Sunset Valley Orchids 2014 Catasetinae Plant Offering

Never before has there been such a comprehensive list of Catasetinae species and hybrids offered for sale.  It has taken many years to collect, select, and develop these breeding lines. The quality of the breeding stock is without compare, and these plants will set the new standard for flower quality, vigor, and your enjoyment.  The focus this year has been in 5 areas: Cycnoches, Mini-Catasetums, Species, Mormodias, and Fredclarkearas.

There will be two releases of the new Catasetinae hybrids, this being the first and the second to follow in approximately 4-5 weeks.

Over the last few years we have been working on the development of advanced breeding lines for Cycnoches.  I just love the elegant swan-shaped blooms; they truly are the most breathtaking flowers of the genus. They are also a bit more challenging to grow. We have been selecting Cycnoches for our breeding program using several criteria, like plant vigor, flower quality, color, and resistance to the occasional back bulb die off.  Our Cycnoches species and hybrids will demonstrate these qualities, and the more complex Cycnoches crosses have been through this selection process for 2 or 3 generations, resulting in significant improvement in ease of culture and better resistance to back bulb die-off.

This year we have re-introduced some of the successful “mini-Catasetum” crosses and introduced several very promising new ones. This is a new plant form that has started to gain considerable attention from collectors. These new hybrids are compact growers and flower 2-4 times a year! How can you go wrong with that?

There also have been lots of requests for species.  When breeding species, it’s important to use the best parental stock possible to accentuate good qualities and improve plant vigor.  This list reflects the “best of type” in the species offered.  There are some fantastic things here, so please take your time in making decisions, or just get them all.

Mormodia are hybrids between Mormodes and Clowesia, and they are the stepping stones toward the genus Fredclarkeara.  Mormodias are a great pairing: they produce lots of charming flowers in many different colors, on pendulous inflorescences late in the season, and they are small growing plants. What is not to like about that?

There are several new developments in Fredclarkeara hybrids this year. The focus has been on developing different color forms.  How about green, yellow, spotted and possibly another ‘Black’ flowered grex?  As with other Fredclarkeara hybrids, flower life will exceed over 4 weeks, and the flowers will have excellent shape and color.  There is significant award potential: a plant of Fdk. After Midnight (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. John C. Burchett) was awarded an FCC/AOS last fall. These new Fredclarkearas should not be overlooked.

Good growing, Fred Clarke

Fdk. Julio David Rios (Mo. Leopard Drops 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Donna Wise 'Amber' AM/AOS )

A new direction in Fredclarkeara (Mormodes x Clowesia x Catasetum) breeding.  Here we are looking for rich colors in shades of  burgundy,  red, and dark brown with many having darker spots.  Flower life will be approaching 8 weeks as with other Fredclarkeara hybrids, this is a remarkable trait in this breeding line.  Mo. Leopard Drops (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. lawrenciana) is an excellent bloomer producing 3-5 pendent spikes with 15 or more flowers per bulb, you can imagine what a large mature plant with 100's of flowers would look like.  The Ctsm. Donna Wise (Ctsm. Orchidglade x Ctsm. tenebrosum) is a reliable breeder producing many exceptional offspring as it imparts flower size and its rich color.  Blooming Size

Mo. Lime Tiger ‘SVO’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. expansum ‘Mindori’

This is a new Fredclarkeara hybrid. Here we are looking for dark green flowers with darker green stripes, how cool is that? The Mo. Lime Tiger (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm.  elegans v. alba)  is a green flower with green stripes and I believe this color will be a dominant characteristic.  It produces 3-4 pendent inflorescence per bulb and is quite showy.   The Ctsm. expansum ‘Mindori’ is a dark green almost an olive color, very unusual for the species; it will reinforce the overall flower color and add bloom size to the grex. Flower life will be close to 8 week s as with other breeding of this type.

