Large / Standard Cattleyas

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

L. Femme Fatale (L. Pacavia 'Impressive' x L. tenebrosa 'Paul' AM/AOS)

This cross will produce large flowers in amazing lavender/copper colors with darker purple lips. Pacavia is purpurata x tenebrosa, and the reinforcement of tenebrosa in this cross will assure strong stems of 5-6 large flowers measuring 6-7” across. These stately-looking plants will have straight upright growths that are closely spaced and will bloom reliably in June and July. Mature plants will be show stoppers, with their impressive flower size and color.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Mrs. Mahler 'Memoria Fred Tompkins' AM/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Hey all you bifoliate Cattleya fanatics! Can you envision how these will look? Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor x C. leopoldii) and Chocolate Drop (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) are primary leopoldii hybrids, which theoretically makes this 50% leopoldii and 25% each bicolor and aurantiaca.  Here's my vision: vertical plants with sturdy upright inflorescences carrying 20 large, waxy deep red flowers with bright red spade-shaped lips. What do you think?

C. Greensleeves (C. Atalanta 'Hawaii' x C. leopoldii f. alba 'Emerald Green')

Here is an attempt at breeding for green flowers with white lips. This Atalanta (C. leopoldii x C. warscewiczii) is a true alba, and the flowers are pure white with impressive large lips influenced by the warscewiczii. The leopoldii 'Emerald Green' is from the selfing of renowned C. guttata v. leopoldii f. alba 'Fields' and is also a true alba. We are expecting the green petals and sepals of 'Emerald Green' to have a good chance at coming out in the progeny, and with both parents' white lips…well this might just be the cross to deliver elusive green flowers with white lips.

Blc. Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Schroder's Love (C. schroderae x Love Sound) lends its great flower form, size and strong stem to this grex. Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) adds its high flower count of 9-11 bright orange blooms on a strong stem. The great color and presentation of the first plants to flower inspired the name "Kaboom!"  These are really nice and not to be overlooked!

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Halcyon' AM/AOS)

The success of Blc. Kaboom was the inspiration for this cross. Schroder's Love (C. schroderae x Love Sound) has great flower form and size, and its strong stems hold 4-5 flowers just above the foliage. Over the years Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) has sired hundreds of successful hybrids, the most notable being Love Sound (Bouton D'Or x briegeri), one parent of Schroder's Love. This 'line breeding' will accentuate flower form by continuing to flatten and round out the petal shape, keep flower count at 5-6 blooms per stem, and most importantly develop the highly desirable orange flower color and orange lip. So nice…

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.” Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires, and I am very confident that these will turn out great! Plants will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry red to orange flowers above the foliage in March. Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display. The reciprocal cross is available as SVO 7863.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Cherokee')

The shapely flowers of Hawaiian Discovery (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) are an amazing orange color - 'Fluorescent Orange' to be exact! Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) is the parent of Hawaiian Discovery, making this cross a fine example of line-breeding. This cross will reinforce these desirable qualities: good flower form, vivid color and robust, upright plant habit. Look for these to have clusters of 5-6 well-shaped, bright orange flowers held high above the foliage on sturdy stems.

Lcr. NEW HYBRID (Dialc. Silver Horace 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Blc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This is the first Diacrium (syn. Caularthron) bicornutum cross we have made in a while. Diacrium Silver Horace (Dialc. Silver Star x C. Horace) blooms with 5-6 shapely soft pink flowers with dark purple lips. Sturdy stems carry the flowers well above the leaves. Magic Melody (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Lc. Melody Fair) has large white flowers with a touch of purple on the petal tips and yellow markings on the lateral sepals. The lip is intense crimson red, and strong stems easily hold the 5-6 flowers. This cross is a Laeliocatarthron (Lcr), and plants will have strong stems holding 5-6 shapely, soft pink flowers with ruffled, boldly-colored lips, carried well above the foliage.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son' x Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS)

Almost all well-rounded orange Cattleya crosses originate from hybrids with either Blc. Orange Nuggett and/or Blc. Bouton D'Or in their breeding lines. William Farrell (Slc. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) has a distinguished breeding heritage, and the cultivar 'Native Son' has impressive flowers in a beautiful soft peach with strong stems holding 5-6 well-arranged blooms above the foliage. The well-presented, shapely flowers of Hawaiian Discovery (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) are an amazing fluorescent orange color. We believe this cross will have a strong tendency toward orange flowers, though some may be salmon colored (which will be amazing). The excellent shape of each parent's flowers is going to be dominant, as are the strong stems. This cross has all the hallmarks of a great hybrid.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.” I was so excited by the potential that I made this cross twice this year! Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires. I am so confident that these will turn out great, I'll bet money! And I'm not a gambling man… These will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry orange to red flowers above the foliage in March. Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  How's that for confidence in a prediction? The reciprocal is available as SVO 7782.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS x Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son')

