Plant Offerings

Sunset Valley Orchids 2016 Catasetinae Plant Offering

For 2016, I am pleased to share the most comprehensive selection of Catasetinae hybrids and species ever offered.  Through the ongoing process of collecting, selecting, and developing our parental lines, the quality of the breeding stock is now without compare.  These new hybrids will set the standard for flower quality, vigor, and your enjoyment.

This year's main focus has been on Fredclarkeara breeding.  This wonderful hybrid genus produces fantastic results, with beautiful color, superior shape, high flower count, perfectly arranged blooms, and highly fragrant long-lasting flowers.  Quality in this genus is just amazing; to date, the hybrid genus Fredclarkeara has received the highest award from the American Orchid Society, 17 FCC/AOS awards!  What makes this more amazing is that there are only 22 registered Fredclarkeara hybrids!  Including all AOS awards to date, each Fredclarkeara grex has received an average of nearly three awards.  Remarkable statistics aside, these really are great plants: robust growers, reliable bloomers, and  long lived flowers.  This is the year to acquire the best Fredclarkeara genetics ever offered; don't miss out!

Over the last few years we have been working on the development of advanced breeding lines for Cycnoches.  I just love the elegant swan-shaped blooms; they truly are the most breathtaking flowers in the genus.  We have been selecting Cycnoches for our breeding program using several criteria: plant vigor, flower quality, flower color, and resistance to occasional back bulb die off.  Our Cycnoches species and hybrids have been through this selection process for two to three generations, resulting in significant improvements in flower quality and ease of culture.

By popular demand, we are making a few more standard sized Catasetum crosses.  The large flowers are really amazing!  These new crosses have superior genetics and are producing some really superb flowers.

We also are continuing the successful “mini-Catasetum” crosses, including the introduction of several very promising new ones.  This is a new plant form that has gained considerable attention from collectors.  These new hybrids are compact growers and flower 2-4 times a year!  How can you go wrong?

In this list you will also see advanced hybrids using Mormodes.  We have been working with these for years now, developing new colors and vigorous plants.  Mormodes are some of my favorite late-blooming Catasetinae.  They have bizarre, bold colors, twisted flowers, and a spicy fragrance that signal the end of the Catasetinae blooming season.

I've also received many requests for Catasetinae species.  When breeding species, it's important to use the best parental stock possible to accentuate good qualities, especially plant vigor.  This list reflects the “best of type” in the species offered.  There are some fantastic things here, so please take your time in making decisions - or just get them all.

There will be two releases of the new Catasetinae list, this being the first, with the second to follow in approximately 5-6 weeks.

Good growing,

Fred Clarke

SVO 561
Cyc. warscewiczii ('Giant Swan' x 'Wide Petals')

This species is the most spectacular in the genus. 'Wide Petals' is superior to all others in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  Check out the picture: I truly don't believe there is a better warscewiczii out there.  'Giant Swan' is one of my best cultivars, with very large flowers, and is known to produce 3-4 inflorescences per pseudobulb at one time.  I believe that this forthcoming batch will set a new standard in quality for this highly desirable species.

Fdk. Upgrade (Mo. Jumbo World 'Olympic Gold' x Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' FCC/AOS)

This is a new Fredclarkeara (Fdk.) hybrid.  We know that the Mormodia (Mo.) will add color, floriferous habit and flower longevity to the cross.  Mo. Jumbo World (Cl. Grace Dunn x Morm. buccinator) produces 20+ bright yellow flowers with a peppering of red spots, all well arranged on 3-4 inflorescences.  Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' has solid bright yellow flowers with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 blooms apiece.  This remarkable plant received an FCC/AOS in December 2015.  The lip of spitzii is thick and solid, almost like it's formed from yellow wax!  The hard, flat lip should be valuable in flattening out the lips in this new hybrid, which should have extended flower longevity of 4-5 weeks.  Flower color will be bright yellow with red spotting.  This cross will set a new standard for yellow flowers in Fredclarkeara hybrids. Ctsm. denticulatum ('SVO II' AM/AOS x 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The long awaited re-appearance of denticulatum is here!  This is a pairing between the two best cultivars of this delightful compact-growing species.  It's taken longer than I thought to have these again.  As you know, it takes male and female flowers to make a capsule, and I finally got female flowers.  Both parents are excellent growers and flower 3-4 times a year as mature plants.  Ctsm. denticulatum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 oF and humidity at 50% or higher.  Better get these now - who knows when one will flower female again!

