Sunset Valley Orchids Catasetinae Plant Offering

For 2019-20, I am pleased to share the one of the most comprehensive selection of Catasetinae hybrids and species offered.  Through the ongoing process of collecting, selecting, and developing our parental lines, the quality of the breeding stock is now without compare.  These new hybrids will set the standard for flower quality, plant vigor, and your enjoyment.

We have been working on the development of advanced breeding lines for Cycnoches.  I just love the elegant swan-shaped blooms; they truly are the most breathtaking flowers in the genus.  Our Cycnoches breeding program has been evaluating 100's of potential parents with selections being made for plants exhibiting: plant vigor, flower quality, flower color, and resistance to back bulb die-off.  As our Cycnoches species and hybrids have been through this selection process for three to four generations the resulting improvements in flower quality and ease of culture are well evident.

Cycnodes (Cycnoches x Mormodes) are a great paring they are a 'match made in heaven' with the best qualities of each parent come out, resulting in fantastic color combinations and large shapely flowers.

By popular demand, we have produced a few more standard-sized Catasetum crosses.  The large flowers are really amazing!  These new crosses have superior genetics and are producing some really superb flowers.

We also are continuing the successful “mini-Catasetum” and “mini-Clowesetum” crosses, including the introduction of several very promising new ones.  This is a new plant form that has gained considerable attention from collectors.  Besides being compact growers, these plants consistently flower 2-4 times a year!

This year we are splitting the new Catasetinae catalog in two, with the first half of plants being listed now and the second half to be released about a month later.  You will be impressed with the crosses in the second release.

Good growing,

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (Ctsm. denticulatum 'Wide Petals' x Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO')
Every once in a while, a cross is so impressive that you want to re-make it as soon as possible. So I made it twice using different denticulatums. ‘Wide Petals’ is aptly named, with the widest petals I have seen in a denticulatum flower. With saved pollen from my best tigrinum, the cross was re-made. These will have spectacular flowers on miniature plants that bloom 2-3 times a season. Take a look at these photos:  Pic , Pic, Pic  Really excellent and highly recommended!

Cl. rosea Cl. rosea 'SVO'
x self)
This is a well-known but rarely available small-growing Clowesia species. Its natural habitat is along the west slopes facing the Pacific Ocean in the Mexican states of Michoacán and Oaxaca. This species flowers in early winter on deciduous leafless bulbs that produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences carrying 15 or more soft pink flowers with cute frilly lips. This is a plant I have had in my collection for many years, and it has excellent vigor and is a reliable bloomer with good quality flowers. VERY LIMITED PLANT AVAILABILITY

Cyc. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Cryminy 'Killer'x Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

Cyc. Cryminy (Richard Brandon x Cyc. Kevin Clarke) ‘Killer’ has color never before seen in a Cycnoches. The base color is bronze/yellow, with bold burgundy spots that coalesce into large solid patches, set off by a contrasting white lip. Just remarkable! Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) produces robust-growing plants that are easy to bloom, with high-quality well-shaped flowers. This outstanding grex is becoming my go-to parent for making modern Cycnoches hybrids. What will this cross deliver? I expect novel flower color combinations in gold and bronze, deeply spotted with burgundy. Plants should produce 15-20 flowers per inflorescence. As a bonus, these will be easy to grow and flower. The reciprocal cross is available as SVO 8172, providing a rare opportunity to see how capsule and pollen parents differ in their contribution to the offspring.  VERY LIMITED PLANT AVAILABILITY

Fdk. NEW HYBRID (Mo. Barnabas Collins 'SVO Dark Night' FCC/AOS x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'JTM')
Barnabas Collins is a new Mormodia (Clowesia x Mormodes) hybrid registered in 2014, and one cultivar from this grex has already received a coveted First Class Certificate from the American Orchid Society. When awarded, 'SVO Dark Night' produced 117 flowers and buds on 7 inflorescences, all from one pseudobulb!!! If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it! The flower is a deep wine color with darker burgundy spotting – truly gorgeous! If this sounds appealing, look a bit farther down this list and you’ll find a remake of Mo. Barnabas Collins (SVO 8189). The other parent of this grex is Ctsm. Orchidglade, a trusted breeding plant that has been proven many times over to impart excellent growth habit and lots of large, well-shaped, solid dark burgundy flowers that are produced several times a year. The cultivar 'JTM' is short for 'Jamie's Tortured Midnight.'  This is a new Fredclarkeara hybrid using an exceptional Mormodia and a proven breeder in 'JTM.'  I can only dream of the possibilities until these start to bloom!  If I were a betting man, I would definitely put money on this one.

