Compact Cattleyas

Compact growing Cattleyas have gained considerable interest with hobbyist for some important reasons.

  • Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
  • They are space savings so with more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
  • Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
  • New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don’t require staking.
  • They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The proven breeding plants used in the development of compact Cattleyas are; Lc. Tokyo Magic, Blc. Love Sound, Pot. Rubescence, Lc. Mini Purple and Slc. Circle of Life. This parental stock will impart a strong growth habit and reliable blooming to their progeny.

The crosses listed below are the most modern breeding and will raise the bar for future hybrids. There are many outstanding hybrids here with great potential

The new crosses for 2014 represent the most modern breeding in this category.  These will raise the bar for floriferousness and plant habit.  Everyone needs to make space for these, the flower to plant size ratio  is amazing and many will flower twice a year.  There are many fine crosses listed and I have spent hours described the offspring as best as I can, so read on!

SVO 2340
L. milleri ‘Dr. Koopowitz Red’ HCC/AOS x L. angereri ‘Peter
Rupicolous Laelia species get a bad rap for being difficult to grow, and I do agree it is hard to duplicate the natural environment for these.  However, the primary hybrids (crosses between two species) grow much better than their species counterparts while maintaining much of the original charm.  These will have long stems of 10-15 bright red flowers. L. Gold Star ‘Dean’s Gold’ x L. Gold Star ‘SBOE’

Gold Star is (L. flava syn. crispata x L. harpophylla) and produces long lasting starry brilliant yellow- orange flowers on tall stems; mature plants are always show stoppers in March.  And being a primary rupicolous hybrid these are good growers.

SVO 2519
L. angereri ‘Peter’ x L. flava ‘SVO Select’
Rupicolous Laelia breeding is not often seen anymore.  The species have a reputation of being difficult to grow, but the primary hybrids are not that way; they are quite easy to grow and flower.  L. angereri has a high flower count with over 25 blooms of deep red-orange color, and L. flava with its larger bright yellow flower, will combine to make vivid orange-yellow flowers.  I expect flower count to be in the high teens on very compact plants.

But the primary hybrids have ‘hybrid vigor’ and are quite easy to grow and flower.  L. briegeri has a high flower count with over 12 blooms of deep yellow, and L. flava with the larger bright yellow flowers, will combine to make vivid bright true yellow flowers.  I expect flower count to be around 9-11 blooms on very compact plants.

C. Comets Tail (C. Landate 'SVO' 4n x C. aclandiae 'Kathleen III' AM/AOS 4n )

This is a tetraploid grex, rare in bifoliate breeding. Landate is (C. aclandiae x C. leopoldii). Expect large flower size with heavy substance. They should look like a super improved C. aclandiae with 3-4 flowers on a stem.  This is one of those “very cool” hybrids; even species nuts will appreciate this cross. These will make excellent basket or mounted plants.

“Intense red flowers of excellent shape” is the best description for this cross. AOS award potential is very high with this grex.  I am keeping 12 plants for myself!   Oconee has a long proven track record as a superior breeder with  Circle of Life may prove to be its equal.  The reciprocal is also available as SVO 5139.  Try both to see if the pod parent is influential in the offspring.   It you like large solid red flowers with darker red lips this is one to get.  First to bloom from the earlier cross

The Appleblossom has light yellow flowers with a touch of pink in the background, good strong stems the carry 6-9 blooms and make for a very showy flower display.  With this cross I am looking for high flower count on straight stems holding the blooms above the foliage in March.   Flowers will be in a range of pastel colors from soft pink to light cream with darker pink lips.  Mature plants will be show stoppers.