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Portagee Star 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Louise Clarke 'Simply Fantastic')

The Portagee Star has yellow flowers with excellent shape and a flat lip brushed in burgundy.  The Louise Clarke is simply fantastic - superb flower quality, high flower count, huge lips, and blooms 4-5 times a year.  Expect burgundy to yellow flowers with darker spotting, large full lips and the ability to bloom 3-4 times a year.  This is one of the best new standard Catasetum crosses today.

Fdk. NEW HYBRID (Fdk. Frank Smith 'SVO' FCC/AOS  x Fdk. Dark Matter 'SVO')

Fredclarkeara breeding is just fantastic, with hybrids having beautiful color, superior shape, high flower count, and perfectly arranged flowers that are fragrant and long lasting.  Frank Smith 'SVO' (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. John C. Burchett) is no exception, and its flower color is very dark, sometimes appearing to be black. The parents of Dark Matter (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'JTM') have excellent flower color and shape, and are free blooming. This is the first time we have crosses a Fredclarkeara x Fredclarkeara - this has to be good!

Fdk. NEW HYBRID (Ctmds. Dragons Tail 'Dark Tale' x Clo. Jumbo Lace 'SVO')

This grex is a Fredclarkeara, as it has Catasetum, Mormodes and Clowesia in its background.  In this cross, however, an unusual path has been taken to combine the three genera.  Dragons Tail (Ctsm. denticulatum x Morm. ignea) has amazing-looking flowers, almost scale-like, with deep colors and flat lips.  Jumbo Lace (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. fimbriatum) has yellow flowers peppered with dark burgundy spots and a frilly lip, and has the added benefit of blooming twice a year.  I can hardly wait to see these flower!  I am expecting 13 to 15 yellow flowers, covered with coalescing dark burgundy spots, and with flattened fimbriate lips.  Flower life in existing Fredclarkearas is 6-7 weeks, and it will be interesting to see if this cross has the same quality.

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is well proven as a parent, imparting many fine traits to its progeny.  Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' has solid bright yellow flowers of the highest quality with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 blooms apiece.  The lip of spitzii is thick and solid - almost like it's formed from yellow wax.  This hard, flat lip should be valuable in flattening out the lip in the grex.  The expectation is for long-lasting, mostly red flowers with contrasting flat lips.  Flower shape should be beautiful, and flower count will be high, as both parents can carry 25 or more blooms.  This is a highly anticipated cross with lots of potential to produce some exceptional Fredclarkeara offspring.

The grex of Dark There After (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. Donna Wise) has produced several significant plants, with five receiving AOS awards thus far.  'SVO Winter's Night' FCC/AOS is truly spectacular, with perfectly arranged flowers that are large, flat, and dark burgundy.  Orchidglade 'JTM' is short for 'Jamie's Tortured Midnight' (pileatum x expansum).  This clone has exceptionally large and very dark burgundy flowers.  This new Freclarkeara will further the improvement of flower size and continue to reinforce the dark burgundy color.  These will be fantastic!

Cyc. Maren Gleason (Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. Martha Clarke 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This warscewiczii has superb flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  The Martha Clarke (herrenhusanum x barthiorum) is truly special, which is why I named it for my wife!  The swan-shaped flowers of Martha Clarke are orange/yellow with dark burgundy spots - amazing colors!  The addition of warscewiczii genes will result in a significant improvement to the overall size, shape, and form.  Large yellow/green flowers with many having red spots - oh my!  Picture of first to bloom  Pic 1 ,  Pic 2

Cyc. Pineapple Popcorn (Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. Kevin Clarke 'SVO' FCC/AOS)

Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' has an excellent flower with good size, count, shape and blooming habit.  It is a proven grower and one of the best warscewiczii out there.  Kevin Clarke (herrenhusanum x warscewiczii) is truly special.  It is named for my younger son and the first Cycnoches hybrid from SVO to receive a coveted First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society.  The swan-shaped flowers of Kevin Clarke are bright yellow with faint gold spots -- an amazing color -- not to mention the two inflorescences carrying 30 perfectly arranged blooms.  Cyc. Kevin Clarke already has improved lip size and form.  The second addition of warscewiczii genes will result in a significant contribution to the overall size, shape, form and lip qualities of this grex.  It's hard to improve on an FCC, but this has the potential to do just that! Fdk. NEW HYBRID (Fdk. Saturn Sky 'SVO' x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS )

Fredclarkearas are mostly known for their dark flower colors, but with this grex we are exploring the potential to produce plants with other flower colors by breeding with Saturn Sky (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. Frilly Doris), which has densely spotted plum/red blooms.  Susan Fuchs (Orchidglade x expansum) is a proven breeder that needs little introduction, carrying magnificent large yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting.  I believe that the color genes in the background of this cross will assure brightly colored flowers.  Look for this pairing to produce long, graceful inflorescences carrying 15-25 long-lived yellow flowers with red spots and excellent form.

Ctsm. Double Down (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'Wow' x Ctsm. kleberianum 'SVO)

Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (Portagee Star x denticulatum is a very nice mini-Catasetum, with light pink petals and sepals, and a contrasting yellow lip.  It's just beautiful!  Ctsm. kleberianum is a great mini-Catasetum, with a bright yellow lip and dark barring on the petals and sepals that produce a striking color combination.  As a bonus, it also carries 15 or more flowers per stem.  These will be mini-Catasetums with bright yellow lips, and the petals and sepals will have dark bars, some of which will be solid burgundy!   This is one of those 'not to be missed' mini-Catasetums. Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is the parent of the world-famous Fdk. After Dark.  The influence of Mormodia (Mo.) is well known: it adds flower color, multiple pendulous inflorescences and flower longevity to its offspring.  Ctsm. Louise Clarke is named for my mother and is a spectacular hybrid.  The cultivar 'Simply Fantastic' has superb flower quality, high flower count, huge hard flat lips and flowers 3-4 times a year.  The Ctsm. Louise Clarke adds an additional dose of pileatum and expansum, which will provide improved flower size and lip width.  What about color?  I believe that the deep red from Mo. Painted Desert combined with the dark brown of Ctsm. Louise Clarke will lead to red blooms with darker spots, but this cross has the potential to produce black-colored flowers.  All will have excellent form, arrangement and flower count.   Picture of first to bloom Pic 1   Same as SVO 6173

Ctsm. Fong Cing (Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Jack of Diamonds' AM/AOS x Ctsm. José Abalo 'SVO')

This Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) has dark red flowers and an exceptionally large lip.  The José Abalo (sanguineum x Orchidglade) has a 2 foot long stem carrying 20 dark burgundy flowers with black lips.  This grex was very successful when made with the heavily spotted Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Davie Ranches' AM/AOS, and many plants flowered with strong stems of heavy blooms, deeply spotted with burgundy.  Here are some pictures from that first group. Pic 1 , Pic 2 .  This remake using 'Jack of Diamonds' is designed to reinforce the dark burgundy flower.  I am expecting most to be surprisingly large, dark burgundy flowers on strong stems.  These will be fantastic!

'Jumbo Mutation' was selected from a large group of flowering clones.  It really stood out as an exceptional flower, clearly a meristem shift (mutation) for the better.  'OMG' is a result of our line breeding and carries excellent flowers showing considerable improvement in petal width.  I believe that this group will set a new standard in quality for this highly desirable species.

A Cycnoches with yellow flowers and red spots is pretty cool!  The grex Anne-Kathrin Berger (pentadactylon x herrenhusanum) has what I am looking for: great color, high flower count and ease of plant growth.  The pentadactylon parent has flowers with dark burgundy spots.  The expectation is for boldly spotted flowers in shades of yellow, with many flowers per stem and excellent arrangement.