Ctsm. Russ Wood (Ctsm. kleberianum 'SVO' x Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO'

Everybody has space for mini-Catasetums! Ctsm. kleberianum is very rare in nature, and some suspect that it may be extinct in the wild. It is a small-growing species with attractive flowers sporting a flat bright yellow lip. Ctsm. tigrinum is a showy species, with white flowers spotted in light pink displayed 2-3 times a season in impressive cascades of 20-25 blooms. These mini-Catasetums will be easy-to-bloom and produce high flower counts multiple times each season.  How about flower color? We are expecting white petals and sepals boldly spotted in burgundy with contrasting yellow lips - very cool!

Mo. B-C Elvira  (Cl. Rebecca Northen 'Hill Top' x Morm. Nitty-Gritty 'Gold and Bronze')

Cl. Rebecca Northen (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea) is a well-recognized plant and very good for breeding. It is easy to grow and has beautiful frilly pink flowers with a marvelous citrus fragrance, held on multiple pendent inflorescences.  Morm. Nitty Gritty (Exotic Treat x rolfeana) has deeply-colored flowers with gold lips and red petals and sepals. Flowers are large, and the plants are very floriferous.  These will flower late in the year, with cascades of 12-15 flowers in shades of yellow/orange to rose, many with dark spots. Mormodias result when a Clowesia and a Mormodes are combined, and they make spectacular hybrids. Mature plants will produce many fragrant flowers cascading over the side of the pot.

Cl. NEW HYBRID (Cl. Grace Dunn 'Live Oak' HCC/AOS x Cl. dodsoniana 'Nadia Tavarez' AM/AOS)

Made by our friend Mark Margolis, I believe this is a particularly insightful hybrid. There are only a few hybrids of this type that combine Clowesias with different bloom seasons. Here the winter blooming Clowesia Grace Dunn is crossed with the early summer blooming species Clowesia dodsoniana.  The flower longevity of Clowesia blooms is generally 3-5 weeks, and this is an important reason we like to use them in breeding.  Grace Dunn (warczewitzii x rosea) blooms from leafless bulbs in mid-winter and carries 15+ solid pink and green lemon-scented flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences. Cl. dodsoniana has light green flowers with darker green stripes and a bit of lavender suffusion on the petals. Blooms are produced in early summer, and it is common for plants to produce two inflorescences with 30 or more highly fragrant blooms!  The $64 dollar question is: “will these bloom in summer and again in the early winter?” I sure hope the answer is, yes!  Picture this: multiple cascading inflorescences of 20 or more, fragrant, long-lived, green flowers with green stripes in the summer and again in the winter!!!

Ctsm. osculatum (Ctsm. osculatum 'Kisses' x self)

We offer a few select Catasetum species every year, and this is our first offering of one of our favorite species. Of course, it’s hard to pick favorites, but osculatum is near the top of the list, in part because of its name which is derived from the word “osculate” meaning “kiss.” If you use your imagination when viewing the lip of the flower, you can envision a mouth and red lips.  Flowers are an impressive bright yellow color and are produced 10-15 per inflorescence twice a year.  We bloomed many plants to locate the exceptional cultivar ‘Kisses’. Cycd. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Richard Brandon 'Xtra Wide Petals' x Morm. Exotic Treat 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Here we are on different path, in fact a new path. This is the first intergeneric hybrid using complex hybrids of Cycnoches and Mormodes. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) produces robust-growing, easy-to-bloom plants. The cultivar ‘Xtra Wide Petals’ has the highest-quality well-shaped flowers seen from any Richard Brandon, and it is becoming an important parent in our breeding program. This Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) has amazing color, with bright orange-yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting. As a bonus, mature plants can produce 3-4 flower stems at a time. We know from experience that this type of breeding combines the best qualities from both parents: the Cycnoches is dominant for shape, and the Mormodes is dominant for color.  I am very anxious to see these bloom! The expectation is for well-shaped yellow to bronze flowers with bold burgundy spotting.

Cyc. Brown's Choice (Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Cyc. Swan Cascade 'Best Select')

I am such a fan of these modern Cycnoches hybrids. They’re easy to grow, mature quickly and produce impressive flowers. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) has been proving itself as a significant parent, with its fine flower shape, color, ease of growth and ability to bloom with 14-16 flowers per stem. Swan Cascade (cooperi x Jean E. Monnier) is incredibly floriferous, regularly producing 35-45 flowers per inflorescence, and the flower color favors the rich bronze/chocolate colors of Cyc. cooperi. I bet this cross will average 25 flowers per inflorescence, and flowers will be richly colored, many spotted with dark burgundy.  An excellent pairing for creating Bronze Swans…

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Dentigrianum 'SVO Cutie' x Ctsm. tenebrosum 'Ed Wise #2' AM/AOS)

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) is a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding. It's a primary hybrid, but what it lacks in genealogical complexity it makes up for in charm, with beautifully-formed flowers in white, spotted with burgundy, a soft yellow lip, and the ability to bloom several times a year. Ctsm. tenebrosum is the first Catasetum species to bloom each year, and this recently-awarded cultivar has excellent flowers with flat petals and sepals in a beautiful dark burgundy and a contrasting green lip, all on upright stems of 15-20 blossoms.  This cross should yield compact plants that will flower two, three or ever four times a season.  Flowers will be boldly spotted in dark burgundy with flat soft yellow lips.

