Large / Standard Cattleyas

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.”  Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires, and I am very confident that these will turn out great!  Plants will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry red to orange flowers above the foliage in March.  Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  There is also a great opportunity to see the effect of capsule vs. pollen parent, as the reciprocal cross is also available; see SVO 6737.

Lc. Koolau Treat (Lc. Koolau Seagulls 'Volcano Queen' AM/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Koolau Seagulls (C. Wilbur Chang x Lc. Seagulls Milarina) 'Volcano Queen' has 13-15 well-arranged red flowers on a long sturdy stem.  Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  Lots and lots of starry red-orange flowers on strong stems above the foliage.  These will make excellent display plants.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' AM/AOS)

Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nugget x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker.  Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  These are going to be orange on orange, with a touch more orange for good measure!  Robust growing plants and ease of flowering are other important characteristics of this very promising cross.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Maui Plum 'Volcano Queen' AM/AOS x Blc. Chinese Bronze 'Marco Polo')

Some of my favorite cattleyas are the bifoliates, and I've made an effort to acquire many choice plants as breeding stock.  Over the past few years I've seen little breeding along these lines, so, since they're some of my favorites, I made a few crosses to share with all you Cattleya lovers!  Maui Plum (Lc. Summerland Girl x C. leopoldii) blooms with strong inflorescences that can produce as many as 26 dark mahogany flowers with a few random burgundy spots and a contrasting lip. Chinese Bronze (C. bicolor x Blc. Chinese Jade) has very flat, rounded and wide bronze petals with a bright lip reminiscent of the bicolor parent.  Here we have high flower count and excellent color crossed with very wide petals and great color, and these summer bloomers will give great color in the heat.  I have a very good feeling about this cross!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Al Thanhauser 'Best One' x Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade')

Here is a different spin with summer-blooming bifoliate breeding.Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) produces well-rounded dark red flowers with a sparkling texture.  The 4-5 blooms are produced twice a year and are well-supported and arranged.  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers and a contrasting purple-red lip.  This cross has surprising potential!  It may very well produce some of the best-shaped red flowers of summer, and there could be as many as 10 flowers presented well above the foliage.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc.  Issy 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade')

Here is another cross that is going to produce very large plants and flower in the summer. Issy (L. tenebrosa x C. leopoldii) stands 28” tall, carrying 5-7, huge 7” bronze flowers with red lips on very strong stems.  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips.  The plant is 2' tall and, when in bloom, the inflorescence adds an extra foot - very spectacular!  Expect these to be big.  Mature plants 2' tall will be no surprise, but when you see the 12-16” inflorescences holding 10 or more bronze-red flowers with dark red lips 3' high off the ground, *that* will be surprising and breathtaking!

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Ruby Wax 'SVO' AM/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Ruby Wax (Slc. Mahogany Drop x Slc. Golden Wax) produces a well-presented cluster of 20+ waxy, intense wine-red flowers. This Chocolate Drop (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) has very high flower count and beautiful arrangement.  This cross is all about delivering big clusters of 15-20 waxy bright red flowers on upright stems in summer. The first plant flowered check out this picture  It had a strong spicy fragrance too!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Shinfong Beauty 'King of Red' x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This type of breeding gives excellent solid red flowers with a waxy sheen and nice spicy fragrance.  Shinfong Beauty (Pot. Shinfong Lisa x Blc. Chia Lin) is a large standard type with a deep red flower and lots of Blc. Oconee influence.  This cross incorporates Chocolate Drop 'SVO,' a cultivar with excellent quality that produces big heads of fragrant, waxy dark red flowers.  These will bloom in rich reds to dark oxblood colors with 4 to 7 flowers held above the foliage.  When they flower in October and November, these will be spectacular!

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Tropical Upgrade 'SVO' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The recently-registered Tropical Upgrade (Blc. Guess What x Lc. Tropical Sunset) blooms with 5-7 large orange-gold flowers with red lips on sturdy stems.  Line breeding it back toGuess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) will further intensify the orange-gold color and increase flower count while retaining the red lips and strong stems. A similar cross is SVO 6946.  It will be very interesting to see what comes from line breeding with different combinations of parents.  Same as SVO 6935.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Each of these parents has an excellent breeding record. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has bright golden-yellow color and 9-10 well displayed flowers. Chocolate Drop (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) has many beautifully-arranged waxy red flowers.  The prediction is for large clusters of butterscotch-colored flowers!  However, some will be a bit more orange and others more red.  I'm looking forward to seeing this one bloom.

Pot. Mem. Mario Lanza (C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Carolina Splendor 'Aztec II' AM/AOS)

This type of breeding gives excellent results, as evidenced by multiple awards to the original grex made by Ken Griffith at Lenette Greenhouses.  This remake incorporates Chocolate Drop 'SVO,' which is of excellent quality, and Carolina Splendor with its wine-red flowers having superb shape and form.  These will bloom in rich reds to dark oxblood tones with 4 to 7 flowers held above the foliage.  Expect these to be spectacular when they flower in October and November.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Oceans Heaven' x Blc. Tropical Upgrade 'SVO')

Here we are line breedingTropical Sunset (C. Horace x Lc. Tropic Glow) with its large orange flowers and red lip back to Tropical Upgrade (Blc. Guess What x Lc. Tropical Sunset) and its 5-7 large orange-gold flowers with red lips on sturdy stems.  We should see a nice increase in flower size, maintain the same beautiful colors and only have a modest reduction in flower count. A similar cross is SVO 6929.  It will be very interesting to see what comes from line breeding with different combinations of parents.

Blc. Tropical Upgrade (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Oceans Heaven' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The breeding behind this successful hybrid is Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Lc. Tropic Glow) and Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat).  Tropical Upgrade has reliably produced good-sized flowers in golden-orange with red lips, displayed nicely on strong stems. Here we also have a good opportunity to evaluate the effect of reciprocal breeding; see SVO 6950.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Orchidglade 'SVO' HCC/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Orchidglade (C. walkeriana x C. aurantiaca) is a lovely hybrid, producing clusters of orange flowers with yellow lips.  Some of its offspring are very nice, and I discovered that Orchidglade is recessive for color, allowing most of the color from the other parent to come through.  Chocolate Drop (C. guttata (leopoldii) x C. aurantiaca) has many beautiful-arranged waxy red flowers on a strong stem.  This is going to produce large clusters of waxy red to orange flowers supported well above the foliage and is going to be a very showy hybrid!  The reciprocal cross is also available; see SVO 7003.

I have a lot of trust in the breeding qualities ofGuess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat), with its bright golden-yellow color and 9-10 well-displayed flowers. Mem. Marcia Dell (Pot. Love Passion x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has bright solid golden-yellow flowers on a sturdy stem.  This cross is on track to deliver strong stems of 7-9 and possibly more brilliant rich golden-yellow flowers on compact plants.  A few will have a touch of red in the lips – an attractive contrast.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Golden Wax 'Lone Star II' HCC/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Years ago I made many nice hybrids with Golden Wax (Slc. Kauai Starbright x C. Chocolate Drop).  I learned that Golden Wax was dominant in breeding for heads of brightly colored flowers. The cultivar 'Lone Star II' produces big clusters of waxy yellow flowers.  Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat), with its 9-10 well-displayed bright golden-yellow flowers is playing an important role in our breeding programs these days. This cross is going to deliver big clusters of yellow to yellow-gold flowers at a time of year when it will be unexpected – January!
