Plant Offerings

Sunset Valley Orchids 2015 Catasetinae Plant Offering

This offering is really amazing.  It is by far the most comprehensive list of high-quality species and hybrids available for sale in the Catasetinae alliance.  It has taken many years to collect, select, and develop these breeding lines.  The focus this year has been in 5 areas:  Cycnoches, Mini-Catasetums, Species, Mormodias, and of course new styles of Fredclarkearas.  The excellence of the breeding stock is without compare, and these plants will set the new standard for flower quality, vigor, awards, and your enjoyment.

Summer 2016 Catasetinae Listing

JH 12  NEW
(Ctsm. Donna Wise 'Samantha' AM/AOS x Ctsm. saccatum 'Samantha' HCC/AOS)
This is a hybrid made by Jordan Hawley an accomplished orchid grower and Catasetinae fanatic.  These will produce long spikes of 20-25 flowers in rich burgundy colors, flat and frilled lips in contrasting colors.

JH13 NEW
(Ctsm. expansum 'Myra' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. osculatum 'Clara')
This is also a Jordan Hawley cross.  The expansum has an excellent color of golden  yellow and it’s boldly spotted deep  burgundy.  The osculatum is a yellow flower with a red rimmed saccate lip.  The red rimed lip looks like red lips, from the latin ‘osculate’ indicates kissing.

Ctsm. Melana Davison (Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Penang 'Sweet Heart')

This is your second chance to get a really very special cross.  This grex has produced a variety of eye-catching flower colors, from solid deep burgundy to white blotched burgundy and white with fine red spotting.  This is a new mini-Catasetum, with mature plants only 5” tall thanks to the influence of Ctsm. denticulatum.  Expect 15-20 flowers, 2-3 times per season.  Pictures from the first batch Pic 1 , 2 , 3.  It's always interesting to see the effect of reciprocal breeding on the flower quality, and SVO 5995 is the reciprocal.
Thereciprocal SVO 5995 is available for this sold out Melana Davison and the plants look excellent.

Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO' x Cyc. Swan Cascade 'Best Select'

This cross represents some of the most modern breeding in Cycnoches today.  As the advanced breeding is taking us farther away from the influence of the species, we are finding that the plants are easier to grow.   Richard Brandon (Cyc. warscewiczii x Cyc. Jean E. Monnier) was a real breakthrough: superbly-shaped flowers with shield-shaped lips, high flower count, heavy substance and amazing colors.  Swan Cascade (Cyc. Jean E. Monnier x Cyc. cooperi) has also produced excellent offspring, with 'Best Select' having particularly long inflorescences carrying 25-27 flowers.  The expectation here is for bronze flowers with darker burgundy spots, shield-shaped lips, and long inflorescences carrying 20 or more flowers.  You can't go wrong with this one.

Fdk. After Dark 'Amazing' x Cyc. warscewiczii '2004 Best'

I wanted to name this hybrid genus Marthaclarkeara so I could introduce it in my talks by saying “I am pleased to present Fredclarkeara and Marthaclarkeara.” However somebody beat me to registration, and this genus is now named Georgecarrara. Oh well…  It is a bit challenging to predict the outcome of this cross, but I expect spotted to solid red flowers with a few greens, shape intermediate between the two parents and 10 to 12 flowers per inflorescence.  This is a very novel hybrid with limited supply.

Cyc. Richard Brandon (Cyc. Jean E. Monnier 'Big & Bold' x Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS)

With the amazing results from the first batch from this cross, I just had to remake it.  Now, you will have a chance to grow this wonderful grex.  The flowers are of excellent quality, large, bronze-colored with varying degrees of dark spotting, and a few will be solid dark burgundy.  The large lip from the influence of warscewiczii sets off the flower nicely and adds to its overall appeal.  Pictures of first to bloom Pic 1, 2, 3

Cyc. warscewiczii 'Giant Swan' x Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II'