Cyc. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Jumbo Cooper 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. Swan Cascade 'Best Select'

The flower quality, size and count (18 on a single inflorescence) of Jumbo Cooper 'SVO' are impressive. It was bred from the rare green cultivar Cyc. cooperi 'Green Emerald' HCC/AOS and the very fine Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS. Swan Cascade (cooperi x Jean E. Monnier) is incredibly floriferous, with an average stem carrying 35-45 flowers in colors favoring the rich bronze/chocolate colors of cooperi. The double influence of cooperi will assure high flower count (expect 25 blooms per stem), and the dose of warscewiczii will improve flower shape and produce shield-shaped lips. Flower colors will be green-bronze, with some flowers sporting burgundy spotting. All in all, this is a good one. CHECK OUT THE FIRST TO BLOOM  PICTURE

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Brent's Black Hawk 'Xlnt' x Ctsm. Dark Tale 'Black Surprise'

The genetic makeup of Brent's Black Hawk (Donna Wise x tenebrosum) is 75% tenebrosum and 12.5% each pileatum and expansum. The cultivar 'Xlnt' looks like a super improved tenebrosum, with larger, fuller and more beautiful flowers.     Solid black Catasetum breeding has been elusive, but Dark Tale (Donna Wise x Louise Clarke) 'Black Surprise' has given us hope. The flowers of 'Black Surprise' are so dark that they're hard to see among the dark shadows created by the leaves. There is tremendous potential here for solid black Catasetum breeding. This grex is 57% tenebrosum, 25% expansum and 18% pileatum. Will this be the perfect genetic combination?

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Hoorah' x Ctsm. Isobel's Sunshine 'SVO'

Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) 'Hoorah' is particularly beautiful due to the yellow base color of the lip and red markings throughout. This Isobel's Sunshine (Portagee Star x kleberianum) has a bright yellow lip with dark bars of burgundy on the petals and sepals. Here we are aiming for large flat yellow lips with red to burgundy petals and sepals, all on a mini-Catasetum plant.  We liked the combination so much we made the cross twice! See SVO 8096.

One of the first notable mini-Catasetum crosses was Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star). The cultivar 'SVO Sunshine' has particularly attractive flowers and is quite floriferous. Ctsm. tigrinum is a showy species, with white flowers spotted in light pink, displayed in impressive cascades of 20-25 blooms, 2 to 3 times a season. This new mini-Catasetum will produce flowers in pastel colors, spotted with burgundy, and will be easy to bloom, flowering several times a season.

Ctsm. Mem. Darrel John (Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Bombshell' x Ctsm. Extravaganza 'Killer Lips')

One of my favorite mini-Catasetums is Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) 'Bombshell' I wait every summer to see the long inflorescences of flowers with white lips spotted in burgundy. Extravaganza (Karen Armstrong x Louise Clarke) 'Killer Lips' really has a memorable white lip color and bold patterning.  This cross is all about eye catching white lips with bold burgundy spotting on mini-Catasetum plants.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm.  Extravaganza 'Super Nice' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Super Nice')

With both cultivars named 'Super Nice,' guess what we are expecting? Of course, super nice flowers! Extravaganza (Karen Armstrong x Louise Clarke) has surprisingly large flowers for the plant size, and Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum) has flowers in bold colors. This mini-Catasetum will be easy to grow and will flower freely, with large richly-colored flowers on small plants. Outstanding first to bloom plant, these are looking good!  Picture

Ctsm. Sweet Adaline (Ctsm. Louise Clarke 'Wonder Woman' x Ctsm. Dagny 'Fantastica')

This is traditional Catasetum breeding for impressive large flowers with huge lips on arching inflorescences.  The grex Louise Clarke (Susan Fuchs x Donna Wise) is my mother's namesake. This is a particularly noteworthy cultivar that regularly blooms with as many as 7 inflorescences from one pseudobulb, thus the cultivar name 'Wonder Woman'!  Dagny (pileatum x Brent's Black Hawk) 'Fantastica' is also remarkable for its high flower count, deep burgundy flower color and yellow callus in the center of the lip.  We expect these plants to bloom several times a season with large, beautifully-colored deep burgundy flowers with very impressive lips.

