Sunset Valley Orchids 2015 Cattleya List

Mini Catts

The mini-cats are plants that will stay under 6” tall and bloom in a 3”-4” pot. It is not uncommon for mini-cats to bloom twice a year. Mini-cats are making a comeback, the modern breeding has developed significant improvements where the plants are heat tolerant, produce large flowers, and have brilliant colors and superb flower shape. There is always space for more of these in every collection.

This 2015 list is the “best ever” Mini-Catt offering.  The quality of the plants and the large flower sizes produced from 4” tall plants is just astounding.   These crosses are setting a new standard. Take an extra long look at this list!

Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS  x Slc. Fire Fantasy' H&R'
California Apricot is the famous breeder of these well know hybrids: Slc. Hazel Boyd, Slc. Final Touch, Slc. Seagulls Apricot, Pot. Scully’s Circle, and Slc. Mango Spice.  Combined these 5 hybrid have 100 AOS awards!!!  California Apricot brings a high average of quality to its offspring. Fire Fantasy breeds for superior flares in its offspring and has produced some very nice hybrids. These will have a different flower color from most flare/splash breeding, expect intense orange flowers with bright yellow flares, well rounded shape and flowering twice a year as an extra bonus. This is a picture of the first plant to bloom Pic1

Love Castle (Lc. Jose Dias Castro x Sl. Psyche) has very unique intense deep purple-fuchsia colored flowers on a mini plant.  Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot ‘Orange Circle’ HCC/AOS x Soph. coccinea) is a brilliant red flower of excellent form which needs little introduction, as it has played an important role in breeding for many years.  These will flower in deep reds to purple-reds with strong little stems holding the flowers well.

Soph. Wild Fire (Soph. coccinea 'SVO' AM/AOSSoph. wittigiana 'Pink Opal' AM/AOS)

What a great mini-catt, the plants are 3” tall plants and have flowers that are 3” across! Much easier to grow than either parent these are showing “hybrid vigor”.  Fantastic color andsuper flat flowers, the plants are blooming size in 3” pots.Check out this picture of the first to bloom Pic1

Slc. Dal's Buddy (Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire'Sc. Beaufort 'Big Circle')

I have seen pictures of this in the Australian orchid magazines and on their web sites but never here in the USA. The grex was originally made by David Littman and several plants were cloned and sold all over Australia.  I have always wanted some of these, so I had to make the cross myself, and here it is.   The plant matures at 6-8” tall. Many flowers come out flared with the excellent shape imparted by the Beaufort.

Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL'Slc. Cosmic Delite 'SVO' HCC/AOS

Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) ‘OPRL’ has  Orange Petals and Red Lip. The 3.5” flowers and the 6” tall plant blooms 3 times a year, has a pleasing shape and is a proven breeder. The Cosmic Delite (yes that is the correct spelling) is (Slc. Bright Angel x Sc. Batemanniana); it is mini-catt standing at just 4” tall with a red flower, flared with yellow and has good shape.  This cross will produce many full shaped flowers, in intense red-orange with some flared or striped.  Plant will be about 5” tall and bloom twice a year.  Picture of one of the first to bloom Pic

Lctna. Peggy San 'Gold Country'  x Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sauno' mutation

Peggy San (Lc. Peggy Huffman x Bro. sanguinea) is a true mini cat favoring the plant habit and flower shape of the Broughtonia with the Peggy Huffman adding size and flares.  The ‘Gold Country’ is a mutation out of the cloning of the Stewart’s Orchids plant ‘Cynosure’ AM/AOS.   Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x C. aurantiaca) has yellow flowers on branched inflorescences that are highly fragrant.  These will stay small standing at 6” tall and begin to flower at a young age.  Broughtonia-shaped flowers with flares in red or possibly yellow, and when mature inflorescences will be branched. A very unusual cross in very limited supply.

SVO 5383
(Slc. Tangerine Jewel x Lc. Sacramento Rose) 'SVO' x Pot. Red Blast 'SVO Red Red'

These are going to be dark red-purple Mini-catts with even darker lips. The plants will mature at 5” tall and flower in 3” pots. These should also flower 2-3 times a year as this grex is influenced by the L. alaorii in the breeding of Sacramento Rose. Cutting edge Mini-cat breeding for very rounded flowers.

