Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Martha's Charm 'Mother's Day' x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

The flowers of Martha's Charm (Pot. Martha Clarke x Blc. Izumi Charm) have been a beautiful soft yellow with a touch of red on the lip, and the wide well-rounded petals are particularly nice. Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) has yellow flowers with a red lip and is a great breeder that has produced many successful hybrids. Tokyo Magic imparts good shape, strong stems and a compact plant habit. Here we are looking for 4-5 well-supported yellow flowers with deep red lips, wide petals and excellent shape.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Newberry Fireworks 'Mendenhall' HCC/AOS x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Here we are breeding for orange/yellow flowers with red flares on the petals, with the addition of arching inflorescences about 10-12” long carrying 4-5 flowers. Pretty cool and very new for flared flower breeding. Newberry Fireworks (Lc. Island Springs x L. anceps) has a long stem from L. anceps and very attractive flared flowers. Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) has shapely, bright yellow flowers with bold red flares held well on long stems.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Memoria Jim Nikou 'James' HCC/AOS x Blc. Toshie Aoki 'Pizzaz' AM/AOS)

The Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip. Its excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent. Toshie Aoki (Blc. Faye Miyamoto x Blc. Waianae Flare) has been around since the early 1980's, and its large, bright yellow flowers with red flared petals and red lips have commanded attention for over 40 years. Will this be the perfect compact yellow Catt with a red lip? These should produce compact plants with large 4” bright yellow flowers with red lips, and some will have a red splash in the petals. Could this be better than Pot. Little Toshie?

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Izumi Charm 'Zoom Zoom' x Pot. Memoria Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Lc. Melody Fair) is a larger plant, standing 14” tall.  It has a compact growth habit with strong stems carrying 5-7 well-shaped, light yellow flowers with bright crimson red lips. Memoria Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip. Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent. Here we are looking for Izumi Charm to increase flower size and count, and add a strong stem. Memoria Jim Nickou will strengthen flower color and reduce the plant stature to 12” or less. Flowers will be yellow, and the full-shaped ruffled lips will be red.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Carolina Orange D'Or 'Lenette #2' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

We are always looking for opportunities to make breakthrough crosses, and trying a few combinations outside the normal boundaries sometimes delivers good results. Over the years, we have admired the individual qualities of both of these parents as well as the excellent progeny that both have produced. The flowers of Carolina Orange D'Or (Blc. Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth D'Or) are magnificent, with excellent orange color, full shape and 6-8 blooms per stem, making a spectacular show. Love Passion (Pot. William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) is an excellent grower, and plants produce 9-11 bright orange flowers held well above the foliage. This cross will produce shapely orange flowers on sturdy stems of 7-9. Outstanding, show-stopping display plants will be the result.

Pot. Telling Lies (Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Telling Lies produces beautiful orange flowers suffused red and covered with a sparkling diamond dust texture. The flowers have good shape and are held on strong inflorescences. These are robust plants with a compact habit, maturing at 10” tall. We don't often re-make crosses, but this was so nice we wanted to offer it again. On a more selfish note, we also wanted to see more of these flower, as the first batch sold out quickly.  The name of this grex is interesting - we are not “telling lies” about its quality! First to bloom PICTURE

Blc. Pat Wood (Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Halcyon' AM/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) is a famous orange and a well-respected parent. The flowers have good shape and color, and the plants are very robust growers and reliable bloomers. Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers from strong-growing plants and has been an important parent. These are showing great vigor, and the plants are very robust. We expect large heads of well-supported brightly-colored orange flowers on plants that are easy to grow and bloom.

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) is a well-respected parent. The flowers have good shape and color, and the plants are robust growers and reliable bloomers. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is a favorite breeder of mine. It's dominant for vibrant orange-yellow flowers on strong stems carrying clusters of 8-9 blooms. This is one of those “you have to make it” crosses, and we expect these to have 5-9 well-held flowers in bright orange.

Blc. Carolina Orange Glow (Blc. Bouton D'Or 'Halcyon' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

Bouton D'Or (C. Wolteriana x Blc. Buttercup) combined with Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) – what a great idea! A couple years ago I was going through an old filing cabinet and rediscovered a large stack of Orchid catalogs from Stewart, Armacost & Royston, Beall, Jones and Scully, Fordyce, and this treasure trove included several from Lenette Greenhouses. They listed this cross (Blc. Bouton D'Or x Lc. Spring Fires) and were promoting it as an exceptional pairing. After some research, we learned that two of the offspring received AOS awards. And guess what? I have both parents in my breeding collection. The flowers from this cross will be in shades of orange, shapely, and well-supported, in clusters of 5-6.

The Memoria Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip. The excellent flower shape and twice-a-year blooming make this a desirable parent. The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers make this cross one of my favorite March bloomers. We are expecting 5-7 golden yellow flowers, each with a touch of red on the lip, presented well on sturdy stems. An exact remake of SVO 7872. You can tell how I feel about this pairing if I made it twice!