Ctsm. pileatum (Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale 'Pierre Couret' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum f. album 'Snow White' FCC/AOS)

The cultivar name for this rare color form of Ctsm. pileatum var. imperiale was given to honor Pierre Couret, one of the founders of the Venezuela Orchid Society in Caracas.  He sent a piece of the plant to Marcel Lecoufle in France to be meristemed, and thus this rare color form is available for others to enjoy. The pileatum f. album is outstanding, receiving an FCC/AOS with its huge, pure white flowers.  It's also the most floriferous cultivar in my collection, and a single bulb can produce two inflorescences holding as many as 25 white flowers each. This pairing was made to create a range of flower colors: white, pink, coral and red. Each one will be a unique masterpiece!

Ctsm. callosum (Ctsm. callosum 'SVO Black Lip' AM/AOS x self)

This unusual species is rarely offered for sale. In fact, I have only seen it offered twice before. The last time, I bought 10 plants, and from that group the superior cultivar 'SVO Black Lip' was named and awarded. It flowers reliably twice a year, and we were fortunate that the first blooming produced male flowers followed by female flowers a month later.  Having saved pollen, a selfing was made. Very collectable and very limited plant supply

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Gypsy Soul 'Chocolate Spots' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Super Nice')

When Gypsy Soul (Frilly Doris x denticulatum) 'Chocolate Spots' first bloomed, the amazing color, high flower count and large flower size made this plant an instant “keeper.” Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum) has boldly marked flowers with prominent yellow, burgundy and chestnut colors. It is a reliable grower and bloomer. These will be mini-Catasetum plants with frilly lips and richly colored flowers.

Clo. NEW HYBRID (Clo. Jem's Speckled Russ 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Double Down 'XDPYL')

JEM's Speckled Russ (Cl. russelliana x Ctsm. denticulatum) is one of the few hybrids made with a summer blooming Clowesia and the small-growing Catasetum denticulatum. When awarded, this plant carried 126 white flowers peppered with maroon spots on three pendulous, foxtail-like inflorescences. This exceptional cultivar of Double Down (Chuck Taylor x kleberianum) has flowers highlighted by a bright yellow lip and dark petals and sepals, thus the name Xtra Dark Petals Yellow Lip.  This cross was made because the parental plants have a small stature and excellent floral qualities. Clowesetum is known for flower longevity and high flower count, and the Catasetum will contribute outstanding flower color. This cross will be a mini-Clowesetum, assuring significant flower life and lots of blooms with boldly spotted petals and sepals and yellow lips. This will be a home run!

Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Portagee Star 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' HCC/AOS)

I have wanted to do an exact re-make of this mini-Catasetum for quite a while, but it can be a challenge to get female flowers!  In 2018, we finally had a number of plants produce female flowers, and an exact remake of the original was accomplished. It’s always fun to go back and see how you thought the cross would turn out. Here is the description written in 2010: “Ctsm. Portagee Star (Ctsm. expansum x Ctsm. Black Knight) interestingly this grex has the 3 same parental species as the famous Ctsm. Donna Wise, pileatum, expansum, and tenebrosum. 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' carries up to 15 flowers in shades of yellow and burgundy, very attractive. The denticulatum has a nice yellow lip, 25 flowers and is a small growing plant. Here we are breeding in a new direction for reduced plant size while keeping good flower color and high flower count.”  Chuck Taylors have been landmark mini-Catasetums: small-growing and easy to flower with attractive blooms. Check out THIS PICTURE from the first blooming. This is also a rare opportunity to evaluate the results from a reciprocal Catasetum cross, which is available as SVO 8116.

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) is a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding, with beautifully-formed flowers in white, spotted with burgundy, and a soft yellow lip. They are excellent bloomers, and mature plants frequently flower three times a year.  Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) ‘SVO Sunshine’ has particularly attractive flowers with a yellow lip and is quite floriferous, with mature plants blooming two to three times a year.  This grex will produce small-growing plants that bloom frequently. Best of all the flowers will have yellow lips with spotted petals and sepals.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Millie's Frilly Doris 'Chocolate Frills' x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Dark Darling')

As some of you long-time Catasetum growers know, I've been obsessed for many years with frilly-lipped flowers. Millie's Frilly Dragon (Frilly Doris x Voodoo Dragon) 'Chocolate Frills' has flowers with excellent frilly lips in shades of orange and petals and sepals a rich milk chocolate color. The plant grows robustly and produces lots of flowers on long inflorescences. The flowers of Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum) 'Dark Darling' are boldly colored with yellow lips and prominent red spotting on all segments. Here we are looking for the frilly lip trait to be dominant. Flowers will be boldly spotted in red, and many will have lips in yellow to orange with varying degrees of spotting. I am looking forward to seeing these bloom!