Large shield-shaped lips in Cycnoches really make for beautiful flowers. The hybrid of Richard Brandon (Cyc. warscewiczii x Cyc. Jean E. Monnier) has the large lip influenced by warscewiczii.  Crossing it back to warscewiczii will further assure large shield-shaped lips and improve flower size and substance.  Expect flowers in bronze to green colors with some darker spotting.  Based on my experience, this very well may be the best Cycnoches cross to date.  I am really looking forward to seeing them flower.  Very Limited

SVO 5610 NEW
Cyc. warscewiczii 'Giant Swan' x Cyc. warscewiczii 'Wide Petals'

It has been several years since SVO offered a Cyc. warscewiczii.  I have been growing up the last batch and selected the best ones for further breeding.  ‘Wide Petals’ is superior to all others in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit. Check out the picture: I truly don’t believe there is a better warscewiczii out there.  ‘Giant Swan’ is one of my best cultivars, with very large flowers, and is known to produce 3-4 inflorescences per pseudobulb at one time.  I purposely have not exhibited ‘Wide Petals’ or any of the other select cultivars, since I believe that this forthcoming batch will set a new standard in quality for this highly desirable species.

Mo. Leopard Drops 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. expansum 'Linda' AM/AOS

A new Fredclarkeara hybrid!  Based on the success of similar crosses, these will have long-lasting flowers, full shape, heavy substance, fragrance and all the other great qualities this kind of breeding exhibits.  Flowers will be in colors from ranging from green to orange to red and spotted dark burgundy.  Expect 2-3 pendulous inflorescences with 20 or more flowers each.

Ctsm. Karen Armstrong (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS x Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

When this cross was first introduced, it caused a sensation with hobbyists around the country as the first of the new successful mini-Catasetums.  Mature plants are only 5” tall, with relatively large blooms and flowers in rich colors ranging from yellow with bold burgundy spots and yellow with fine spotting to solid burgundy.  It has taken several years to make the cross again, and this is your chance to get a really special hybrid.  A compact grower - everyone has space for at least one of these.  Expect 15-20 flowers per inflorescence 2-3 times per season.  Pictures from the first batch Pic 1 , 2 , 3

SVO 5628
Cyc. Pineapple Popcorn
Cyc. warscewiczii 'Wide Petals' x Cyc. Kevin Clarke 'SVO' FCC/AOS

‘Wide Petals’ is superior to all others in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  I don’t believe there is a better warscewiczii out there -- check out the picture. Kevin Clarke (Cyc. herrenhusanum x Cyc. warscewiczii) is truly special.  It is named for my younger son and is the first Cycnoches hybrid from SVO to receive a coveted First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society.  The swan-shaped flowers of Kevin Clarke are bright yellow with faint gold spots -- an amazing color -- not to mention the 2 inflorescences carrying 30 perfectly arranged blooms.  Cyc. Kevin Clarke already has improved lip size and form.  The second addition of warscewiczii genes from ‘Wide Petals’ will result in a significant contribution to the overall size, shape, form and lip qualities of this grex.  It is hard to improve on an FCC, but this cross has the potential to do just that.  If you only get one Cycnoches hybrid, this is the one! Don't despair!  SVO 6160 is available further down the page :-)

Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Ctsm. denticulatum 'Dark Spots'

The long awaited re-appearance of denticulatum is here!  It's taken longer than I thought to have these again.  As you know it takes male and female flowers to make a capsule, and I finally got female flowers.  ‘Dark Spots’ is a selection of (‘SVO’ AM/AOS x ‘SVO II’ AM/AOS) and, as the name indicates, it has very dark spotting.  ‘SVO II’ is an excellent grower and flowers 3-4 times a year as a mature plant.  Ctsm. denticulatum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 oF and humidity at 70 % or higher.   Better get these now - who knows when one will flower female again!  See also SVO 5975 and SVO 6005.

Fdk. Upgrade

Morm. Jumbo World 'SVO' x Ctsm. spitzii 'Yellow Sunlight'

This is a new, unnamed Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) hybrid.  We know that the Mormodia (Mo.) will add color, floriferous habit and flower longevity to the cross.  Mo. Jumbo World (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. buccinator) produces 20+ bright yellow flowers with a peppering of red spots, all well arranged on 3-4 inflorescences.  Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’ has solid bright yellow flowers with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 blooms apiece.  The lip of spitzii is thick and solid - almost like it's formed from yellow wax.  The hard, flat lip should be valuable in flattening out the lips in this new hybrid, which also should have extended flower longevity of 4-5 weeks.  Flower color will be bright yellow with red spotting.  This cross will set a new standard for yellow flowers in Fredclarkeara hybrids.