Lc. Tropical Song 'Calypso' x Lc. Hsinying Excell 'DG' HCC/AOS

Flared flowers are one of my favorite flower types.  Here we have paired two great ones.
The Tropical Song is a compact plant with strong stems holding 5-7 flowers in lavender and yellow.  The Hsinying Excell is a bit more compact in its plant habit with strong stems carrying 7-9 flowers in light lavender with dark flares.  Both parents have yellow in the center of the lip and it is expected that a good number of the progeny will have this yellow splashed on the petals. I will occasionally make reciprocal crosses to see if there is a difference in the flower and plant habit.  This is one where we are testing the idea.  Reciprocal is SVO 5088

Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'Las Brisas')

This is a remake of an excellent hybrid. The parent Mari's Song (Lc. Irene Finney x C. Cherry Chip) is a white with pink and purple splash petals carried on stems with 4-6 flowers. By pairing it with L. anceps, you can expect tall stems of full shaped lavender splashed petal flowers. This one is also temperature tolerant and can be grown outdoors in frost free climates.  I will occasionally make reciprocal crosses to see if there is a difference in the flower and plant habit.  This is one where we are testing the idea with reciprocal crosses SVO 5104. Waianae Leopard) has amazing yellow flowers with red veining and a red overlay, very unusual coloring. It also carries its flowers for 6 weeks in perfection!   With a double shot of Slc. Bright Angel, red colors will predominate, flowers will be flared and even a few will be spotted.  A very interesting hybrid with huge potential.

Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is my wife's name sake and Tokyo Life (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Circle of Life) is a similar hybrid; both crosses bloomed with a high average of quality most likely due to the influence of the Circle of Life.  This pairing will produce full formed flowers in sunset shades with red flares.  The inflorescences will hold the 4-6 flowers above the foliage on stems that don't need staking.  I also made a reciprocal cross SVO 5097.   Excellent compact plants to bloom easily in 4” pots

Bright Angel x C. Little Dipper) is a good grower and reliable 2x a year bloomer.  This combination will produce about 50/50 solid color and splashed flowers. I can hardly wait to see these flower.  You need to get some of this cross.  Here is the first plant to bloom, Second plant to Flower

C. J.A. Carbone 'Mother's Delight' x Soph. coccinea 'SVO' AM/AOS

J.A. Carbone is the parent of many famous hybrids like: Lc. Irene Finney, C. Irene Holquin, Lc. Susan Holquin, and Lc. Casitas Spring collectively these have over 70 AOS awards!  'Mother's Delight' has wide petals undoubtedly derived from the C. trianaei in its breeding.  The coccinea is a fine cultivar receiving its AM last year.   This breeding is similar to the very successful hybrid from Frank Fordyce, Slc. Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea).  I am expecting rose-pink to red flowers with wide petals on compact plants.

Here is a great plant that will do as well outdoors in Coastal California as it does in Florida.  Rojo (L. milleri x C. aurantiaca) is a true red flower produced in clusters of 7-9 on a good stem.  The schultzei is a large growing plant with 6' spikes and a cluster of 10-15 deep red flowers and a purple lip with undulated petals and sepals.  These are expected to be waxy red flowers in clusters at the end of a 2' stem.  Very cool.

Bright Angel x C. Little Dipper) has flowers with nice flares, and is a good grower and reliable 2x a year bloomer.  These are going to flower on little plants. I can already see the beginnings of flower buds on the plants in 3” pots.  I expect Broughtonia-shaped flowers with flares in lavender shades.  A really cute flower.First Bloom

Most all flowers come out flared with the excellent shape imparted by the Beaufort.  Highly desirable (at least by me…)

By pairing it with L. albida, you can expect tall stems of full shaped, lavender splashed petal flowers.  Similar to Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song x L. anceps) I think the L. albida will reduce the plant size and add its charm to the flowers.  This one is also temperature tolerant and can be grown outdoors in frost free climates.