Marlene Young (expansum x denticulatum) has an unusual flower color: a light cream with tan markings. I have seen very few Catasetums like this, and I was motivated to make this cross with Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum).  'Super Nice' is a proven breeder for boldly colored flowers, excellent flower shape, ease of growth, and the ability to bloom several times a year.  This is a mini-Catasetum with all the good qualities that come with this style of breeding, as well as the desirable tan markings.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. De Etta Harris 'Green Goddess' x Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Snow White')

I believed this is an inspired cross.  The flowers of De Etta Harris (Donna Wise x Crownfox Voodoo) 'Emerald Goddess' are a surprisingly deep emerald green, a color rarely seen. Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) 'Snow White' is truly amazing, with nearly pure white flowers that are perfectly arranged.  Why is this an inspired cross?  The range of flower colors will be remarkable: white to green, some pinks and rose colors, and even a few red shades.  Combine this with excellent flower shape and presentation, and you have a great cross.

Ctsm. Karen Armstrong (Ctsm. denticulatum 'Dark Spots' x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS)

When this cross was first introduced, it caused a sensation with hobbyists around the world.  This was the first of the new mini-Catasetum breeding line.  Mature plants are only 5” tall with relatively large blooms, and flowers come in rich yellow colors with bold burgundy spots.  It has taken several years to get female flowers for a remake, but it finally happened.  Here is an opportunity to get a really special hybrid, and because of the plants' small stature, everyone has space for at least one of these.  Expect 15-20 flowers per inflorescence, two to three times per season.  Pictures from the first batch:  PICTURE, PICTURE, PICTURE

Cl. thylaciochila (Cl. thylaciochila 'XLNT' x Cl. thylaciochila 'Green')

Here is a really special and rare offering. This seldom-seen Clowesia species has a name that is a bit complicated to pronounce: thylaciochila (thigh-lass-see-OH-kye-lah).  It is native to Mexico, growing along the Pacific coastline in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca. I spent years trying to source this species, but it was elusive.  Finally, I was lucky enough to locate some plants, and they have grown into impressive specimens.  Flowers are produced in late June with the developing new growths, making them the first Clowesia species of the year to flower.  Flower production is incredible: hundreds of light green flowers with darker green stripes cascade over and cover all sides of the hanging baskets. And the fragrance is amazing! The whole growing area becomes infused with it.  Very rare and not to be missed!

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. tigrinum 'Very Wide Petals' x Ctsm. Mem. Raúl Mortera Penedo 'SVO')

Over the last few years I have become intrigued by the breeding potential of tigrinum.  This showy species bears impressive cascades of 20-25 white flowers spotted in light pink and can bloom several times a year.  Mem. Raúl Mortera Penedo (Karen Armstrong x denticulatum) resembles a large and fuller super denticulatum.  This cross has all the potential to produce flowers that will be reminiscent of a “super improved” Ctsm. Ctsm. Dentigrianum (Ctsm. denticulatum 'Dark Spots' x Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO')

Every once in a while, a cross is so impressive that you want to re-make it as soon as possible.  There’s one challenge when breeding Catasetums with sexually dimorphic flowers: you need both male and female flowers to make a cross!  I waited patiently for two years to get female flowers of denticulatum 'Dark Spots,' and I saved pollen from my best tigrinum for just this occasion.  These will have spectacular flowers on miniature plants that bloom 2-3 times a season. Take a look at these   PICTURE, PICTURE, PICTURE  Really excellent and highly recommended!

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'Way Good' x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs 'Burgundy Chips' FCC/AOS)

This cross makes a compact Catasetum, combining a standard sized plant and a mini-Catasetum. This type of breeding is designed to produce large flowers while keeping reduced plant size. Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) 'Way Good' has great flower color, and the big yellow spot in the center of the lip is especially eye-catching. Ctsm. Susan Fuchs (Orchidglade x expansum) is a well-known hybrid, and the cultivar 'Burgundy Chips,' with its large yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting is a proven breeder, with many successful hybrids to its credit.   From this mating we expect full-shaped, colorful flowers in yellow and burgundy.  Plants will be quite floriferous, with mature plants blooming two or three times a year. This cross is producing excellent results, check out this picture, Very impressive first bloom! And here is a second to bloom picture

Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (Ctsm. Portagee Star 'Brian Lawsons Sunrise' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. denticulatum 'Wide Petals'

I have wanted to do an exact re-make of this mini-Catasetum for quite a while, but it can be a challenge to get female flowers!  In 2018, we finally had a number of plants produce female flowers, and an exact remake of the original was accomplished. It's always fun to go back and see how you thought the cross would turn out. This is also a rare opportunity to evaluate the results from a reciprocal Catasetum cross, which is available as SVO 8101.