SVO 5424
Slc. Beau's Apricot Gem (Sc. Beaufort 'Luna Rousse'  x Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'SVO Brilliance')

Bright tangerine orange to red flowers on true mini sized plants.  Flowers will be long lasting and very round.  Easy to flower and will bloom twice a year in a 3” pot.  This is a very nice mini-catt and good on a windowsill with the first of these now blooming. Here are pictures of some of the first to bloom Pic1 , Pic2

SVO 5428
Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'SVO Brilliance'  x (Slc. Chili Sauce x Sc. Cosmos) 'SVO Redondo'

This is mini-catt breeding at its finest for dark red flowers. Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot x Soph. coccinea has brilliant red flowers of superior shape. The ‘SVO Redondo’ had almost perfectly round flower form and a bright red color. These will be mini-catts, flowers red with just a few having yellow vein like splashes in the petals.

Slc. Mini Beau 'SVO'  x Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'SVO Brilliance'

Red, red, and red Mini-catt.   Plants will mature at 4”-5” tall, flowers will be red….

Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO' x Slc. Cosmic Delite 'SVO' HCC/AOS

The grex Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) has excellent rounded shape, red-orange flowers and a lip that is red with a yellow throat. Cosmic Delite (Slc. Bright Angel x Sc. Batemanniana) and no it’s not a spelling error, but it is a Mini-catt with very showy red flowers with yellow flaring in the petal, it is an excellent breeder of flares.  I am expecting compact plants standing 5”-6” tall with well rounded flowers red and orange-red with many having desirable red and yellow flaring.

SVO 5524
Lc. Mem. Alberto Wenzel 'SVO'  x Sc. Beaufort 'Big Circle'

Mem. Alberto Wenzel (C. schroderae x L. alaorii) produces a plant and flowers that look a bit like a miniature C. schroderae with light pink petals and sepals with an orange-yellow spot in the throat. Beaufort (Soph. coccinea x C. luteola) is an excellent parent and breeding plant. This is a very interesting direction in breeding with this second generation L. alaorii hybrid.   I am expecting plants to mature at 5” tall, be nice and robust with well formed flowers in soft pastel colors.  I am really looking forward to seeing these bloom.

Compact Catts

Compact growing Cattleyas have gained considerable interest with hobbyist for these important reasons.

  • Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
  • They are space savings so with more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
  • Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
  • New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don’t require staking.
  • They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The proven breeding plants used in the development of compact Cattleyas are; Lc. Tokyo Magic, Blc. Love Sound, Pot. Rubescence, and Slc. Circle of Life. This parental stock will impart a strong growth habit and reliable blooming to their progeny.

The new crosses for 2015 represent the most modern breeding in this category.  These will raise the bar for floriferousness and plant habit.  Everyone needs to make space for these, the flower to plant size ratio is amazing and many will flower twice a year.  There are many fine crosses listed and I have spent hours described the offspring as best as I can, so read on!

SVO 5097
Slc. Tokyo Life 'Dec 1st'  x Pot. Martha Clarke 'My Beauty'

Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life) is my wife’s name sake and Tokyo Life (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Circle of Life) is a similar hybrid; both crosses bloomed with a high average of quality where almost ever flower was nice.  This pairing will produce full formed flowers in sunset shades with red flares.  The inflorescences will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage on stems that don’t need staking.   Excellent compact plants to bloom easily with a high average of flower quality.

SVO 5146
Blc. Oconee 'Mendenhall' AM/AOSPot. Lebenkreis ' 5 Alarm'

The dark red Oconee is famous for producing a high average of quality offspring. Lebenkreis (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) has flowers that are deep red with wide round petals on 8” tall plants.  This cross will produce flowers of exceptional form, with very dark red blooms and dark burgundy lips all on compact plants standing at 8-10” tall.  An excellent red Cattleya hybrid.

SVO 5148
Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS  x Pot. Love Call 'Fantasy'

The breeding behind Izumi Charm is (Lc. Melody Fair x Blc. Love Sound) and Love Call is (Blc. Waikiki Sunset x Sc. Beaufort).  Good solid genetics is backing up this cross. Izumi Charm has a large light yellow flower with crimsons lip on a strong stem. Love Call has the flower shape of a standard large Cattleya but the flower is only 3” across and the plant is 8” tall.  Here we are developing compact plants to bloom in 4” pots with flowers that have the shape of standard Cattleya blooms.  Flowers will be in sunset colors with contrasting dark red lips on strong stems holding the flowers high above the foliage.

