Lc. Callistoglossa (L. purpurata f. werkhauseri striata 'Diamond Orchids' x C. warscewiczii f. coerulea 'Erik Steven')

Have you ever seen a coerulea Lc. Callistoglossa?   I did once - it blew me away! Excellent parental stock were used here. The L. purpurata f. werkhauseri striata – yes, striata - has dark coerulea veins in the petals.

Lc. Melody An (Lc. Melody Fair 'Carol' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'SanBar Oaxaquena' AM/AOS)

Melody Fair (C. Stephen Oliver Fouraker x C. Horace) is a well-known semi-alba standard Cattleya. Its strong stems carry 4-5 large beautifully-shaped white flowers with red lips. L. anceps 'SanBar Oaxaquena' has a white flower with a bit of purple on the lip tip and purple veins in the throat. We are breeding for semi-alba flower color (white with red lip) and strong stems of 4-5 flowers. These are robust plants that will be easy to grow, have spectacular flower color, and bloom in the early spring.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Ryo Iwata 'Leucadia' HCC/AOS x Pot. Carolina Splendor 'Krull's Ruby')

The progeny from this pairing will have deep red flowers and huge lips in a near black velvet color. Both Ryo Iwata (Blc. Oconee x Pot. Sally Taylor) and Carolina Splendor (Pot. Waikiki Splendor x Blc. Oconee) are noteworthy parents for breeding red Cattleyas. The doubling up of Oconee will assure good lip size and color, and the large flowers should have deep red color and be held on sturdy stems with 3-4 blooms. Impressive.

Koolau Seagulls (C. Wilbur Chang x Lc. Seagulls Milarina) 'Volcano Queen' has 13-15 well-arranged red flowers on a long sturdy stem. Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers. Expect lots and lots of starry red-orange flowers held well above the foliage on strong stems. These will make excellent display plants.

Lc. Trick or Treat Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x self

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) is an iconic hybrid developed by Stewart Orchids. It has excellent breeding qualities and is an outstanding display plant.  'Orange Magic' is the best of the Trick or Treats – it's a robust grower and easy to flower. This is a classic and should be in everyone's collection!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Lenette' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

The full-shaped orange flowers of Carolina Orange D'or (Blc. Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth D'Or) are magnificent, while the 6-8 blooms per stem make this a spectacular show plant. I have admired this plant for years, and we have used it to make many orange and yellow hybrids. Here we combined this parent with Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell), which produces 7-9 true orange flowers on a strong stem. Expect 6-8 excellent orange flowers held nicely on strong stems, and the plants will be robust, hardy growers. Who doesn't love huge heads of orange flowers?

L. Pacavia (L. purpurata 'Hot Nights' AM/AOS x L. tenebrosa 'None Darker')

This grex was registered 123 years ago and has been re-made many times over the years. With this remake we have chosen to use very dark colored flowers. These will be stately-looking plants with straight upright growths that are closely spaced and will bloom reliably in June and July. Mature plants will be showstoppers. Expect 5-7 richly-colored dark purple flowers with bold contrasting lips and impressive flower size.

C. Chocolate Drop (C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS x self)

Chocolate Drop (C. guttata x C. aurantiaca) is one of those iconic hybrids - a good grower with great flowers. All the old-time orchid growers remember the cultivar 'Kodama'. Our plant of 'SVO' is a chance tetraploid, and selfing it will give us nearly identical progeny that look just like the mother plant. The flowers will be fragrant waxy reds with red lips in heads of 15 or more. Despite its many desirable qualities, Chocolate Drop hasn't been available recently, so we're doing our best to make it popular again!