I have wanted to make this cross for some time, but Goldenzelle hasn't held capsules long enough to produce viable seed. Persistence paid off, and we finally got a good capsule that held until the seeds had matured. Goldenzelle (Blc. Fortune x C. Horace) is a standard-sized plant with bulbs 18” tall, and plants require a 7-8” pot at maturity. Flowers are large, over 6” across, and held well on strong stems in groups of 3 and 4. As the name indicates, the cultivar 'Lemon Chiffon' is yellow and has excellent shape. The petals are wide, and the lip is yellow with a bright red spot. For years, this Goldenzelle has been considered one of the top standard yellow Cattleyas ever produced.  The ancestry of William Farrell (Slc. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) reads like a veritable “who's who” of Cattleya breeding in the 1950's and 60's, and 'Native Son' has impressive flowers in a beautiful soft peach with strong stems holding 5-6 well-arranged blooms above the foliage. Here, we predict four important things: excellent flower shape, large flower size, a strong stem carrying 4-5 flowers, and flower colors in shades of peach and salmon. I am very optimistic about the potential from this mating.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Joanna Rose 'SVO semi-Alba')

One of my favorite Cattleya color forms is the semi-alba, white petals and sepals surrounding a dark purple-red lip. The color contrast is fantastic! The flowers of Magic Melody (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Lc. Melody Fair) are spectacular, with strong stems carrying 5-6 pure white blooms tipped in red with yellow on the sepals and a beautiful, velvety crimson lip. Joanna Rose (Lc. Melody Fair x Lc. Liptonii) has amazing, full-shaped flowers, which are nearly pure white. The lip is purple and yellow, and the 4-5 shapely flowers are held well on a strong wiry stem. We are very hopeful that these will be desirable semi-alba flowers. However, some may be pink with red lips, which won't be a disappointment either. In either case, flower shape and color contrast will be fantastic!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Carolina Orange D'Or 'Lenette #2' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

We are always looking for opportunities to make breakthrough crosses, and trying a few combinations outside the normal boundaries sometimes delivers good results. Over the years, we have admired the individual qualities of both of these parents as well as the excellent progeny that both have produced. The flowers of Carolina Orange D'Or (Blc. Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth D'Or) are magnificent, with excellent orange color, full shape and 6-8 blooms per stem, making a spectacular show. Love Passion (Pot. William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) is an excellent grower, and plants produce 9-11 bright orange flowers held well above the foliage. This cross will produce shapely orange flowers on sturdy stems of 7-9. Outstanding, show-stopping display plants will be the result.

Blc. Pat Wood (Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Halcyon' AM/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) is a famous orange and a well-respected parent. The flowers have good shape and color, and the plants are very robust growers and reliable bloomers. Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers from strong-growing plants and has been an important parent. These are showing great vigor, and the plants are very robust. We expect large heads of well-supported brightly-colored orange flowers on plants that are easy to grow and bloom.

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) is a well-respected parent. The flowers have good shape and color, and the plants are robust growers and reliable bloomers. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is a favorite breeder of mine. It's dominant for vibrant orange-yellow flowers on strong stems carrying clusters of 8-9 blooms. This is one of those “you have to make it” crosses, and we expect these to have 5-9 well-held flowers in bright orange.

Blc. Carolina Orange Glow (Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Halcyon' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) combined with Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) – what a great idea! A couple years ago I was going through an old filing cabinet and rediscovered a large stack of Orchid catalogs from Stewart, Armacost & Royston, Beall, Jones and Scully, Fordyce, and this treasure trove included several from Lenette Greenhouses. They listed this cross (Blc. Bouton D'Or x Lc. Spring Fires) and were promoting it as an exceptional pairing. After some research, we learned that two of the offspring received AOS awards. And guess what? I have both parents in my breeding collection. The flowers from this cross will be in shades of orange, shapely, and well-supported, in clusters of 5-6.

Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade' x Lc. Mishima Luster 'Jean' FCC/AOS)

Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips. The plant is 2' tall and, when in bloom, the inflorescence adds an extra foot – truly spectacular! Mishima Luster (Lc. Wine Festival x C. schilleriana) can bloom with as many as 15 flowers per inflorescence. The flowers are a waxy raspberry color with a few darker spots, and the spade lip is bright royal purple. These plants will be tall, most likely reaching a height of 20” or more, and the stately inflorescence will carry 12 to 18 very large, waxy flowers with bright contrasting lips. Just a stunning floral display! If you have bench space or can make more space this is a cross that you must have.

C. Chongkolnee (C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS x C. bowringiana 'SVO 4n')

Ok - how awesome is this? I saw these blooming at the Redland show in Florida 9-10 years ago, and they were spectacular. I have always wanted to re-make it, but in order to improve upon the previous grex I needed a 4n bowringiana. Once that problem was solved the cross was re-made. This Chocolate Drop (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) is also 4n, and most of the progeny should be 4n as well. This cross will produce high flower counts on tall plants, and the blooms in waxy solid burgundy colors will be arranged nicely, making for a spectacular display in summer.