SVO 5152
Slc. Angel's Dream 'SVO' HCC/AOS  x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL'

Angel’s Dream (Slc. Bright Angel x Lc. Mari's Song) has the most amazing red flower with yellow flare, it stops people in their tracks when in bloom in the greenhouse. Golden Circle ‘Orange Petals Red Lip’ really has orange petals and a red lip, it flowers 3 times a year and the flower quality is amazing. It has proven to be a reliable breeder which produces offspring of a high average of quality.  We are expecting free flowering plants in mostly dark red with darker contrasting red lips and many with red and yellow flares on very compact plants. The potential for superior plants is high with this grex.

Blc. George King 'Serendipity' AM/AOSBlc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS

So much breeding these days is towards intense bright colors,  I must admit I am attracted to them, but what about pastel colors?  Here is a cross that will deliver just that.  These will bloom in a range of lovely soft colors, ranging from light rose/pinks to soft yellows.  The plants will be compact flowering in 4” pots with flowers presented above the foliage.

Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sano' Mutation  x Ctna. Why Not 'Super Nova' AM/AOS

What a novelty hybrid this is! One parent, Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x Gur. aurantiaca) has yellow flowers on branched inflorescences that are highly fragrant and Why Not (Gur. aurantiaca x Bro. sanguinea) had deep red flowers of excellent shape.  This makes a hybrid genus named Guaritoniclia, say that three times quickly ;-)  Vigorous plants have resulted and they should start to flower in 3” pots and mature in 4” pots. I expect the Why Not will dominate for flower color and shape, I do think some will exhibit the fragrance and branching habits from the Kyoguchi.  I am eagerly waiting for the blooming of this cross.   There is also the reciprocal available with a different Why Not parent SVO 5261

SVO 5166
(Blc. George King x Sl. Orpetii) 'Highland'  x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL'

The cultivar ‘Highland’ has been in my collection for many years, it is a compact plant that flowers twice a year. The flower shape is superb with very flat and full petals combined with a classic Blc. style lip makes this a special plant.  Golden Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Goldenzelle) has orange petals and a red lip, amazing flower quality and flowers 3 times a year.  I am expecting these to bloom in orange colors with the classic Blc. lip in dark red, and not to mention, flat flowers with wide petals, on free flowering compact plants. This cross is starting to sound almost too good to be true.

Lc. Mildred Rives 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS

This grex has the genetic material to make for some exceptional offspring. I am expecting robust plants with compact growth maturing at 12” tall, possible a bit more.  Strong stems will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage.  Flower will range in color from white to lavender/pink and there is a possibility of a light yellow, all will have dark crimson lips. I am looking forward to seeing this bloom.

L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS  x L. kautskyana 'SVO' AM/AOS

This L. milleri has the true red flower color desired by collectors and produces 11-15 per inflorescence, a higher than average flower count for most milleri. The L. kautskyana flowers with 20 large, bright orange flowers that all open simultaneously, very showy.  These will flower with , wiry stems carrying 10 -15 bright red/orange starry Brazilian jewels!  Small compact plants to flower in 3” pots.  Reciprocal is SVO 5403 Hybrids between two species or ‘primary hybrid’ like this Rupicolous Laelia cross exhibit a phenomena call ‘hybrid vigor’ where increased plant vigor occurs and the offspring are easier to grow and flower over the species.

L. Ipanema Beach (L. briegeri 'Star of Brazil' HCC/AOS x L. tenebrosa v. alba 'Thonhauser's Treasure')

An interesting pairing, by using the alba from of L. tenebrosa most of the progeny should be a concolor yellow.  Strong stems will hold the 5-7 flowers above the foliage. Plants will be compact with a tight internode spacing of the pseudobulbs. A nice primary hybrid showing good vigor. I have L. Ipanema Beach made with a dark flowered L. tenebrosa listed under SVO 5580.

Bc. Sunny Delight 'MAJ'  x Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sano' mutation

Sunny Delight (B. perrinii x C. aurantiaca) has bright yellow starry shaped flowers produced from a vigorous plant with pencil thin pseudobulbs. Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x C. aurantiaca) has yellow flowers on branched inflorescences that are highly fragrant. This is a very novel cross the hybrid genus name will be Guarvolclia (Gvl.)!   The plant habit is a bit different with slender bulbs and narrow leaves.  I expect flowers to be held on 4-6” stems with starry flowers in yellow with red striped and spotted lips, some will be fragrant and some may even have branched inflorescences.