Clo. NEW HYBRID (Clo. Jem's Speckled Russ 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Dark Odyssey 'Midnight')

Clowesetum crosses are known for their flower longevity and high flower count. JEM's Speckled Russ (Cl. russelliana x Ctsm. denticulatum) is one of the few hybrids made with a summer-blooming Clowesia and the small-growing species Ctsm. denticulatum. When awarded, ‘SVO’ produced three pendulous, foxtail-like inflorescences carrying 126 white flowers peppered with maroon spots. I expect that crossing this amazing Clowesetum with Dark Odyssey (Karen Armstrong x Darkness) and its large, perfectly-formed deep burgundy flowers will improve flower shape by flattening the petals and broadening the lips. blooms will be boldly spotted or blotched burgundy, and flower longevity of 4-5 weeks is expected.

Portagee Star (Ctsm. expansum x Ctsm. Black Knight) 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' has long played an important role as a breeder. This high-quality parent carries up to 15 flowers in shades of yellow with a touch of burgundy, a very attractive combination. Dark Odyssey (Karen Armstrong x Darkness) 'SVO Yellow Odyssey' is just outstanding, with a flat flower and perfectly-shaped lip in yellow with red spotting! Here we are expecting big yellow flowers spotted in red with outstanding form and presentation.  Excellent award potential!

Cyc. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Maren Gleason 'SVO' x Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

Modern Cycnoches hybrids are simply outstanding, with impressive flowers and a robust growth habit. Here we are breeding for spots. Maren Gleason (warscewiczii x Martha Clarke) has flowers peppered in burgundy on an almost orange background. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) has been proving itself as an important breeder. The awarded 'SVO II' has dark burgundy spots over a green base color. Both parents have the dominant shield-shaped lips from the warscewiczii in their linage. This cross will have spots, spots and more spots in burgundy over a lighter-colored background. You will be impressed with the flower shape, ease of growth and ability to carry 14-16 impressive swan-shaped flowers per stem. Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'SVO Sunshine' x Ctsm. Daniela Isabel 'Yellow Lip & Freckles')

Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) ‘SVO Sunshine’ has attractive flowers with a yellow lip and is quite floriferous, with mature plants blooming two to three times a year. Daniela Isabel (Portagee Star x Karen Armstrong) has produced several awarded plants. This cross is noted for its flower color and free-flowering habit. Ctsm. Portagee Star is an ancestor on both sides, and we expect it to contribute favorably to this grex, contributing color and large flat flower shape. The remainder is predominantly denticulatum, which will keep plant size small and add burgundy spotting to the flowers. This a very interesting combination, which will produce beautiful flowers from small-growing plants.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'SVO Sunshine' x Ctsm. Double Down 'XDPYL')

Pure yellow lips have been a long-time breeding objective at SVO. Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) 'SVO Sunshine' has very attractive flowers with yellow lips that are produced two to three times a year on mature plants. Double Down (Chuck Taylor x kleberianum) 'XDPYL' is an exceptional cultivar. Flowers are highlighted by a solid bright yellow lip and contrasting dark petals and sepals, thus the name Xtra Dark Petals Yellow Lip.  We are confident that this grex will produce flowers with solid pure yellow lips and contrasting petals and sepals. Very cool looking flowers.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Snow White' x Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO')

Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) 'Snow White’ is truly amazing, with nearly pure white flowers that are perfectly arranged. When combined with tigrinum’s long inflorescences of white flowers, will this cross deliver what we want: pure white flowers? Of course, wanting and getting are two different things. I expect about 50% will be white, with the rest spotted in burgundy. All will be easy to grow and bloom, and these mini-Catasetums will flower several times a season as mature plants. This is a good one!

Dark deep burgundy flowers are a favorite around here. Melana Davison (Penang x denticulatum) 'Foxtail' has nearly solid red flowers that are perfectly organized in a tight foxtail-like arrangement. Dark Odyssey (Karen Armstrong x Darkness) 'BDL' (short for 'Big Dark Lip') has an almost black lip. Here we are looking for dark red/burgundy colors framing a darker burgundy lip. Some plants will have a little yellow in the flowers as well.  The robust plants are growing nicely and will be easy to bloom.