Ctsm. pileatum (Ctsm. pileatum 'Dinner Plate' x Ctsm. pileatum 'Jumbo Green Gold' HCC/AOS)

Ctsm.  pileatum is the 'king and queen' of the Catasetums.  These will have large 4-5” flowers, impressive broad green lips, and 10-13 flowers per inflorescence, blooming 2 or 3 times a year.  Several flowered last year and were stunning.  All I can say is "Wow!"

Ctsm. tigrinum (Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO II' x self)

This is a great species: a small-growing plant producing white flowers with light red spots.  Mature plants carry 15-25 flowers and can flower 2 to 3 times a season.  This plant is very rare in the USA and its homeland of Brazil.  This is the first significant offering I am aware of.  If you collect species, this is a must-have!

Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale (Ctsm. pileatum v. imperale 'Pierre Couret' HCC/AOS x self)

This pileatum is the imperiale type, and the flowers have quite a bit of red color in them.  It was collected many years ago in Venezuela, and a piece was given to Marcel Lecoufle to be meristemed.  The clonal name 'Pierre Couret' was given to honor one of the founders of the Caracas Orchid Society.  Ctsm. pileatum var. imperiale is only found in a very specific area of Apure state, and some feel that it represents a complex natural hybrid between macrocarpum and pileatum (named xtapiriceps), which then was naturally crossed back to pileatum several times.  Both of the suspected parents grow in the same area, making an introgression between them possible. There are many who would like to understand v. imperiale better, and through the selfing we will be able to see if any of the progeny express characteristics of macrocarpum.  I predict that these will have the broad pileatum shaped lips in colors that tend toward a mixture of solid to blotched red flowers, with a few yellow or green.  The cultivar 'Pierre Couret' is very uncommon in cultivation, and this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of pileatum history.

Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale (Ctsm. pileatum v. imperale 'Pierre Couret' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum v. pileatum 'SVO Blood Red')

Many believe that C. pileatum v. imperiale is a natural hybrid involving macrocarpum and pileatum.  With this cross, we are testing that belief, and doing so by combining the two superior v. imperiale cultivars, 'Pierre Couret' and 'SVO Blood Red'.  The evaluation of the offspring will help to determine if v. imperiale represents a species, in which case there should be little variation among the offspring, or a hybrid, which should produce variable progeny.  I predict that many will have solid red flowers with large pileatum-shaped red lips, some blotched red and a few green, too.  A once is a life time unique opportunity in evaluating v. imperale.

Cyc. Anne-Kathrin Berger (Cyc. Anne-Kathrin Berger 'SVO' x self )

I really like the color combination of Anne-Kathrin Berger (pentadactylon x herrenhusanum).  Its long inflorescences with many yellow flowers peppered in red spots are really attractive.  So...I selfed it.  These are proving easy to grow and flower at a young age in 3” pots. Very rare in cultivation, I believe this is the first large offering of this great grex.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO' x Ctsm. Alexa 'Good One')

When Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum) was first introduced, it caused a sensation with hobbyists around the country as the first of the mini-Catasetums.  Its flowers are bright yellow with coalescing dark burgundy spots.  Alexa (Bela Vista's Sangria x denticulatum) is the largest, fullest and darkest of the first-generation mini-Catasetums.  It is a real standout!  These plants will mature at only 5” tall and have relatively large blooms in rich colors of dark burgundy, with yellow lips covered with bold burgundy spots and blotches.  This is your chance to get a really special hybrid.  Everyone has space for at least one more mini-Catasetum.  Expect 15-20 flowers per inflorescence on plants that flower 2-3 times per season.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (John C. Burchett 'Ursa Major' FCC/AOS x denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

I have wanted to make this cross for some time, and it's finally here!  John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is the pinnacle of pileatum-based Catasetum breeding today.  Its dark burgundy flowers are fantastic in every way: size, color, shape - you name it!  Crossing it to denticulatum will reduce plant size down into the mini-Catasetum range.  I also expect solid dark colored flowers, but some will be deeply spotted.  These will be amazing!  As an added benefit these will flower 2-3 times a season.  It wasn't easy to make this cross, and once these are gone, I'm not sure when I'll be able to produce them again.