(Ctsm. pileatum v. imperale 'SVO Blood Red' x Ctsm. rodigasianum 'SVO' )

The Ctsm. pileatum is a beautiful solid red flower, and is the best I have of this type.  It will bloom 3 times a year off a mature pseudobulb and carries 9-14 flowers each blooming.  It really is a great plant.  Ctsm.  rodigasianum can produce 25 -30 flowers per inflorescence an amazingly high flower count, the lip has 3 points and the flower is a golden-yellow- green with brown spots. I expect the flowers to range from solid red to yellow with spots.  Long stems will be produced with 15 or more flowers that have full shaped lips; some will have a 3 pointed lip margin.  I am really looking forward to blooming these.  Blooming Size

For the last few years I have been developing an advanced breeding line of Cycnoches.  I just love the elegant swan-shaped flowers produced on pendulous inflorescences that emerge from the tops of the pseudobulbs.  The composition of this hybrid is ((cooperi x warscewiczii) x cooperi).  The double dose of cooperi will assure high flower count, and the warscewiczii will add size, substance and a shield shaped lip.  These plants will produce 20-25 flowers in shades of green and bronze on long cascading infloresences.

Both of these clones produce inflorescences that carry 22-26 well-arranged flowers that are light green with burgundy spotting and a coarsely frilled lip, a bit like B. digbyana.  Sib crossing will bring out the variability of the cross and make available one of my best hybrids to you Catasetinae lovers.

The hybrid genus is a Mormodia (Mo.) which results from the crossing of Mormodes and Clowesia.   As a breeder when you hit upon a successful combination you build upon it.  So with the next series offerings we are doing just that.  Cl. Rebecca Northen (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea) is a famous and well recognized plant, it is easy to grow, has beautiful frilly pink flowers with a marvelous citrus fragrance, all produced on multiple pendent inflorescences.  The Morm. elegans v. alba has 3-5 upright spikes per bulb, carrying 12-15 flowers each in a beautiful light green with darker green stripes.  Mormodes are dominant for color transfer to their offspring.  This cross will produce green striped flowers with a delicate pink blush; expect multiple pendent inflorescences holding 12-16 flowers, mature plants will be spectacular.

This cross produces 12-16 golden yellow flowers on multiple pendant inflorescences, usually 2-4 per growth.  The plants are small-growing and will stand about 5” tall when fully grown.   Mature plants are quite showy and have a very pleasing quality about them.  They flower on leafless pseudobulbs in January and February. All Mormodias (Clowesia x Mormodes) make excellent specimen plants, as they flower profusely with many pendulous inflorescences when mature. First to bloom, 2

Fdk. After Dark ‘Amazing’ x Cyc. warscewiczii ‘2004 Best’

I wanted to name this hybrid genus Marthaclarkeara so I could introduce it in my talks by saying “I am pleased to present, “Fredclarkeara and Marthaclarkeara.” However somebody beat me to registering it, and this genus is now named Georgecarrara. Oh well…   It is a bit challenging to predict the outcome of this cross, but I expect spotted to solid red flowers with a few greens, shape intermediate between the two parents and 10 to 12 flowers per inflorescence.  This is a very novel hybrid with limited supply.

With the success of the first plants from this cross, I just had to remake it.  Now, hobbyists will have a chance to grow this wonderful grex.  Almost all from the first group had bronze colored flowers with varying degrees of dark spotting; a few were solid dark burgundy.  The large lip from the influence of warscewiczii sets off the flower nicely and adds to its overall appeal.  Pictures of first to bloom 1962, 1968, 1966, 1967

How about huge lips! I love big lips on my Catasetums, and this grex definitely will deliver that.  These will be mostly red flowers; however, a few should bloom in shades of green, light yellow and spotted red. You should expect 12-14 flowers per stem, with plants producing 2-3 stems each season.

Ctsm. Red Dragon (Ctsm. Dragon’s Teeth ‘SVO’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs ‘Burgundy Chips’ FCC/AOS)

Dragon’s Teeth is (Ctsm. fimbriatum x Ctsm. saccatum), and ‘SVO’ produces long inflorescences carrying up to 31 flowers and blooms reliably 3 times a season.  Susan Fuchs is a proven breeder that needs little introduction; magnificent large yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting.  I believe the saccatum in the back ground of this cross will assure long inflorescences and higher flower count.  Look for this pairing to produce 15-20 yellow flowers with red spots to near solid red blooms on long graceful inflorescences with the lips having some fimbriations.