(Epi. Pacific Eclipse x Epi. Pacific Canary) 'SVO Yellow Sun' x Epi. magnoliae 'SVO'

'SVO Yellow Sun' blooms with a beautiful large cluster of bright, pure yellow flowers selected from the breeding of Cal Orchid.  Epi. magnoliae (conopseum) is widely distributed from Florida   Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and in to Louisiana as well as in parts of Mexico.  It is the Northern most growing epiphytic orchid in the USA.   This is also a cold hardy plant, as costal North Carolina can get pretty cold in winter.   This cross will be very easy to grow and flower with clusters of bright yellow blooms on plants staying under 12”.  These will also not produce many kiki's, keeping the plant nice and neat.   The plants are expected to be cold tolerant and should do well outside in most coastal areas that don't experience freezing.  Some plants are developing flowers in 3” pots.  This is a new style of Epi. breeding.

Mini-Catts

The mini-cats are plants that will stay under 6” tall and bloom in a 3”-4” pot. It is not uncommon for mini-cats to bloom twice a year. Mini-cats are making a comeback, the modern breeding has developed surprisingly nice improvements where the plants are heat tolerant, produce large flowers, have brilliant colors and superb flower shape. Some of the excellent parents being used are: Pot. Rubescence, Sc. Beaufort, Slc. Tangerine Jewel, Sl. Minipet, and Slc. Pink Doll. There is always space for more of these in every collection.

This 2014 list is the “best ever” Mini-Catt offering.  The quality of the plants and the large flower sizes produced from 4” tall plants is just astounding.   Take an extra long look at this list! These will set a new standard.

Coerulea (blue) Cattleyas

In Cattleyas the ‘coerulea’ color or ‘blue’ as it is referred to is very intriguing and rare in nature. In the early years of blue breeding there were not many known species in this coerulea color, so breeding was limited to a few possibilities. Almost always the crosses were slow to mature and produced large plants due to the influence of the known blue species at the time. Today, we have many species and hybrids to breed with, and the quality of blue flowers has been improving rapidly. Plant habit and speed to bloom have also been addressed; we now have compact plants blooming in 4” pots

For 2014 this offering is focused on producing a compact plant size with a large 4-6” flower size.  Yes, some will be 6” flower size! I am also working with the bloom period; expect most of the crosses to flower in February, March and into April.  Having coerulea flowers at the height of the show season is always a nice contrast for an exhibit.

I have had this plant for many years and after a bit of study I realized that this might be a plant with real potential.  Suzanne Hye is in the background of C. Bow Bells, one of the most famous white Cattleyas.   Sierra Skies {(C. bowringiana x L. pumila) x C. mossiae} is a great grower, flowers 2 or 3 times a year and has a pleasing blue flower and nice lip.  I am expecting to see larger than average flowers in light blue with darker lips; these plants will mature at about 12” tall.

Valentine, C. Sea Breeze, C. Dupreana, C. Exima, and C. Purity.  I expect with the help of the C. warneri 'do Suzuki' that this grex will produce large flower size and full lips, a standard Cattleya flower look and be under 10” tall.  So here we expect big Blc. type blooms on compact plants in coerulea!

Large / Standard Cattleyas

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

This 2014 season the Standard Cattleya offering is focused on plants that produce big clusters of flowers held high above the foliage. This ‘Pompom’ type flower presentation makes for spectacular exhibition plants.  Big heads of blooms in your display can really add some of that ‘snob factor’ (we all like it when our plants are the best in the show.)   If you have the room for these they are well worth growing.

C. Mareeba Tiger (C. leopoldii 'Paul' AM/AOS x C. schilleriana 'SVO' AM/AOS)

I have wanted to make this cross for years, now I have the best possible parental stock and here it is.  Most of us have seen C. Landate (C. leopoldii x C. aclandiae) and C. Mareeba Tiger combines the high flower count of 15-25 blooms for the C. leopoldii with the 5-7 blooms of C. schilleriana.  This is a grex that I believe will bloom with 9-15 flowers or possibly more.  The blooms will be a dark chestnut brown with darker spotting, a broad intense magenta lip and be fragrant.  Like a super high flowered schilleriana!  To the best of my knowledge this grex has not been widely offered, here is your chance to get something great.