Lc. Sergio Araujo (L. alaorii 'SVO II'C. trianae 'Cashens' FCC/AOS)

L. alaorii has been doing some remarkable things in breeding.  It reduces plants size while allowing most of the flower size to come thru from the other parent.   These plants will flower between 6” and 8” tall and produce two flowers as large a 4” across. The flowers will look like a C. trianae with its wide petals but on a short chunky plant, very cool, like a dwarf trianae. Expect these to flower twice a year with the primary blooming period at Christmas. This is the first one to flower Pic.

Strong upright stems of red flowers with darker red lips are what Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) blooms look like. It has produced a number of good hybrids and by pairing it with the proven breeding capabilities of Love Sound (L. briegeri x Blc. Bouton D'Or) will add form and a compact plant habit.  I expect flowers will range is color from red to yellow, with red lips, have well formed petals, and the stems will support the 6-9 flowers above the foliage. All in all a good grex for stems of bright color.

This grex was originally made and registered by our friends at Suwada Orchids in Japan. It was a very successful cross that exhibited the high average of flower quality that I am striving for in my breeding.  So I remade it!   Love Sound has proven its self as a valuable parent with many great hybrids to its credit and the same can be said about California Apricot.  This one of those ‘natural’ crosses to make as the genetics are excellent. The plants are compact growing and the well formed flowers are favoring the orange and yellow colors.

Standard

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

This 2015 season offering is focused on plants that produce big clusters of flowers held high above the foliage. This ‘Pompom’ type flower presentation makes for spectacular exhibition plants.  Big heads of blooms in your display can really add some of that ‘snob factor’ (we all like it when our plants are the best in the show.)   If you have the room for these they are well worth growing.

Epidendrums have become popularized and many of hobbyist are successful growing them. This cross will be very easy to grow and flower with clusters of bright yellow blooms on plants staying under 12-14”.  These will also not produce many kiki’s keeping the plant nice and neat.   The plants are expected to be cold tolerant and should do well outside in most coastal areas that don’t experience freezing.  Many are already spiking in 3” pots.  This is a new style of Epi. breeding for smaller plants. Buttercup) was awarded in 1972 the flowers were described as being a golden yellow with overtones of apricot and has proven its self as a breeder of Orange flowers.  This is line breeding for bright orange flowers with good shape and be held above the foliage.  The reciprocal is also available as SVO 5501

Lc. Elegans (L. purpurata v. striata 'Claire' AM/AOS x C. leopoldii ‘SVO’ AM/AOS)

So here is Elegans in the more normal color form.  The purpurata is of superior quality and is an excellent example of the v. striata. The leopoldii ‘SVO’ flowers with 42 blooms on a stem, yes 42 flowers (the average for awarded plants is closer to 27 flowers) as a result this strain of Elegans will have more flowers than previously seen.  These are robust plants with good stems holding the flowers well above the foliage. See the coerulea (blue) area of the web site for Lc. Elegans v. coerulea.

Lc. Issy SVO' HCC/AOS  x Schom. schultzei 'Old Sherry'

These are going to be tall plants with very impressive stems and dark wine red flowers.
Issy (L. tenebrosa x C. leopoldii) produced 5-6 flowers dark bronze flowers with burgundy colored lips that are 7” across, twice a year!  The plant is tall, 2’ tall. The schultzei is a larger plant as well standing at 20” with inflorescences 6’ long that have a cluster of 12-15 dark glossy red flowers and purple lips.   Big plants, robust bulbs, long stems of large deep burgundy red flowers and purple lips, if you have the space this will be impressive!!!

Slc. Golden Treat 'Big Red' x self

Golden Treat (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. Golden Wax) was the first hybrid I made, that’s over 20 years ago and it is still has a place in the nursery. A very robust and strong growing cross that produces big heads of shiny, waxy red flowers with lots of yellow in the lips, plants mature at 20” tall and bloom in late January.

Spotted

Spotted flowers have been a favorite of mine for years. Seeing those wonderful spots in the heat of summer is a spectacular sight. Today the development of spotted breeding include flowers that bloom in colors ranging from cream, yellow, pink, orange, green, and bronze. They can be speckled, spotted and blotched. These new spotted hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems, and have compact plant habit to bloom in 4”-5” pots, with the larger growers needing 6” pots to mature in.