Ctsm. fimbriatum ‘Golden Horizon’ x Ctsm. denticulatum ‘SVO II’ AM/AOS

The dwarf-growing denticulatum is really proving its self as a good breeding plant.  It passes along color, flower shape, and diminutive plant size. The fimbriatum is one of the most robust and “tolerant of varying growing conditions” of any Catasetum. It also has a frilly lip, bright color and relatively long-lived blooms.  Primary hybrids are known for their vigor, and this grex will be no exception. I am expecting yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting, yellow to orange coarsely-fimbriated lips, and plants that flower early in the spring and again in the fall.  Plants will stay on the small side about 6-7” tall.  I was also able to make the reciprocal crosses of this SVO 5631.  Reciprocal crosses in Catasetum breeding are very unusual, as both plants need to have female and male flowers present. This is one of the first times that the influence of pod vs. pollen parent can be evaluated within a particular grex

WOW!!!  check out the first to bloom from the cross. Lately, I have been breeding Catasetums for frilly lips; I just love the texture and contrast they add to the flowers.  Frilly Doris has proven its self over and over as a good parent, with high flower count, excellent arrangement, good color, flowering 3-4 times a year and best of all those frilly lips.  The addition of denticulatum will influence the offspring by reducing plant size, enriching bloom color, creating a nearly a perfect arrangement of flowers and producing coarsely fimbriated lip.  Plants will mature at 6-7” tall and I expect the production of 2-3 inflorescences per season.

The breeding behind Portagee Star is (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. The expectation is for flowers in yellow with a peppering of red spots and relatively flat, fimbriated lips.  Plants will be good growers and reliable bloomers, with the free flowering exhibited by Catasetums.

Ctsm. expansum ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. expansum ‘Linda’ AM/AOS

It is quite unusual to see expansum offered for sale.  In Latin, expansum indicates ‘expanded lip’.  The ‘SVO’ cultivar has one of the nicest lips that I have seen,  flat and very broad, and is a plant that I selected for further breeding.  The cultivar ‘Linda’ produces bright green flowers with a contrasting red callus on a tightly arranged inflorescence of 20 or more blooms. If you collect Catasetum species, this is a 'must have,' and, if you're not a species nut, you still have to have one.

Cyc. warscewiczii ‘Giant Swan’ x Cyc. warscewiczii ‘Wide Petals’

It has been several years since SVO offered a Cyc. warscewiczii.  I have been growing up the last batch and have now selected the best ones for further breeding.  ‘Wide Petals’ is superior to all others, in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit. Check out the picture: I truly don’t believe there is a better warscewiczii out there.  ‘Giant Swan’ is one of my best cultivars, with very large flowers, and it is known to produce 3-4 inflorescences per pseudobulb simultaneously.  I purposely have not exhibited ‘Wide Petals’ or any of the other select cultivars, since I believe that this forthcoming batch will set a new standard in quality for this highly desirable species.

The expansum 'SVO' is a plant I selected for further breeding, as it has superb color and a flat broad lip.   This denticulatum has a beautiful color, its free flowering and small growing.  Primary hybrids are known for their vigor, and this cross should reflect that outcome. This cross is expected to produce flowers with yellow background colors, burgundy spotting and a large red callus. Flowers could be about 2” across, with broad lips, and plants should bloom 3 times a year with 15 or more flowers per stem.  This “mini-Catasetum' is the first time that these two species have been crossed together.  The first person to bloom one will get the grex named after them!

Morm. colossus has a huge flower with outrageous color and is very floriferous.  The Cyc. warscewiczii has a large swan-shaped flower that is deep green with a white lip, one of the best in the collection. The Mormodes will be dominant for color and the Cycnoches will be dominant for flower shape.  So what should you expect?  These will flower with two inflorescences carrying 12-15 flowers each in colors of bronze to ginger snap. I am also expecting larger than-normal flower size. The combination of Cycnoches and Mormodes is a match made in heaven, with the best qualities of both species shining through.  I was also able to make the reciprocal crosses of this SVO 5325 (now sold out).  Reciprocal crosses in Cycnodes breeding are very unusual, as both plants need to have female and male flowers present. ‘Wide Petals’ is superior to all others in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  I don’t believe there is a better warscewiczii out there -- check out the picture. Kevin Clarke (Cyc. herrenhusanum x Cyc. warscewiczii) is truly special.  It is named for my younger son and is the first Cycnoches hybrid from SVO to receive a coveted First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society.  The swan-shaped flowers of Kevin Clarke are bright yellow with light gold spots -- an amazing color -- not to mention the 2 inflorescences carrying 30 perfectly arranged blooms.  Cyc. Kevin Clarke already has improved lip size and form.  The second addition of warscewiczii genes from ‘Wide Petals’ will result in a significant contribution to the overall size, shape, form and lip qualities of this grex.  It is hard to improve on an FCC but this has the potential to do just that, if you only get one Cycnoches hybrid. Ctsm. Dentigrianum (Ctsm. denticulatum ‘SVO II’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. tigrinum ‘SVO’)

