bold red flares and a great arrangement.  This has the makings of a very colorful cross.  This grex will bloom in March with nicely-shaped flowers in yellow to gold, many with red flares.

Pot. New Hybrid (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers make this cross one of my favorite March bloomers.  The Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  The 5-7 golden yellow flowers, each with a touch of red on the lip, will be presented well on sturdy stems.  If you'd like to evaluate the influence of the capsule parent vs. the pollen parent, the reciprocal is available as SVO 6748.

The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Rubescence) are deep red and produced 5-7 on a strong stem.  This grex was made to further develop clusters of intensely-colored, deep red flowers, held high on sturdy stems.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Golden Treat 'SVO' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

Big heads of red flowers!  Golden Treat (Slc. Golden Wax x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  It is proving to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  These will look really nice when mature!  Plants will stand 14-16” tall and have even taller stems holding 13-15 beautiful flowers.

Pot. New Hybrid (Slc. Rockette 'Little Rock' AM/AOS x Pot. Star Fire 'Rubens')

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Donna Pasanen 'SVO' x Slc. Tropical Star 'Peter's')

How about a near-mini-catt with stems of flared flowers?   This cross is about reducing plant size while maintaining the charm and flower count of its larger relatives.  Donna Pasanen (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. Dream Cloud) has great color with red flares in nice clusters of 5-6 blooms.  Tropical Star (Lc. Tropical Song x Sl. Pole-Star) is a mini-catt with very attractive flared flowers.  This grex was developed by Peter T. Lin of Diamond Orchids and is tremendously charming.  When breeding for longer stems of 5-7 flowers, plants tend to be taller, but in this case the plants should max out at 8-10” tall.  The 5-7 flowers will be flared in sunset colors with red lips and held well on nice stems.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son' x Lc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Love Passion (William Farrell x Trick or Treat; offered as SVO 6741) has been excellent. This cross is taking that breeding one step further.  William Farrell (Pot. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) has soft peach-colored flowers with wonderful form and beautiful arrangement.   Instead of using Trick or Treat, one of its successful offspring, Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) was chosen.  Guess What has many of the good qualities of Trick or Treat: well arranged flowers and high flower count on sturdy stems.  Waikiki Gold modified the color and shape to a rich orange-yellow with wider/fuller floral segments.  I predict that these will be bright golden-orange flowers on strong stems of 5-9 well arranged blooms.  I am looking forward to seeing this flower!