Ctsm. pileatum 'Dinner Plate' x Ctsm. pileatum ‘Jumbo Green Gold' HCC/AOS

It's been quite a while since I last offered pileatum.  It really is the ‘king and queen’ of the Catasetums. Expect these to bloom with large 5” flowers, impressive broad green lips, and 10-13 flowers per inflorescence, 2 or 3 times a year.  All I can say is "Wow!"  >>> Same as SVO 6192 <<<

SVO 5679
Morm. ignea 'Neon Orange' x Morm. lawrenceana 'SVO'

Mormodes is a very interesting genus within Catasetinae.  They've gotten a reputation as hard to grow…and some are.  I have been growing them for years, and I now have selected the best growers and bloomers. Interestingly, hybrids between two species or “primary hybrids” like this one exhibit a phenomenon called ‘hybrid vigor,’ in which the offspring are more vigorous and easier to grow and flower compared to the parent species.  These will bloom with 2-4 inflorescences per bulb and fragrant, colorful flowers in orange-gold with darker burgundy spotting.  If you have good success growing Catasetums, these should do equally well.  Also see the other Mormodes offered, SVO 6165.

Cl. Grace Dunn 'Live Oak' HCC/AOS x Morm. revolutum 'SVO Yellow'

Grace Dunn is (Cl. warczewitzii x Cl. rosea) and produces 15 or more pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Morm. revolutum ‘SVO Yellow’ has a large, bright yellow flower and will dominate for flower color as Mormodes do.  These will begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, the bulbs will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences in colors ranging from yellow to gold, and a few may have red spots.  All Mormodias (Clowesia x Mormodes) make excellent specimen plants, as they flower profusely when mature.

Cl. Grace Dunn 'Live Oak' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS

Clowesetum (Clo.) hybrids are made by crossing a Clowesia and Catasetum.  These intergeneric hybrids have several important traits, including improved flower life, multiple spiking habit, good form, and fragrance.  Both parents are small-growing Catasetinae, staying under 4” tall.  These will produce full-shaped blooms in light pink, with all segments heavily peppered darker pink.  This hybrid really has nice coloring and will be very cute.  These will also flower 2x a year, once in the summer and again late in the season on leafless bulbs.  Mature plants will be show stoppers!  I think there is great potential with this cross - give these a try.  They will be similar to Clo. Alexandra Savva (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. denticulatum).

Cl. Grace Dunn 'Live Oak' HCC/AOS x Morm. Nitty-Gritty 'Red & Gold'

Grace Dunn is (Cl. warczewitzii x Cl. rosea) and bears 15 or more pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Morm. Nitty-Gritty (Morm. Exotic Treat x Morm. rolfeana) has large gold-colored flowers with red spotting.  This grex will flower late in the year and have flowers in colors ranging from yellow to gold, many spotted red as influenced by the Mormodes parent.  These will also begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, they will be spectacular! All Mormodia’s (Clowesia x Mormodes) make excellent specimen plants, as they flower profusely with many pendulous inflorescences when mature.

Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. expansum 'Linda' AM/AOS

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is one parent of the world famous Fdk. After Dark.  The influence in breeding with Mormodia (Mo.) is well known: it adds flower color, multiple pendulous inflorescences and flower longevity to its offspring.  Ctsm. expansum is named for its large ‘expanded’ lip and should contribute this feature to the cross.  Expect 20+ well-rounded flowers per stem.  Color will be interesting, as it is a combination of red and green.  Very limited. These could be impressive!

Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. warscewiczii 'Jumbo' mutation

Cyc. warscewiczii ‘SVO’ is one of the top performers in my breeding stock.  Tt has great flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  ‘Jumbo Mutation’ was selected from a flowering group of clones and has an exceptional flower that really stands out - clearly a meristem shift (mutation) for the better. These will have exceptional flower quality and vigor for this highly desirable species.

