NEW

L. milleri ‘Dr. Koopowitz Red’ HCC/AOS x L. angereri ‘Peter

Rupicolous Laelia species get a bad rap for being difficult to grow, and I do agree it is hard to duplicate the natural environment for these.  However, the primary hybrids (crosses between two species) grow much better than their species counterparts while maintaining much of the original charm.  These will have long stems of 10-15 bright red flowers. Limited

SVO 2361

Hybrids with L. anceps in the background are becoming quite popular.  Here is a new direction; we have used a color recessive white anceps with a full shaped bright yellow and red flare with a good strong stem.  Could this produce L anceps like yellow and red flowers?   I think some will be, the best will be remarkable.

C. Landate (C. leopoldii ‘Dark Blood’ x C. aclandiae ‘Kathleen III’ AM/AOS)

I really like the bifoliate cattleyas as they are summer blooming, fragrant, and really showy. The leopoldii has incredible dark red-burgundy flowers with darker spotting; the aclandiae is one of the best awarded, with huge flowers and a large flat fuchsia-red lip.  The influence of aclandiae will reduce plant height to about 10” tall and produce 5-7 flowers per stem in dark red-burgundy with darker spotting.  A very nice primary bifoliate Cattleya hybrid.

SVO 4967

Lc. Krull’s Spotted Angel ‘SVO’ x C. Orchidom Brabant ‘Freckled Flamenco’ HCC/AOS

Krull’s Spotted Angel (Lc. Lulu x C. Mark Jones) is very showy light pink with darker amethyst spotted flowers. The Orchidom Brabant (C. Pink Brabant x C. The Caudebec (C. Sophia Martin x C. Penny Kuroda) is a cream colored flower with dark pink spots and carries 9 flowers per stem. ‘Marty’s Orchids’ is a mutation and is reported to be a tetraploid.  Orchidom Brabant (C. Pink Brabant x C. Brabantiae) is also pink with amethyst spots.  Flowers will be hot pink with darker amethyst spots and carried 8 or more per stem. SVO 5010

Blc. SunCoast Sunspots ‘SVO II’ AM/AOS x Blc. Sun Spots ‘Solid Spots’

Knock out yellow flowers with red spots and red lips will be the result of this cross.  This type of breeding helps homogenize the genes making for better breeding plants.  SunCoast Sunspots is one of the best new large flowered, high flower count yellows with red spots breeding and Sun Spots (C. Mark Jones x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots) excellent wide petals, yellow color and spots.   Yes, this was the year for spotted crosses!  Top of the line breeding in this type.

SVO 5026

Lc. Jungle Elf ‘Cheryl Lynn’ x C. Caudebec ‘Marty’s Orchids’

Jungle Elf started the yellow with red spot flower craze as before then there were no Cattleyas with that color combo. The addition of other spotted cattleyas with light petal and sepal color allowed the yellow of Jungle Elf to dominate.  I expect yellow flowers with red spots, similar to Blc. SunCoast Sunspots but with a higher flower count of 5-7 flowers per stem.

Cattleya Species

SVO 2336

C. luddemanniana v. coerulea ‘Paul’ AM/AOS x C. luddemanniana v. coerulea ‘Francisco’

Coerulea forms of C. luddemanniana are often quite expensive and hard to locate.  This paring will produce 100% blues and have excellent shape and color, good vigorous growers.

SVO 2449

C. intermedia v. aquinii, coerulea ‘Blue Splash’ x C. intermedia v. aquinii, coerulea ‘Blue Flair’

Good aquinii coerulea C. intermedia’s are hard to come by.  I have raised several populations and this is the best of the best.  Excellent dark coerulea color and flat petal presentation are expected.  Also a nice degree of hybrid vigor is evident with this paring. SVO 2421

C. Claesinter (C. intermedia v. aquinii, coerulea ‘Blue Splash’ x C. Claesiana v. coerulea ‘Haneda’)

Easy to flower compact blue flares.  This is the second time in making this cross as the first time produced a high average of quality blue flares.  This grex contains C. intermedia v. coerulea aquinii twice and C. loddigesii v. coerulea once. The flowers resemble the intermedia parent.  These plants grow really fast and flower at a young age.

SVO 2938

This grex contains the coerulea forms of C. walkeriana, C. intermedia and C. loddigesii. Fast growing and easy blooming compact sized blue cattleyas.  Some plants will have petals that have blue flares.

SVO 4949

C. Gaudii v. coerulea (C. loddigesii v. coerulea ‘Blue Sky’ AM/AOS x C. leopoldii v. coerulea ‘Kathleen’ JC/AOS)

In the past this grex was called C. Hybrida when C. leopoldii was considered C. guttata.   This will be the most desirable as they will be coerulea blue!  Bifoliate coerulea flowers are very rare and collectable with the most desirable having blue spots.  Mature plants will have heads of 10 or more blue flowers.  The first use of coerulea parents in this grex. Don’t miss out on these.

SVO 4962

SVO 5053

Lc. Tahoe Rose v. coerulea ‘SVO’ AM/AOS x C. loddigesii ‘Blue Sky’ AM/AOS

Tahoe Rose (L. purpurata x C. walkeriana) flowers with 3-4 blooms twice a year.  The lip is a dark slate blue and petals and sepals a light coerulea.  The loddigesii is still the best of the blue form with 5 dark coerulea flowers on a stem.  The expectation is for medium coerulea segments, dark slate blue lip with a contrasting yellow spot in the throat.
