Large / Standard Cattleyas

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

Pot. NEW HYBRID(Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance' x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO Flame' AM/AOS)

Love Passion (Pot. William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) 'Island Romance' is an excellent grower; plants produce 15-17 orange flowers well above the foliage.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas x Blc. Love Sound) is a beautiful plant that blooms with 12-14 lovely flowers in bright yellow with red flares on the petals and lateral sepals.  These will have big clusters of flowers on strong stems, in colors from orange to yellow, many with red flaring.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.”  I was so excited by the potential that I made this cross three times this year!  Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires.  I am so confident that these will turn out great, I'll bet money!  And I'm not a betting man…  These will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry orange to red flowers above the foliage in March.  Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  How's that for confidence in a prediction?    Also offered as SVO 6737; the reciprocal is SVO 6697.

SVO 6251
Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Fordyce Fantasy 'SVO Best' x Lc. Straight Answer 'No Question' AM/AOS)

Fordyce Fantasy (Blc. Horizon Flight x C. aurantiaca) produces a beautiful cluster of waxy yellow flowers with bright red flares.  This plant was selected for breeding due to its exceptional growth habit and ability to bloom with 7-9 flowers per stem.  Straight Answer (C. Milton Warne x Lc. Trick or Treat) holds 9-11 yellow flowers with red flares above the foliage, usually twice a year.  I have been interested in developing superior strains of plants with stems that carry 10 or more yellow flowers with red flares.  This may do it!

Pot. Mem. Tanya Nash (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son')

Bright orange flowers with fabulous shape are hard to come by, so I had to make this cross.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker!  William Farrell (Pot. Helen Veliz x Blc. Llano) has flowers that are light salmon/pink/orange in color and have excellent shape with a beautifully formed lip.  One of the parents of William Farrell is Helen Veliz, an excellent breeder for orange flowers.  So does this sound good?  Expect full-formed Blc. type flowers in orange.  These plants have excellent vigor and look very promising!

Pot. New Hybrid (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Lenette' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance')

Carolina Orange D'Or (Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth) blooms with deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance.  'Island Romance' has a higher flower count than most other cultivars of Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell), with 7 to 11 well-displayed orange flowers. The objective here is improved form with higher flower count, and of course, bright oranges to bloom in March.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Straight Answer 'No Question' AM/AOS)

Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) has 5-6 shapely bright yellow flowers with bold red flares, each having excellent shape and great arrangement.  Straight Answer (C. Milton Warne x Lc. Trick or Treat) displays its 9-11 yellow flowers with red flares above the foliage, usually twice a year.  The development of superior strains that produce strong stems carrying large numbers of yellow flowers with red flares has been of great interest, and this cross has the potential to achieve this breeding goal.

SVO 6272 NEW
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Twenty-four Carat 'Lea' AM/AOS x Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS)

As the name implies, Twenty-four Carat has a solid golden yellow flower, and the American Orchid Society Award of Merit (AM/AOS) is a good indicator of its flower quality.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color.  This is all about color, and a deep golden yellow is the expectation.  Plants will mature at 14” tall and have impressive heads of blooms.

SVO 6312
Lc. New Hybrid (Lc. Tropical Rainbow 'Montclair' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

Big heads of red flowers are always impressive, and we can predict with certainty that this cross will deliver!  Each parent flowers with 5-7 blooms held on strong stems above the foliage.  These will mature into excellent show plants with great appeal.

SVO 6329
Blc. New Hybrid (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lynette #3' x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips. It is proving to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas' x Blc. Love Sound) has yellow flowers with red flares on the petals and sepals, held on strong upright stems.  Great stems and clusters of flowers are assured.  Predicting colors is a bit more difficult.  I am expecting mostly reds; however, some will have flared flowers.  As they mature, these plants will develop into nice flowering specimens.