Fdk. L'amour de vie de Sue (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Louise Clarke 'Wonder Woman')

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is one parent of the world famous Fdk. After Dark.  The influence of Mormodia (Mo.) is well known: it adds flower color, multiple pendulous inflorescences and flower longevity to its offspring.  Ctsm. Louise Clarke is named for my mother and is a spectacular hybrid.  The cultivar ‘Wonder Woman’ has superb flower quality, high flower count, huge lips and flowers 5 times a year.  Yes - 5 times a year!  The parents of Fdk. After Dark are (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. Donna Wise), and Ctsm. Louise Clarke is (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs x Ctsm. Donna Wise).  This makes Louise Clarke similar to Donna Wise, in that three species are represented: pileatum, expansum and tenebrosum.  The addition of Ctsm. Susan Fuchs should provide additional doses of pileatum and expansum, which will improve flower size and lip width.  What about color?  I believe that the deep red from Mo. Painted Desert combined with the dark brown of Ctsm. tenebrosum in the breeding of Donna Wise created the black flowers of Fdk. After Dark.  In this grex, we still have the same species, thus the potential exists to produce black-colored flowers. First plants to flower Pic 1, 2, 3

Ctsm. Extravaganza

Ctsm. Louise Clarke 'SVO' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO'

This is the first of the new mini-Catasetums crossed back onto standard-type plants.  We know the color will be intensified, but how will flower and plant size be influenced?  I expect a significant increase in flower size with only a modest increase in plant size.  Flowers will have a yellow base color with burgundy spotting; many will be solid dark burgundy... This is a cutting-edge hybrid at the forefront of mini-Catasetum breeding. This is the first plant to flower, super flat lip and excellent color, these are going to be good!

Ctsm. fimbriatum v. morrenianum 'SVO' x Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS

The dwarf-growing denticulatum is really proving itself as a good breeding plant.  It passes along color, flower shape, and diminutive plant size.  This fimbriatum has relatively long-lived dark purple flowers, each with a frilly lip.  The morrenianum variety is a rare color form that, interestingly, is often dominant in the offspring.  Primary hybrids are known for their vigor, and this grex will be no exception.  I am expecting dark purple flowers with darker spotting, coarsely-fimbriated lips, and plants that flower early in the spring and again in the fall.  Plants will stay on the small side, about 6-7” tall.  A very different style of mini-Catasetum breeding.

Fdk. After Dark 'Mystery' x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS

This is the next level in the improvement of Fredclarkeara’s.  Here we are looking for increased flower size, flat lips and a wide range of colors, while still maintaining flower longevity and floriferousness.  Many of these will be of award quality.

Ctsm. Donna Wise 'Amber' AM/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum 'SVO Blood Red'

The Ctsm. Donna Wise (Ctsm. Orchidglade x Ctsm. tenebrosum) is a reliable breeder, producing many exceptional offspring as it imparts flower size, rich color and a free flowering habit.  The addition of the genes from Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale ‘SVO Blood Red,’ with its 9-14 solid red flowers, huge lip and free blooming habit, should produce excellent offspring.  These flowers will be solid red-burgundy, have flat lips in colors from yellow to red and be produced several times per season.  An excellent Catasetum cross.

Ctsm. expansum 'Myra' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. expansum 'Linda' AM/AOS

It is quite unusual to see expansum offered for sale.  I'm not sure why this is true, but perhaps expansum is simply overshadowed by its better-known cousin, Ctsm. pileatum.  Ctsm. expansum is magnificent in its own right, with large, boldly-spotted flowers and big, broad, flat lips.  Very impressive!  The two cultivars used to create this cross may very well result in the best pairing of expansum ever made.  If you collect Catasetum species, this is a 'must have,' and, if you're not a species nut, you still should have one.  This is the first to flower from the reciprocal cross last year Pic 1

Ctsm.  tenebrosum 'Ed #2' AM/AOS x Ctsm. tenebrosum 'Ed Wise'

This a cross between my two best Ctsm. tenebrosum, which are the best I've seen.  An early bloomer, this species is the first of the genus to flower each year.  Both parents bloom reliably, with great form and color.  Ctsm. tenebrosum ‘Ed #2’ is the parent of Ctsm. Donna Wise, which is the parent of Fdk. After Dark.  I've often thought that ‘Ed #2’ might have been the parent that made all the difference in Fdk. After Dark.  This is superior breeding of a very desirable species.