I am always impressed at the spring shows when I see tall plants with big pompoms (clusters) of flowers.  I have often thought of what breeding combinations would give the best results.  I have liked Golden Wax (C. Chocolate Drop x Slc. Kauai Starbright) a tall plant with big clusters of 15 plus, waxy, solid yellow flowers. The Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is a cluster of 8  vibrant orange yellow flowers held high on a the stem.  This pairing will produce intense colored flowers in yellow and orange-yellow on tall stately plants.  Very showy…….

Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x self

Every year I use this plant in a display and every year 5 or 6 people ask to purchase it….but it is my stock plant and I can't really sell it, as it is a good breeder and show plant.  Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) produces long inflorescences carrying 7-9 red flowers with a darker red lip, very showy.  I don't often self plants, but in this case I need to share. These are robust growers that tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions and will mature at 14-16” tall.

I am really interested in orange flowers and I think this cross will produce intense orange colors.  Guess What (Lc. Trick or Treat x Blc. Waikiki Gold) has an intense almost glowing orange-gold flower color, with the 7-9 flowers displayed well above the foliage on a strong inflorescence. The Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell) is a true orange flower that produces 7-9 blooms on a long stem.  Similar cross to SVO 5125

I have mentioned my fascination with orange flowers and you can see that with the other orange hybrids listed.  This one is really taking a different path.  Carolina Orange D'or is at the top of the list of oranges with excellent shape and color.  The Schroder's Love is a soft pink with light lavender lip, large flowers and good shape.  It also has a strong self supporting stem with well spaced blooms.  So why cross a soft pink with an orange…. I believe the orange will dominate:  if the flowers space out along the stem and size is improved this will be an,amazing hybrid.

These will be large compact plants, which means tight internode spacing between pseudobulbs and mature growths 14-16” tall.  The flowers will be held on strong stems in shades of yellow with dark red lips; this is a very showy combination of colors.

Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x C. Grandee) is extremely rare in cultivation today, but its ability as a breeder has not diminished, producing hybrids like Lc. Maui Plum, C. Allen Condo and Lc. Sagarik Wax to name a few.   Summerland Girl produces 9-13 waxy red-bronze flowers with a darker red lip on a strong upright stem.  The Ruby Wax (Slc. Mahogany Drop x Slc. Golden Wax) has as the name implies, ruby-red waxy flowers with 21 blooms per stem!!!  This is going to be a tall plant maturing at 20” to 24”.  The flower display will be spectacular; I am expecting 15 or more large waxy red flowers held well above the foliage, a very impressive sight and a sure 'knock out' when exhibited.

Cattleya Species

Collecting select and awarded Cattleya species has been a passion of mine for many years. The collection is now over 700 plants! Recently, I started breeding the “best of the best” in an effort to have these choice and often hard to find Cattleya species available for the hobbyist. Here are some of the first things to come from the lab with many more to follow in coming years.

The 2014 list should be of interesting to all species collectors. The L. anceps are some of the best around and this is a deep offering of many fine crosses.  I am working towards having plants produce 5 and 6 flowers per stem, which is a very high flower count for L. anceps!   Also check out the C. leopoldii (tigrina) crosses.  It has taken a long time before these crosses could be made; I wanted the best plants with high flower count and best flower quality before making them.  Don’t miss these as this quality is hard to come by.  When was the last time you have seen L. alaorii for sale, or C. schilleriana and what about well priced C. violacea v. flamea?   I hope you enjoy the species list.

Spotted Cattleyas

Spotted flowers have been a favorite of mine for years. Seeing those wonderful spots in the heat of summer is a spectacular sight. Today the development of spotted breeding include flowers that bloom in colors ranging from cream, yellow, pink, orange, green, and bronze. They can be speckled, spotted and blotched. The use of C. Mark Jones has improved petal width and size. While the hybrids with Lc. Jungle Elf, Slc. Jungle Gem and Blc. SunCoast Sun Spots will add their yellow color to the flowers.