Blc. New Hybrid (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' AM/AOS x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas x Blc. Love Sound) has yellow flowers with red flares on the petals and sepals, held on strong upright stems.  This cross will produce big heads of starry orange-red flowers, many with flares.  Plants will bloom reliably in March.

SVO 6375
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Roy's Magic 'Chinese New Year' x Slc. Golden Wax 'Lone Star II' HCC/AOS)

Red and yellow is a welcoming color combination in January, so how about yellow flowers and red flares?  The blooms of Roy's Magic (Pot. Burana Beauty x Lc. Tokyo Magic) are produced from a robust plant on strong stems that hold 5-7 yellow flowers with red flares above the foliage.  As a bonus, this flowers in late January and again in late summer.  Golden Wax (Slc. Kauai Starbright x C. Chocolate Drop) also blooms in late January with big clusters of waxy bright yellow flowers held above the foliage. Expect strong stems holding clusters of flowers, many of which will be flared, but a percentage will also come in solid colors.

SVO 6413
Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Krull-Smith' AM/AOS x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO')

Carolina Orange D'Or (Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth) blooms with deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance, I think the 'Krull-Smith' cultivar is the best of the cross. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has an amazing flower color, a rarely-seen intense yellow.  The plant is vigorous and compact, with strong upright stems, and blooms in late March and April.  Very robust plants have resulted from this pairing.  Flowers will be full-shaped golden yellows with red lips, and strong stems will hold 5-9 blooms.

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Golden Treat 'SVO' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' )

Big heads of red flowers!  Golden Treat (Slc. Golden Wax x Lc. Trick or Treat) has been a great hybrid for SVO.  It grows really well and blooms in late January with big heads of waxy red flowers.  Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  It is proving to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  These will look really nice when mature!  Plants will stand 14-16” tall and have even taller stems holding 13-15 beautiful flowers.

Koolau Seagulls (C. Wilbur Chang x Lc. Seagulls Milarina) 'Volcano Queen' has 13-15 well-arranged red flowers on a long sturdy stem.  Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  Lots and lots of starry red-orange flowers on strong stems above the foliage.  These will make excellent display plants.

Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  These are going to be orange on orange, with a touch more orange for good measure!  Robust growing plants and ease of flowering are other important characteristics of this very promising cross.

Lc. Magic Bell (C. loddigesii 'Tony Bos'x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' AM/AOS)

The cross was originally made at Stewart Orchids.  I always admired this grex but was unable to get any plants for my collection, so I made the cross myself!  These were high-flower-count plants, many with 9-15 blooms per stem.  The best cultivars produce multi-colored flowers in lavender-pink with darker lavender-pink splashes and brilliant golden tips.  Excellent plant vigor and very interesting flower color possibilities!

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son' x Lc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Love Passion (William Farrell x Trick or Treat; offered as SVO 6741) has been excellent. This cross is taking that breeding one step further.  William Farrell (Pot. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) has soft peach-colored flowers with wonderful form and beautiful arrangement.   Instead of using Trick or Treat, one of its successful offspring, Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) was chosen.  Guess What has many of the good qualities of Trick or Treat: well arranged flowers and high flower count on sturdy stems.  Waikiki Gold modified the color and shape to a rich orange-yellow with wider/fuller floral segments.  I predict that these will be bright golden-orange flowers on strong stems of 5-9 well arranged blooms.  I am looking forward to seeing this flower!

Lc. Fire Gem (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic 'AM/AOS x Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' HCC/AOS)

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  Aussie Sunset (Lc. Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has a red-orange flower with a yellow splash, and the blooms are held above the foliage in a cluster of 4-6. Great potential here for orange flowers with red flares.  Plants are good growers and will produce 7-9 flowers per stem, possibly more.

Carolina Orange D'Or (Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth) blooms with deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance.  Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) produces vibrant orange-yellow flowers in cluster of 8-9.  As you can tell by its popularity in the breeding program, this is also one of my favorites!  Fantastic orange to golden-orange flowers, well supported and arranged. Robust plant growth and productive flowering from this cross.