Here is an exact remake of this highly successful grex.  The Donnas have received an amazing nine American Orchid Society awards, but this is the first time this cross has been remade.  I am expecting deep burgundy flowers with lighter colored lips.  Great vigor is typical of this grex, and mature plants will flower 3-5 times a year.  Pictures from original cross Pic 1, 2, 3, 4

I love frilly lips! Yes, it sounds strange to say that out loud, but it's true.  Frilly Doris is used frequently in our breeding, as it imparts high flower count, good shape, free flowering and most of all its frilly lip.  Orchidglade’s flower is really large, and 13-15 are carried on each stem. This grex will produce richly-colored flowers with fimbriated lips.  Very showy!

Orchidglade x Ctsm. tenebrosum) with denticulatum, which  has proven itself to be a good breeder that passes along color, flower shape, diminutive plant size and free flowering qualities. This is a new mini-Catasetum that will have dark flowers and contrasting lighter lips.  I expect them to be very floriferous, blooming 2-4 times a season.

The long awaited re-appearance of denticulatum has arrived!   It had taken longer than I thought to have these again.  As you know it takes male and female flowers, finally I got female flowers.  ‘SVO’ was the first AM/AOS given by the judges.  It is an excellent grower and flowers 3-4 times a year as a mature plant.  ‘Dark Spots’ is a selection of (‘SVO’ AM/AOS x ‘SVO II’ AM/AOS) and, as the name indicates, it has very dark spotting.  Ctsm. denticulatum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 oF and humidity at 70 % or higher.   Better get these now - who knows when one will flower female again!  See also SVO 5633 and SVO 5975.

This grex is a Fredclarkeara, as it has Catasetum, Mormodes and Clowesia in its background.  This, however, is a different path that involves Catamodes x Clowesetum, whereas the original was Mormodia x Catasetum.  I am very interested, fascinated, actually, to see if the flower longevity of this new cross will compare to the original.  Dragons Tail (Ctsm. denticulatum x Morm. ignea) had amazing-looking flowers, almost scale-like, with deep colors and flat lips,  Very different!  Jumbo Lace (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. fimbriatum) has yellow flowers peppered with dark burgundy spots and a frilly lip, and blooms twice a year, which is an important quality when breeding with Clowesetum hybrids.  It's a bit difficult to predict how these plants will bloom.  Here is my best shot: 12 to 15 yellow flowers, densely spotted with burgundy, and flattened fimbriate lips.  I can hardly wait to see this flower.  LOOK WHAT I FORGOT TO POST!!!  This is a very exciting new hybrid.

Donna Wise.  This makes Louise Clarke similar to Donna Wise, in that there are three species represented: pileatum, expansum and tenebrosum.  However, the addition of Ctsm. Susan Fuchs should provide additional doses of pileatum and expansum, which should provide improved flower size and lip width.  What about color?  I believe that the deep red from Mo. Painted Desert combined with the dark brown of Ctsm. tenebrosum in the breeding of Donna Wise created the black flower colors of Fdk. After Dark.  In this grex, we have the same species, thus the potential exists to produce black-colored flowers. First plants to flower Pic 1, 2, 3

With the success of the first plants from this cross, I just had to remake it.  Now, hobbyists will have a chance to grow this wonderful grex.  Almost all from the first group had bronze colored flowers with varying degrees of dark spotting; a few were solid dark burgundy.  The large lip from the influence of warscewiczii sets off the flower nicely and adds to its overall appeal.  Pictures of first to bloom Pic 1 , Pic 2, Pic 3, Pic 4 Blooming Size

Ctsm. pileatum v. imperale 'SVO Blood Red' x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS

How about huge lips! I love big lips on my Catasetums, and this grex definitely will deliver that.  These will be mostly red flowers; however, a few should bloom in shades of green, light yellow and spotted red. You should expect 12-14 flowers per stem, with plants producing 2-3 stems each season. Blooming Size

Blooming Size

Cyc. warscewiczii 'Wide Petals' Cyc.