This is a manmade combination that also occurs in nature as a natural hybrid called Ctsm. xdasilvae.  Both of the parent species are small-growing, with mature plants not exceeding 6” tall.  Ctsm. tigrinum produces pendulous inflorescences 2-3 times a season, bearing 18-25 well-spaced white flowers with light pink spots and a narrow cream colored lip. Ctsm. denticulatum has a similar flowering frequency and flower count. Ctsm. denticulatum ‘SVOII’ has light rose-colored blooms tightly arranged on the inflorescence and covered with dense dark reddish spots and a contrasting light yellow lip,.  Check out this picture from a friend in Brazil xdasilvae. This cross should combine the best traits from both parents to produce a great mew “mini-Catasetum” hybrid! I also was able to make the reciprocal of this cross (SVO 5632), an unusual occurrence in Catasetums breeding since both plants need to have female and male flowers present. This is a rare opportunity to evaluate the influence of pod vs. pollen parent within a particular grex.

Ctsm. denticulatum ‘Dark Spots’ x Ctsm. Frilly Doris ‘SVO Yellowest’

The dwarf-growing denticulatum is really proving itself as a good breeding plant.  It passes along color, flower shape, and its diminutive plant size. Frilly Doris (Ctsm. Doris Choice x Ctsm. Donna Marie) is one of my favorite breeding plants. It flowers reliably several times a year with 25 or more perfectly arranged flowers and often with 2-3 inflorescences simultaneously. This Frilly Doris has yellow flowers that are boldly spotted and have heavily fimbriated lips. The addition of denticulatum will reduce plant size, enrich bloom color, and allow for a coarsely fimbriate lip.  Plants will mature at 6-7” tall, and I expect the production of 3-4 inflorescences per season.

Ctsm. tigrinum ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. fimbriatum ‘Golden Horizon’

The dwarf-growing tigrinum is proving to be a good breeding plant.  I believe it will pass along its good flower shape and diminutive plant size.   Ctsm. fimbriatum is one of the most robust and “tolerant of variable growing conditions” of the Catasetum species. They also have frilly lips, bright yellow color and relatively long-lived blooms.  Primary hybrids are known for their vigor, and this cross will be no exception. I am expecting wide petals with yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting; the lips will be yellow and coarsely fimbriated. The plants will flower early in the spring and again in the fall. As a bonus the plants will stay on the small side achieving a maximum height of 6-7”.  A very interesting and new type of breeding.

Mo. Jumbo World ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. pileatum ‘Dinner Plate’

This is a new, unnamed Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) hybrid.  We know from previous hybrids that the Mormodia (Mo.) will add its color, floriferous habit and flower longevity to the cross. Mo. Jumbo World (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. buccinator) produces 20 + bright yellow flowers with a peppering of red spots, all well arranged on 3-4 inflorescences from leafless bulbs during dormancy.  ‘Dinner Plate’ has flowers so large that you could be tempted to serve dinner on them!  As with all Fredclarkeara breeding, flower longevity will be extended to 4-5 weeks, and we expect full rounded flower shape with large lips.  I believe the flowers will range from yellow to chartreuse with red spotting.  This cross will set a new standard for color in the Fredclarkeara breeding line.

Mo. Jumbo World ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’

This is a new, unnamed Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) hybrid.  We know that the Mormodia (Mo.) will add color, floriferous habit and flower longevity to the cross.  Mo. Jumbo World (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. buccinator) produces 20+ bright yellow flowers with a peppering of red spots, all well arranged on 3-4 inflorescences from leafless bulbs during dormancy.  Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’ has solid bright yellow flowers with 25-30 blooms per spike.  The lips have a very heavy substance that almost makes them look like they’re formed from yellow wax.  As with all Fredclarkeara breeding, flower longevity will be extended to 4-5 weeks, with full flower shape and flat lips. Flower color will be bright yellow with red spotting.  This cross will set a new standard for yellow flowers in the Fredclarkeara breeding line.

Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘Grapefruit Pink’ x Morm. Nitty-Gritty ‘Red & Gold’

When you cross a Clowesia (Cl.) with a Mormodes (Morm.), a hybrid genus named Mormodia (Mo.) is created.  Mormodia’s have lots of good qualities, including brightly-colored flowers and a tendency to bloom profusely when mature. Cl. Rebecca Northen is (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea), and Morm. Nitty-Gritty is (Morm. Exotic Treat x Morm. rolfeana). They flower late in the year from leafless bulbs which will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences and have flower colors influenced by the Mormodes parent.  These will begin to bloom at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, they will be spectacular, with numerous pendulous infloresences per bulb in colors ranging from yellow to gold and possibly some orange, many spotted with red.  Mormodia’s are the building blocks for Fredclarkeara’s, and this grex should prove very useful for further breeding.

Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘Grapefruit Pink’ x Morm. revolutum ‘SVO Yellow’

When a Clowesia (Cl.) is crossed with a Mormodes (Morm.), a hybrid genus named Mormodia (Mo.) is created.   Cl. Rebecca Northen is (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea), and it produces 15 or more pink flowers with frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Morm. revolutum has a large yellow flower and will dominate for flower color, as Mormodes do.  These will begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, each bulb will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences in colors ranging from yellow to gold and possibly some orange, many spotted with red.  Mormodia’s are the key building blocks for Fredclarkeara’s and this one should prove very useful for further breeding.

Ctsm. saccatum ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. saccatum ‘SVO II’

For the last 5 or 6 years I have been trying to develop this species, but the plants appear to rarely produce female flowers.  The first time they flowered female, no pollen had been saved, but the next time females were produced, I was ready.  Ctsm. saccatum is one of my favorites. It has long pendulous inflorescences that usually are 2’ long however and can reach 3’ under ideal conditions.  Flower count is also surprisingly high; typically there are 20 to 25 flowers to a stem, but the cultivar ‘SVO’ can bloom with as many as 40 flowers!  They also flower 2-3 times a year and large robust plants have been known to bloom 5-6 times a season.  It is a great species, which is easy to grow and rewards you handsomely with lots of flowers.

Ctsm. rectangulare ‘Baker’s Spotted Leopard’ x Ctsm. cirrhaeoides ‘SVO Darkness’

This is a special rectangular, which can flower with more than 55 flowers on a stem.  Last year there this plant produced 3 inflorescences with a total of 167 flowers, all from one bulb! The flowers are cream with burgundy spotting, and the lip is pure white.  Ctsm. cirrhaeoides is a miniature Catasetum and mature plants are just 5” tall.  ‘SVO Darkness’ is the dark color form of cirrhaeoides, with deep burgundy spotted flowers and a near black lip, and its 40-45 flowers are tightly grouped in a fox-tail arrangement.  We are looking for high flower count with this grex. These plants will begin to bloom at a young age, and mature plants should produce 40-50 flowers on each inflorescence.  I am predicting that the dark flower color will be present in some of the progeny, with others being heavily spotted burgundy.  Plant stature will be reduced, and this cross can be considered as a “mini-Catasetum”.   There are high expectations for this new cross. With the potential for 50 flowers per stem, I can hardly wait!

Cl. Grace Dunn ‘Live Oak’ HCC/AOS x Morm. revolutum ‘SVO Yellow’

Grace Dunn is (Cl. warczewitzii x Cl. rosea) and produces 15 or more pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Morm. revolutum ‘SVO Yellow’ has a large, bright yellow flower and will dominate for flower color as Mormodes do.  These will begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, the bulbs will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences in colors ranging from yellow to gold, and a few may have red spots.  All Mormodias (Clowesia x Mormodes) make excellent specimen, plants as they flower profusely with many pendulous inflorescences when mature.  This one is limited in supply.

Ctsm. Jose Abalo ‘SVO’ x Ctsm. fimbriatum v. morrenianum ‘SVO’

Excited is right!!!, check out the pictures of the first to bloom from this cross Here is a cross I am excited about.1, 2   Ctsm. Jose Abalo (Ctsm. sanguineum x Ctsm.Orchidglade) is an outstanding plant with a striking flower. Inflorescences are 24” long and held straight up, carrying 15-18 flowers in dark burgundy (almost black) with lips that are thick and hard. You really need to see this in person to fully appreciate the quality. Ctsm. fimbriatum v. morrenianum is the unusual dark burgundy color form of this species.  This fimbriatum is free flowering and has produced a number of very nice offspring.  I am expecting some amazing flower colors in deep burgundy to near black, with lips that are frilled and of heavy substance.  This is a very novel hybrid with exceptional potential!