Clo. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Fong Cing 'Lonely Heart' x Clo. Upper Echelon 'Select')

The grex Fong Cing (José Abalo x Orchidglade) has been outstanding, with surprisingly large and well-shaped flowers produced, 15 or more on strong upright inflorescences. Upper Echelon (Clowesetum Jumbo Lace x Catasetum Orchidglade) is spectacular, with its full shape, bright yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting. Add to that a flower longevity of 4-5 weeks and you have a great hybrid. What do we predict for this grex?  This is a Clowesetum (Catasetum x Clowesia), so long flower life is expected. Plants will be standard-sized, and flower stems will be upright-arching, carrying 15 or more large yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting. Outstanding!

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Fong Cing 'Lonely Heart' x Ctsm. Richard Fulford SVO'

The grex Fong Cing (José Abalo x Orchidglade) has been outstanding, with surprisingly large and well-shaped flowers produced 15 or more on strong upright inflorescences.  Richard Fulford (Orchidglade x lucis) is a new breeding direction, capitalizing on the attributes of the rare species Ctsm. lucis.  Ctsm. lucis is a large plant that produces 15-20 green and white flowers held high above the foliage on sturdy, three-foot upright inflorescences. The flowers produced by Richard Fulford have exceeded expectations, as evidenced by the four AM/AOS awards to date. Don’t take my word for it - take a look at ‘SVO’ with its outstanding flower color, size, and stem. This is the first cross in the next generation of lucis breeding. We want to develop large plants with straight upright inflorescences holding large brightly-colored flowers, and we believe this cross will deliver!  Enough said.

Every once in a while, a cross is so impressive that you want to re-make it as soon as possible. So I made it twice using different denticulatums. 'Wide Petals' is aptly named, with the widest petals I have seen in a denticulatum flower. With saved pollen from my best tigrinum, the cross was re-made. Morm. NEW HYBRID(Morm. Gareth Wills 'Tiger Spots' x Morm. Aftermath 'Neon Blaster')

Okay, we all know about Mormodes, but how many have you grown lately? We have been diligently working on developing advanced Mormodes crosses, and they are now coming of age. The flower colors are without compare, and the ease of culture now rivals most Catasetums. Morm. Gareth Wills (Exotic Treat x Nitty-Gritty) has bright yellow flowers with bold dark red spots, and plants produce 2-3 inflorescences on leafless bulbs. Morm. Aftermath (Mark Mills x Midnight Hooker) was a breakthrough in flower color. Just take a look at this picture of 'Neon Blaster'. I hadn't seen color like this before. Here we are looking for intense yellow/orange color with bold red spotting on 2-3 upright inflorescences produced from leafless plants.

I really like Gareth Wills (Mormodes Exotic Treat x Mormodes Nitty-Gritty) and its bright yellow flowers with bold dark red spots. The as-yet unnamed Mormodes hybrid (Virgen de Valle x Nitty Gritty) 'Peppermint Stripes' really has unusual flowers, with pink lips and striped petals and sepals.  Here we are expecting the combination of these two very distinctive flower colors to give us a crazy new set of never-before-seen colors.

Cyc. NEW HYBRID (Cyc. Richard Brandon 'Very Select' x Cyc. Pineapple Popcorn 'Gold Spots')

Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) has proven itself to be an important parent, and 'Very Select' has exceptionally wide, flat segments. The flower color is an unusual shade of amber with a few burgundy spots. Pineapple Popcorn (Kevin Clarke x warscewiczii) has almost perfectly flat flowers in yellow with gold spots. The flatter the Cycnoches flowers, the more they resemble the swans they're named for. These parents are exceptional in this regard, and we expect the cross to deliver some of the flattest Cycnoches flowers yet. The flower color of the offspring will span a range that includes amber, bronze, and green.

'OMG Giant' has the largest flower with the widest petals and can carry 7 flowers per inflorescence. I cannot imagine a better pairing. These are perfect for the discriminating collector who wants the very best examples of this amazing species.

This species flowers in early winter on deciduous leafless bulbs that produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences carrying 15 or more soft pink flowers with cute frilly lips. This Brazilian species is not often available in the USA. All my original plants were imported, and interestingly they flowered in a wide range of colors, including red, amber, yellow, green and white. The color variety is quite amazing! Ctsm. spitzii is one of the last Catasetum species of the year to flower, and it does so with an impressive display. The arching inflorescences are very sturdy, carrying many well-displayed flowers.  The selected cultivar 'Red' has red flowers and is very floriferous. As I write this, it's in full bloom with 48 flowers on a single inflorescence!

Cyc. Cryminy (Richard Brandon x Cyc. Kevin Clarke) 'Killer' has color never before seen in a Cycnoches. The reciprocal cross is available as SVO 7691, providing a rare opportunity to see how capsule and pollen parents differ in their contribution to the offspring.