The swan-shaped flowers of Kevin Clarke are bright yellow with light gold spots -- an amazing color -- not to mention the 2 inflorescences carrying 30 perfectly arranged blooms.  Cyc. Kevin Clarke already has improved lip size and form.  The second addition of warscewiczii genes from ‘Wide Petals’ will result in a significant contribution to the overall size, shape, form and lip qualities of this grex.  It is hard to improve on an FCC but this has the potential to do just that, if you only get one Cycnoches hybrid. This is the one.  Here is a picture of the first to bloom   Blooming Size

Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS Ctsm. fimbriatum 'Golden Horizon'

The dwarf-growing denticulatum is really proving itself as a good breeding plant.  It passes along color, flower shape, and diminutive plant size.   Ctsm. fimbriatum is one of the most robust and “tolerant of variable growing conditions” of the Catasetums.  It also has relatively long lived flowers with frilly lips, and bright colors.  Primary hybrids are known for their vigor, and this grex will be no exception.  I am expecting yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting, yellow to orange coarsely-fimbriated lips, and small growing plants that flower early in the spring and again in the fall.   Blooming Size

Mo. Jumbo World 'SVO'Ctsm. spitzii 'Yellow Sunlight'

This is a new, unnamed Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) hybrid.  We know that the Mormodia (Mo.) will add color, floriferous habit and flower longevity to the cross.  Mo. Jumbo World (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. buccinator) produces 20+ bright yellow flowers with a peppering of red spots, all well arranged on 3-4 inflorescences from leafless bulbs during dormancy.  Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’ has solid bright yellow flowers with 25-30 blooms per spike.  The lips have a very heavy substance that almost makes them look like they’re formed from yellow wax.  As with all Fredclarkeara breeding, flower longevity will be extended to 4-5 weeks, with full flower shape and flat lips. Flower color will be bright yellow with red spotting.  This cross will set a new standard for yellow flowers in the Fredclarkeara breeding line. Blooming Size

Cl. Rebecca Northen 'Grapefruit Pink'Morm. Nitty-Gritty 'Red & Gold'

When you cross a Clowesia (Cl.) with a Mormodes (Morm.), a hybrid genus named Mormodia (Mo.) is created.  Mormodia’s have lots of good qualities, including brightly-colored flowers and a tendency to bloom profusely when mature. Cl. Rebecca Northen is (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea), and Morm. Nitty-Gritty is (Morm. Exotic Treat x Morm. rolfeana). They flower late in the year from leafless bulbs which will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences and have flower colors influenced by the Mormodes parent.  These will begin to bloom at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, they will be spectacular, with numerous pendulous infloresences per bulb in colors ranging from yellow to gold and possibly some orange, many spotted with red.  Mormodia’s are the building blocks for Fredclarkeara’s, and this grex should prove very useful for further breeding.  Blooming Size

Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea), and it produces 15 or more pink flowers with frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Morm. revolutum has a large yellow flower and will dominate for flower color, as Mormodes do.  These will begin to flower at a young age, generally in 3” pots. When mature, each bulb will produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences in colors ranging from yellow to gold and possibly some orange, many spotted with red.  Mormodia’s are the key building blocks for Fredclarkeara’s and this one should prove very useful for further breeding.  Blooming Size

Ctsm. saccatum 'SVO' Ctsm. saccatum 'SVO II'

For the last 5 or 6 years I have been trying to develop this species, but the plants appear to rarely produce female flowers.  The first time they flowered female, no pollen had been saved, but the next time females were produced, I was ready.  Ctsm. saccatum is one of my favorites. It has long pendulous inflorescences that usually are 2’ long however and can reach 3’ under ideal conditions.  Flower count is also surprisingly high; typically there are 20 to 25 flowers to a stem, but the cultivar ‘SVO’ can bloom with as many as 40 flowers!  They also flower 2-3 times a year and large robust plants have been known to bloom 5-6 times a season.  It is a great species, which is easy to grow and rewards you handsomely with lots of flowers.  Blooming Size.  Here is a picture of the first to bloom