Ctsm. Frilly Doris ‘SVO ‘ HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Frilly Doris ‘SVO II‘ AM/AOS

This cross is between my two best Ctsm. Frilly Doris (Ctsm. Doris Choice x Ctsm. Donna Marie). Yes it’s listed here twice….  It really is one of my favorite Catasetums.

Exotic Treat x Morm. rolfeana) has large gold-colored flowers with red spotting .  This grex will flower late in the year from leafless bulbs that produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences and have flowers in colors ranging from yellow to gold, many spotted red as influenced by the Mormodes parent.  These will also begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, they will be spectacular! All Mormodia’s (Clowesia x Mormodes) make excellent specimen plants, as they flower profusely with many pendulous inflorescences when mature.

Ctsm. expansum 'SVO' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO'

This is the next generation of breeding with one of the new “mini-Catasetums” Karen Armstrong (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs x Ctsm. denticulatum).   Ctsm. expansum has one of the nicer lips in the Catasetum alliance, and the 'SVO' cultivar was selected out of many, for its excellent color, large flat lip, and free flowering habit. Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO' has a yellow flower with bold burgundy spots, flowers 2-3 times a season, and is only 5” tall! The expectation is to increase flower size while maintaining a small plant size.  I believe plants will mature at 6-7” tall and the flowers will be in the 3” range.  Bloom colors will be yellow to yellow-green with bold burgundy blotches and spots and a darker raised callus.

Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘White Wonder’ x Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunshine’

When a Clowesia (Cl.) is crossed with a Catasetum (Ctsm.), the hybrid genus Clowesetum (Clo.) is created.   The flowers become ‘perfect’ and bloom longevity is extended to 3 weeks or more.  Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘White Wonder’produces 15 or more pure white flowers with frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’ produces 25-30 solid bright yellow blooms per spike.  The lips have a very heavy substance that makes them almost look like they are made of yellow wax.  I really like Clowesetum’s: the flowers look like Catasetums, but instead of flowering throughout the year, they bloom like Clowesia, 3-4 inflorescences all at once.  These plants will carry bright yellow flowers on pendulous inflorescences late in the season.

Ctsm. Karen Armstrong (Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS)

When this cross was first introduced it caused a sensation with hobbyist around the country, it was the first of the new “mini-Catasetums”.  Mature plants are only 5” tall, with relatively large blooms and flowers in rich colors ranging from yellow with bold burgundy spots, and yellow with fine spotting to solid burgundy.  Everyone has space for at least one plant from this type of breeding.  Expect 15-20 flowers per inflorescence 2-3 times per season.   A similar cross with Ctsm. Susan Fuchs and the capsule parent is SVO 5626   Pictures from the first batch 1,2,3

Clo. Jem's Speckled Russ 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Golden Fire'

JEM's Speckled Russ (Cl. russelliana x Ctsm. denticulatum) was awarded with 3 inflorescences carrying 126 flowers, an average of 42 flowers on each stem! The blooms are cream colored and heavily covered with a fine peppering of red spots.  The plant is small growing and could be considered a “mini-Clowesetum” (Clowesia x Catasetum).  Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO' is only 5” tall and flowers 2-3 times a season carrying golden yellow flowers with fine red spotting. This new grex is a second-generation Clowesetum and all the offspring will have perfect flowers that last 3+ weeks. The expectation here is to maintain the small plant size, produce 20 or more rose to yellow flowers with a heavy peppering of red spots. These should also flower several times a year and produce 2-3 inflorescences at each flowering.  This is the first complex “mini-Clowesetum” ever hybridized and well worth growing.

Ctsm. Orchidglade ‘Davie Ranches’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. lucis ‘Dana’s Bird of Paradise’ AM/AOS

Ctsm. lucis has a remarkable inflorescence: 3’ long and straight up, carrying 15-25 relatively long-lived green flowers with white lips.  The plant is also large, with bulbs that are typically 12” and up to 16” tall. Ctsm. Orchidglade (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. expansum) carries 12-16 light yellow flowers spotted in red, approaching 4” in size.  The plant is free flowering, blooming 2-3 times a year.  This is the second hybrid made with Ctsm. lucis, and the first had good flower quality, but the upright stem was not a dominant trait.  I am hopeful that this new cross will have more progeny develop the upright inflorescence habit.  I am still imagining 20+, three inch yellow flowers covered with red spots on straight, upright 2’ long spikes...