C. Caudebec Candy (Lc. Lulu 'Hot Pink' AM/AOS x C. Caudebec 'Marty's Orchids')

This grex is producing the best pink flowers with amethyst spots I have seen.  Expect tall growing plants, flowers with wide petals and 8 blooms per stem.  This grex also has flowers with excellent lasting qualities.  Picture of first to bloom 2185

Yellow flowers with red spots what a great combination! This is one of the best crosses to produce plants that will mature at 10” tall; carry 4-6 full shaped 3.5” flowers in bright yellow with red spots and dark red lips.  I can’t imagine better breeding of this type.

C. Princess Clementine 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots 'SVOII' AM/AOS

Princess Clementine is a primary hybrid between (C. aclandiae x C. dowiana). It is a large flower with a surprising 5 blooms per stem, a rather high count considering the parentage.  The SunCoast Sunspots (Blc. Waianae Leopard x Slc. Jungle Elf) is the largest flowered yellow with red spots yet awarded.  From the Princess Clementine it is expected that the flower size will increase and the SunCoast Sunspots will add color and spots. I expect these flowers will be nicely fragrant too.  This is one of those ‘very interesting’ hybrids, a bit variable in flower color but, some will be great!

Jungle Gem (Slc. Precious Stones x Slc. Jungle Elf) is a darling mini with bright yellow flowers, red spots and a red lip. The cultivar ‘SVO II’ is the best of the grex and is a significant improvement in breeding large yellow flowers with red spots. These are easy to flower and will start blooming in the 3” pots.  Bright yellow petals and sepals spotted red with bright red lips, nice!

This is a different type of cross for SVO. Spotted flowers have always been a passion of mine, but most spotted crosses flower in the summer and fall, however this grex will flower in March!  C. amethystoglossas pink flowers with pink spots and darker lip are spectacular, check out the picture of ‘SVO’. The aurantiaca from the selfing of ‘Mishima Spots’ and was selected for its flower quality, orange blooms and red spots, and a vigorous plant.  I am expecting these to be spotted flowers but no hybrids have been flowered with the spotted aurantiaca yet, so we are not 100% sure yet of the outcome.

How do you make Leoloddiglossa (Loddiglossa x C. leopoldii) better, add bicolor!  The broad bicolor lip will improve the lip width of the progeny.  I expect the flowered will be similar in color, shape and flower count as in Leoloddiglossa, but much wider lips will give a fullness not previously seen. This is very nice, unique, a first in spotted Cattleya breeding, and not to be missed out on.

Coerulea

In Cattleyas the ‘coerulea’ color or ‘blue’ as it is referred to is very intriguing and rare in nature. In the early years of blue breeding there were not many known species in this coerulea color, so breeding was limited to a few possibilities. Almost always the crosses were slow to mature and produced large plants due to the influence of the known blue species at the time. Today, we have many species and hybrids to breed with, and the quality of blue flowers has been improving rapidly. Plant habit and speed to bloom have also been addressed; we now have compact plants blooming in 4” pots

For 2015 this offering is focused on producing large 4-6” flower size.  Yes, some will be 6” flower size! I am also working with the bloom period; expect most of the crosses to flower in February, March and into April.  Having coerulea flowers at the height of the show season is always a nice contrast for an exhibit.

Don’t miss the spotted blue crosses…… These are a great addition for the discriminating collector.

Lc. Indigo Dawn 'Blue Tuesday'  x Lc. Lake Tahoe 'Blue Lip'

These will be large 5”-6” coerulea (blue) flowers on plants of 8-12 tall.  Here we are expecting higher flower count with 4-5 flowers on mature plants.   Indigo Dawn (C. Dupreana x C. Mini Purple) is a compact plant with excellent form, color and flowers twice a year. Lake Tahoe (L. sincorana x Lc Tahoe Rose) has excellent shape, flat flowers, a compact plant habit and flowers twice a year.