Clo. NEW HYBRID (Clo. Black Jade 'JEM' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Frilly Doris 'SVOII' AM/AOS)

Here is a real different hybrid for me.  I have been watching this style of breeding out of South Florida and decided to do a test cross along similar lines.  Black Jade (Cl. russelliana x Ctsm. expansum) flowers with long (two feet!) pendulous inflorescences carrying 30 to 35 avocado green flowers with a big black spot in the throat.  The flower form is poor, with pinched petals and narrow lips common to Cl. russelliana hybrids.  Frilly Doris (Doris's Choice x Dona Marie) is a well know breeding plant and makes a good starting point, as it gives predictable results, imparting good flower form, a fimbriate lip, and well arranged flowers.  These will be floriferous plant producing long cascading stems with 25-30 flowers.  Flower color will be green, with many having spots and a big dark spot of black on the lip.  Form will be improved, with broader petals, and the lip will larger and flattened.  I am looking forward to seeing how these turn out!

Frank Smith 'SVO' (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. John C. Burchett) is just fantastic, with superior shape, high flower count, perfectly arranged blooms, long lasting flowers, and a flower color that is very dark, appearing to be black.  John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is the pinnacle of pileatum-based Catasetum breeding today.  Its dark burgundy flowers are fantastic in every way: size, color, shape, etc.  This cross represents line breeding at its finest!  The Frank Smith is already fantastic, but adding back the huge pileatum-based lip of John C. Burchett will further increase and flatten the flower and lip size of the progeny, while maintaining the amazing color.  I'm not sure how it can get any better than this...

Cycnodes (Cycd.) hybrids come from the combination of Cycnoches and Mormodes.  This type of primary hybrid gets the best qualities from both parents: the Mormodes is dominant for color, and the Cycnoches is dominant for shape.  Cycnodes hybrids have a proven track record, giving excellent quality flowers that garner lots of AOS awards.  Spotted Hornet already has received an AM/AOS and a FCC/AOS!  The warscewiczii 'SVO Swan' has the highest flower quality, and the Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) has amazing color.  These are going to be bright yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting, and the blooms will have excellent shape and size.  This grex has very high award potential.  As a bonus, I also was able to make the reciprocal hybrid, SVO 6529.  This will allow for the rare opportunity to compare the influence of pod vs. pollen parent on the progeny. Here are the pictures of the awarded plants Pic 1, Pic 2.

Cycd. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. lehmanii 'SVO' x Morm. Wild Rainbow 'BB')

Cycnoches lehmanii produced the popular and widely distributed grex Cycd. Wine Delight (Cyc. lehmanii x Morm. sinuata).  We also expect it to be a great parent here, as Cycnoches is dominant for flower shape.  Morm. Wild Rainbow (andicola x rolfeana) was made by Brent Baker and is one of my favorites.  It has excellent color: dark burnt orange flowers with burgundy spots and a red lip spotted with burgundy.  These are going to have excellent shape and size, and the dark red flowers will have bold burgundy spotting.  Lots of award potential from this grex.

Fdk. NEW HYBRID (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'SVO')

This is a new direction in Fredclarkeara breeding!  Because of the Karen Armstrong influence, these plants will stay under 8” tall, which makes this a mini-Fredclarkeara!!!  Can you tell how excited I am?  We know how influential Painted Desert is in breeding, producing excellent form, color and flower longevity.  It is also a small-growing plant that matures only at 6” tall.  Here we've paired it with the mini-Catasetum Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum), with its bright yellow flowers covered in coalescing burgundy spots.  The combination will make this grex a star!  Flower colors will range from deep red to spotted red/burgundy, and we expect excellent form, high flower count, and pleasing arrangement.  The plants will stay small and produce 2-3 inflorescences per bulb.  I am already anxious to see this bloom!