There is Catasetum royalty in the ancestry of this cross. Ctsm. John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is a spectacular hybrid! The huge, flat, nearly black lip of the cultivar 'Ursa Major' really impressed the judges when this plant received a First Class Certificate for Ryan Kowalczyk. 'Ursa Major' blooms 2-3 times a year and often produces female flowers on its first flowering of the season, making it a frequent capsule parent. Susan Fuchs has a stellar reputation as well. It is an excellent plant with large bright yellow flowers boldly spotted with burgundy and a habit of blooming multiple times a year. This is an outrageously nice pairing: huge flowers, huge lips, and bright colors on plants that bloom several times a year. A real must-have!

The flowers are large and well-presented on 3-4 upright inflorescences, and it's the first Mormodes to bloom in our collection each season. Morm. andreettae has an unusual coral pink flower color, and the long upright inflorescences do a great job displaying the 12-16 well-arranged flowers. This Mormodes is named in honor of Father Angel Andreetta, a missionary and well-known orchid collector. The expectation here is to develop longer upright inflorescences with flowers in a range of intense colors. It will be very interesting to see how the coral-pink flower colors mix with the bright yellow red spotted flowers of andreettae. This cross will lead to never-before-seen flower color combinations.

Mimi (lawrenceana x ignea) is very floriferous, blooming with 2-3 upright inflorescences per bulb, each carrying 12-15 flowers in beautiful orange tones covered in fine burgundy spots. This cultivar also has very wide petals that give the blooms a fullness not often seen in Mormodes. These will flower late in the year with cascades of 12-15 flowers in shades of orange to pink. Morm. tapoayensis has a dark purple flower with darker spots in deep burgundy - the color is really unusual.  Mormodes are dominant for flower color, and we expect the flowers of the offspring to be darkly pigmented with some darker spotting. Plants with multiple pendulous inflorescences carrying 12-16 flowers each. This is a remake of a highly successful cross. The first time these were produced, Barnabas Collins 'SVO Dark Night' received a First Class Certificate.  When awarded, the plant carried 117 flowers and buds on 7 inflorescences, all from a single pseudobulb!!!  Here is a first bloom PICTURE of Barnabas Collins.

Grace Dunn (warczewitzii x rosea) 'Live Oak' produces 15 or more pink and green fragrant flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid-winter. Cl. rosea 'Fantastic Andy' is truly an outstanding cultivar, exhibiting the best quality flowers I have seen on this species. It blooms profusely in early winter on deciduous blubs with 3-4 pendulous inflorescences carrying 15 or more soft pink flowers with frilly lips. Clo. Jumbo York (Cl. Rebecca Northen 'Grapefruit Pink' x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'JTM')

Cl. Rebecca Northen (Grace Dunn x rosea) is a well-recognized plant and good for breeding. It is easy to grow and has beautiful, frilly pink flowers with a marvelous citrus fragrance on multiple pendent inflorescences. The flowers of Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) 'JTM' (short for 'Jamie's Tortured Midnight') are amazing, with huge lips in dark burgundy, and the plant is free-flowering, blooming 2-3 times a year. This cross makes a Clowesetum, which will lead to excellent flower longevity. The dark color of 'JTM' will produce rose/red flower colors in the offspring, and both parents will contribute their excellent well-formed and well-rounded flower shapes. All in all, this is a great pairing.

Ctsm. NEW HYBRID (Ctsm. Irma Scott 'Long Lived Flower' x Ctsm. Dark Odyssey 'BDL')

The flowers of Irma Scott (Louise Clarke x denticulatum) have an unusual and highly desirable characteristic for a Catasetum: they are long-lived, lasting up to 3 weeks. Dark Odyssey (Karen Armstrong x Darkness) ‘BDL’ ('Big Dark Lip') has an almost black lip. Here we are looking for improved flower longevity, with dark red/burgundy flowers spotted in darker burgundy, all on a mini-Catasetum plant that flowers 2-3 times a season. Here are the first three to bloom: Picture 1   Picture 2   Picture 3

Ctsm. spitzii (Ctsm. spitzii 'Yellow Sunlight' x Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Solid Gold' FCC/AOS)

This Brazilian species is not often available for sale in the USA, and the quality of this yellow color form is about as good as it gets.

(Cyc. warscewiczii 'Leo' AM/AOS x Cycd. Freckled Sweetheart 'Samantha' AM/AOS)

This cross was made by our friend Jordan Hawley, the parents of this cross are two of his awarded plants. It is a paring we have tried over the years with no success. When he mentioned the flasks, it was a no brainer to get them!  These will be yellow to orange flowers spotted with burgundy spots a lot like this cross PICTURE Cycd. Troublemaker (Cycd. Spotted Hornet x Cyc. warscewiczii)