Ctsm. Jose Abalo 'SVO'Ctsm. fimbriatum v. morrenianum 'SVO'

Excited is right!!! Check out the pictures of the first to bloom from this cross Pic 1, Pic 2   Ctsm. Jose Abalo (Ctsm. sanguineum x Ctsm.Orchidglade) is an outstanding plant with a striking flower. Inflorescences are 24” long and held straight up, carrying 15-18 flowers in dark burgundy (almost black) with lips that are thick and hard. You really need to see this in person to fully appreciate the quality. Ctsm. fimbriatum v. morrenianum is the unusual dark burgundy color form of this species.  This fimbriatum is free flowering and has produced a number of very nice offspring.  I am expecting some amazing flower colors in deep burgundy to near black, with lips that are frilled and of heavy substance.  This is a very novel hybrid with exceptional potential!  Blooming Size. This cross is now named Ctsm. Hat Trick.  Here is a picture on one I selected last year as a first blooming plant, Picture

Ctsm. expansum 'SVO' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO'

This is the next generation of breeding with one of the new “mini-Catasetums” Karen Armstrong (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs x Ctsm. denticulatum).   Ctsm. expansum has one of the nicer lips in the Catasetum alliance, and the ‘SVO’ cultivar was selected out of many, for its excellent color, large flat lip, and free flowering habit. Ctsm. Karen Armstrong ‘SVO’ has a yellow flower with bold burgundy spots, flowers 2-3 times a season, and is only 5” tall! The expectation is to increase flower size while maintaining a small plant size.  I believe plants will mature at 6-7” tall and the flowers will be in the 3” range.  Bloom colors will be yellow to yellow-green with bold burgundy blotches and spots and a darker raised callus.  Blooming Size

Cl. Rebecca Northen 'White Wonder'  x Ctsm. spitzii 'Yellow Sunshine'

When a Clowesia (Cl.) is crossed with a Catasetum (Ctsm.), the hybrid genus Clowesetum (Clo.) is created.   The flowers become ‘perfect’ and bloom longevity is extended to 3 weeks or more.  Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘White Wonder’produces 15 or more pure white flowers with frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Ctsm. spitzii ‘Yellow Sunlight’ produces 25-30 solid bright yellow blooms per spike.  The lips have a very heavy substance that makes them almost look like they are made of yellow wax.  I really like Clowesetum’s: the flowers look like Catasetums, but instead of flowering throughout the year, they bloom like Clowesia, 3-4 inflorescences all at once.  These plants will carry bright yellow flowers on pendulous inflorescences late in the season.   Blooming Size.

Ctsm. lucis has a remarkable inflorescence: 3’ long and straight up, carrying 15-25 relatively long-lived green flowers with white lips.  The plant is also large, with bulbs that are typically 12” and up to 16” tall. Ctsm. Orchidglade (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. expansum) carries 12-16 light yellow flowers spotted in red, approaching 4” in size.  The plant is free flowering, blooming 2-3 times a year.  This is the second hybrid made with Ctsm. lucis, and the first had good flower quality, but the upright stem was not a dominant trait.  I am hopeful that this new cross will have more progeny develop the upright inflorescence habit.  I am still imagining 20+, three inch yellow flowers covered with red spots on straight, upright 2’ long spikes...    Blooming Size.

This is the first plant to flower, super flat lip and excellent color; these are going to be good!

This cross makes the hybrid genus Cyclodes, which is rarely seen.  Only 4 Cyclodes have been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society to date.  Lime Tiger (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. elegans) has a light green flower with darker green stripes.  By crossing it to the large green flower of ‘SVO Swan,’ we will see green flowers, some with green stripes.  Flowers will be larger than SVO 6145 but not as floriferous.  This is a very different style of breeding and has good potential to produce flowers never seen before.