Lc. Alarcon v. coerulea 'Gran Jeanne Marie' AM/AOS x Lc. Cornelia v. coerulea 'Floralia'

Here is a different approach in blue breeding.  The grex Alarcon has produced numerous awards, the flowers are surprisingly large at 7” across with big beautiful dark coerulea lips. The two parents of Alarcon are Lc. Canhamiana (C. mossiae x L. purpurata) and C. Dupreana (C. warscewiczii x C. warneri) together they produce large growing plants, the cultivar 'Gran Jeanne Marie' which stands 20” tall and needs a 8” pot.  The Cornelia is (C. labiata x L. pumila) and produces a 4” flower on a plant only 8” tall that blooms well in a 4” pot.   Our experience and shown that even a small percentage of L. pumila in a cross will reduce plant size.  With this grex it is expected that Cornelia will half the plant size of Alarcon making the mature offspring 10” tall.  Interestingly, I expect flower size to be in the 5” range. All will be coerulea with very dark coerulea lips. If you are into blues this is a very promising hybrid.

Species

Collecting select and awarded Cattleya species has been a passion of mine for many years. The species collection is now over 700 plants! Recently, I started breeding the “best of the best” in an effort to have these choice and often hard to find Cattleya species available for the hobbyist. Here are some of the first things to come from the lab with many more to follow in coming years.

The 2015 list should be of interesting to all species collectors. The L. anceps are some of the best around and this is a deep offering of many fine crosses.  I am working towards having plants produce 5 and 6 flowers per stem, which is a very high flower count for L. anceps!   Also check out the C. leopoldii (tigrina) crosses.  It has taken a long time before these crosses could be made; I wanted the best plants with high flower count and best flower quality before making them.  Don’t miss these as this quality is hard to come by.  When was the last time you have seen L. alaorii for sale, tetraploid C. aclandiae, or C. schilleriana and what about C. trianaei v. coerulea?   I hope you enjoy the species list.

SVO 5029
L. alaorii 'SVO' HCC/AOS x L. alaorii 'SVO II'
What a great mini-catt species! L. alaorii plants stand less than 2.5” tall, bloom 2-3 times a year and have the cutest light pink flowers.  Originally described in 1967 but then lost to cultivation to be rediscovered in 1989, it is quite unusual to have such a desirable species just appear 24 years ago.  It is still hard to find in collections.  If you love Cattleya species you must make room for one or two.  These are best grown mounted or in a small basket.

Gur. aurantiaca 'Mishima Spots'  x Gur. aurantiaca 'SVO Spots 2'

Orange flowers with red spots…. how can this be?   Yes it’s true and quite possibly the most unusual color form for Gur. aurantiaca.  ‘Mishima Spots’ is the original plant displaying the spotting characteristic, and ‘SVO Spots 2’ is a select plant from the selfing of ‘Mishima Spots’.  Expect clusters of bright orange flowers densely spotted red, very cool.  Many plants have sheaths showing now.

C. trianae v. coerulea '#2' x C. trianae v coerulea '#1'

Good trianae coeruleas are very hard to come by. The breeding for the coerulea form has been quite elusive. Many coerulea trianaes crossed together produce normal colored (lavender) flowers.  This grex is from a cross that produced all coerulea offspring. This cross uses the two best siblings from that cross and it is expected that all the progeny will be coerulea.  The best will be very valuable. Also available in the reciprocal SVO 5193

C. mossiae 'Mrs. Venezuela' x C. mossiae 'SVO'

What a great species, mossiae matures two growths each season and then both flower simultaneously. These two cultivars bloom with 4-6 flowers per inflorescence a higher than average count and have particularly nice lip markings.

C. labiata v. coerulea 'SVO A+' x C. labiata v. coerulea 'TJ'

C. labiata flowers late in the summer a welcome sight, as this is generally a low bloom time for most Cattleya growers. The improvements in coerulea forms have come a long way and this cross incorporated to of my better cultivars.  Both have good growth and flowering habits, they develop new leads easily and the 4-5 flowers are well held just above the foliage. The seedlings are looking really good.

C. warscewiczii 'Alexanders Var.' x C warscewiczii 'Michael' AM/AOS

This has to be my favorite labiata Cattleya species, tall plants, huge flowers often 8” or more in natural spread, and beautiful lips, what more is there to ask for?  ‘Alexanders Var.’ is very floriferous with 6-8 flowers; ‘Michael’ is a superb grower producing 4 flowers.  This is a very desirable Cattleya species not often seen for sale and when it is, it’s very expensive.  This cross had good germination and growth in the flask the seedlings have also shown good vigor. It looks like these plants are going to be good growers, important for C. warscewiczii.