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Dubiosa 'Scully's' HCC/AOS x C. skinneri 'Angela' FCC/AOS)

Recently, I visited Costa Rica and saw hundreds of the best C. skinneri I have ever seen. This re-kindled my interest in breeding with this fantastic species. Dubiosa (C. harrisoniana x C. trianae) has a well-documented history as a parent, and its shapely, long-lived flowers always remind me that spring is just around the corner. The skinneri cultivar 'Angela' has nearly perfect shape, with very wide, rounded petals and a rich dark color. We imagine that this cross will bloom with 7-8 flowers in pink/lavender colors with beautifully shaped lips. This hybrid should flower well for February and March shows.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

The shapely flowers of Hawaiian Discovery (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) are an amazing orange color, 'Fluorescent Orange' to be exact! Love Passion (Pot. William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) is an excellent grower, and plants produce 9-11 large, bright orange flowers held well above the foliage. Orange, orange and more orange will be the result here. Sturdy stems will hold up 6-8 yep, you guessed it, orange flowers. These are exhibiting excellent vigor and will make outstanding show plants.

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Lc. Candy Corn (C. Dubiosa 'Scully's' HCC/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Candy Corn was made by Stewart Orchids in the 1980's. I remember the white flowers with bright canary-yellow flares on the petals - such a novel color combination. The parents of this grex are very impressive. Dubiosa (C. trianae x C. loddigesii) had a strong track record as a parent at Stewart Orchids. Its 5-8 flowers are well-displayed and almost white with a hint of lavender in the lip.  Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat), another famous Stewart cross, produces impressive heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers and has a long history as an influential breeder. The flower color of Candy Corn is not quite what you would expect: white with bright canary-yellow flares on the petals and a canary-yellow lip. Very memorable!

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Orange Nuggett 'Kadaoka' HCC/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Orange Nuggett (Blc. Manu Akaka x Bc. Daffodil) has sired many impressive and well-known hybrids, including Iwan. Appleblossom, Blc. Momilani Rainbow, and Fuchs Orange Nuggett. Its flowers are deep orange and have heavy substance. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) produces clusters of 8-9 vibrant orange flowers. It is one of my favorite March bloomers and has been playing an important role in our breeding program. We expect heads of 5-7 solid orange flowers with improved shape. Guess What will add segment width, and Orange Nuggett will increase the fullness of the lip. A great orange hybrid!

C. NEW HYBRID (C. lawrenceana 'SVO 16' x C. aurantiaca 'Gold Country' 4N)

This exceptional lawrenceana can carry up to 16 flowers - that's a lot for this species! As with all lawrenceana, the flower shape is poor and the petals are floppy. The most attractive part of the flower is the tubular dark purple lip. This cultivar of aurantiaca is a tetraploid, and the flowers are fuller and have heavier substance than diploid forms. The offspring mostly will be triploids. Plants will grow well and be very floriferous. These will resemble C. Guatemalensis (C. aurantiaca x C. skinneri) but with more flowers and a tubular lip.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette No.3')

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.” Over the years, I've been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Spring Fires and Trick or Treat. I am very confident that these will turn out great! Plants will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry red to orange flowers above the foliage in March. Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Jalapa 'Ruben's 4n' x C. bowringiana 'SVO' 4n)

Jalapa (C. leopoldii x L. milleri) 'Ruben's 4n' is truly outstanding. Crossing it with the equally outstanding 4n bowringiana will deliver high-quality tetraploid progeny. Flowers in clusters of 10-15 will be deep purple, and some might just have spotting.  A very novel hybrid.

Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has a high flower count, with 9-11 bright orange blooms on a strong stem. Now imagine adding this to the amazing, shapely orange flowers of Hawaiian Discovery (Orange Nuggett x Bouton D'Or).  We do like big heads of bright orange flowers, and these will contribute particularly vibrant colors for March.

Pot. Linda Vee (Lc. Trick or Treat 'SVO' 4n x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Trick or Treat is a great breeder for clusters of orange flowers. This vigorous grower blooms reliably each spring. Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) resembles a super Trick or Treat with larger flowers.  So why breed it back to Trick or Treat?  This cross will reinforce high flower counts, and we expect each inflorescence to hold 14-16 bright orange blooms high above the foliage. Very impressive!