Here is another mini-Fredclarkeara!  The influence of Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is well documented, imparting excellent form, color and flower longevity to its progeny.  The mini-Catasetum Alexa (Bela Vista's Sangria x denticulatum) 'Good One' is the largest, fullest and darkest I have seen from the cross; it really is a standout!  These flowers will range in colors from the darkest burgundy to deep red.  They also will have a high flower count, excellent form and be well arranged.  The mature plants will be 6-8” tall and produce 2-3 inflorescences per bulb.  I can hardly wait!

Cyc. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO' x Cyc. Swan Cascade 'Best Select')

This cross represents some of the most modern Cycnoches breeding today.  As advanced breeding is taking us farther away from the influence of the species, we are finding that the plants are easier to grow.  Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) was a real breakthrough: superbly-shaped flowers with shield-shaped lips, high flower count, heavy substance and amazing colors.  Swan Cascade (Jean E. Monnier x cooperi) has also produced excellent offspring, with 'Best Select' having particularly long inflorescences carrying 25-27 flowers.  The expectation here is for bronze flowers with darker burgundy spots, shield-shaped lips, and long inflorescences carrying 20 or more flowers.  You can't go wrong with this one!

Desert Tenor (Mo. Morm. NEW HYBRID (Morm. Wild Rainbow 'BB'  x Morm. Nitty Gritty 'Darkness')

The late season flowering of Mormodes signals that winter is nearly here, and the bizarre colors, twisted flowers and spicy fragrance typify these last Catasetinae flowers of the season.  Wild Rainbow (andicola x rolfeana) was made by Brent Baker.  It has excellent flowers in burgundy, spotted with dark burnt orange and a spotted burgundy red lip.  The Nitty Gritty (Exotic Treat x rolfeana) is an extra dark burnt orange covered with burgundy spots, and a dark red lip.  This grex is an excellent and highly advanced Mormodes hybrid.  These plants are growing really well, will produce 3-4 inflorescences per bulb when mature and produce some amazing and unusually dark flower colors.

Super easy to grow and bloom.

Dark There After (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. 'SVO Swan' has the widest petals and fullest flowers I have seen and can carry 5-7 flowers per inflorescence.  I cannot imagine a better pairing and believe this cross will set the new standard of quality.  These are for the discriminating collector, who what the very best potential is this amazing species.

It has not been exhibited but appears in every regard to be FCC quality.  John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is the pinnacle of pileatum-based Catasetum breeding today.  Its dark burgundy flowers have fantastic size, color and shape.  I am expecting very dark flowers, some nearly black.  These will have excellent flower quantity, form, arrangement, size, fragrance and longevity.

When a Clowesia (Cl.) is crossed with a Catasetum (Ctsm.), the hybrid genus Clowesetum (Clo.) is created.  The flowers become 'perfect' (bearing both male and female structures), and bloom longevity is extended to 3-4 weeks or more.  Cl. Rebecca Northen 'Grapefruit Pink' produces 20 or more frilly pink flowers on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid winter.  Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' has solid bright yellow flowers with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 blooms apiece.  The lip of spitzii is thick and solid - almost like it's formed from yellow wax; this should be valuable in flattening out the lips of its progeny.  I really like Clowesetums: the flowers look like Catasetums, but instead of flowering throughout the year, they bloom like Clowesias, with 3-4 inflorescences produced all at once.  These plants are growing vigorously and will produce fragrant, shapely bright yellow flowers on long pendulous inflorescences in late fall and early winter. The hope is for a high percentage of yellow flowers with fine red spots. Flower shape will be excellent, and the pendant inflorescences will have 13- 15 well arranged flowers.  I am very optimistic about the results here.

An FCC/AOS is the highest accolade that AOS judges can confer.  The Spotted Hornet (Morm. Exotic Treat x Cyc. warscewiczii) has superior color, with the sepals and petals a bright yellow-green spotted mahogany and an orange lip, spotted with mahogany.  This grex exhibited the best qualities that result when a Mormodes and a Cycnoches are combined: the Mormodes is dominant for color and the Cycnoches is dominant for shape.  By line breeding back to Cyc. warscewiczii, I predict improvement in flower form with wider and flatter blooms.  I am also expecting  the flower color to prevail, as it is dominated by the Mormodes.  These have lots of potential for the 'best yet' in Cycnodes breeding.