For this is the year we have made an extra effort towards hybrids with yellow flowers and red spots.  These are really a nice accomplishment for Cattleyas as this color combination is not s easy as it looks. These new spotted hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems, and have compact plant habit to bloom in 4”-5” pots.

2014 is the year we have made an extra effort towards spotted hybrids. They are a  “new look” in Cattleya breeding and I think that yellow flowers with red spots are the best (I may be biased a bit!)

Here is a novelty L. anceps. About 50% of these will bloom with flared color in the petals like the v. roeblingiana 'La Jolla.'  I expect an overall improved flower form, higher flower count and the most desirable will have wide petals with flares.   A very different style of anceps breeding.

L. alaorii 'SVO' HCC/AOS x L. alaorii 'SVO II'

What a great mini-catt species! L. alaorii plants stand less than 2.5” tall, bloom 2-3 times a year and have the cutest light pink flowers.  Originally described in 1967 but then lost to cultivation to be rediscovered in 1989, it is quite unusual to have such a desirable species just appear 24 years ago.  It is still hard to find in collections.  If you love Cattleya species you must make room for one or two.  These are best grown mounted or in a small basket. C. leopoldii 'Dark Select #1' x C. leopoldii 'Paul' AM/AOS

'Dark Select #1' is from a selfing of 'Dark Prince' and looks to be superior in color, size and flower count.  'Paul' is a beautifully flat dark chestnut flower with a commanding presence. This is an exceptionally fine pairing of two superior plants. Breeding Cattleya species that are slow to mature requires that only the best parental stock be used.  These will be a significant improvement in the quality of C. leopoldii's.

C. warneri v alba 'Claire' AM/AOS x self

Good C. warneri v. alba's are hard to come by. 'Claire' was the largest of all the awarded plants with flowers just over 7” in natural spread; that's larger than the all other color forms and is quite impressive!  These seedlings are showing good vigor and are growing well.

L. anceps 'Ultimo' x L. anceps 'Rustic Royalty' HCC/AOS

'Ultimo' is from the 'Mendenhall' breeding, characterized by its large lip and wide petals.  'Rustic Royalty' has some L. anceps v. guerrero in its breeding adding a little flaring to the petals and darkening the lip to a deep crimson-purple.   These two different styles in anceps breeding come them together to give a range of outcomes with the best having the darker, larger lip and wider petals with a light flaring.  Also 4-5 flowers per stem will be common.

L. anceps v. roeblingiana 'La Jolla' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'Disciplinata' HCC/AOS

So here we have combined the flared roeblingiana form with the flecked 'Discplinata' form.  I am hoping for flares and flecked flowers… How cool will that be?   Better get several plants to be sure you get a good one.

L. anceps 'White Wonder' x L. anceps 'Marble Queen'

Here is an awesome polyploid hybrid that will have flowers of heavy substance and be pure white with purple veins in the throat.  If you don't have this color form, this is the best there is.

L. anceps 'SVO' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'La Reina' HCC/AOS

This is a superb cross. 'SVO' has a smooth dark lavender flower color and blooms with 5-6 flowers.  'La Reina' has very dark purple flowers and a reliable 4-5 flower count.  So how do you improve on the polyploid forms? The answer is by adding flower count. Most modern anceps only have 3-4 flowers.  This cross will have 5 to 6 flowers and have excellent flower quality!

This cross is made with exceptional parents.  Both are from the 'Mendenhall' breeding.  'Gypsy Sky' has a large natural spread and blooms with 4-5 flowers.  'Ultimo' is characterized by its large lip and wide petals and 4 flowers.  The expectation is for larger flower size and big lips with flower counts of 4-5.    Very Limited
