Mini-Catts

The mini-cats are plants that will stay under 5” tall and bloom in a 3-4” pot. It is not uncommon for mini-cats to bloom twice a year. Mini-cats, although not as popular as they were in the 80’s and 90’s, still command attention and are making a come back. The modern breeding has developed plants that are heat tolerant, produce larger flowers, brilliant colors and superb shape. Some of the excellent parents being used are: Sc. Beaufort, Slc. Tangerine Jewel, Sl. Minipet, and Lc. Mini Purple. There is always space for one or two more of these brightly colored mini-cats in every collection.

SVO 1348

Slc. Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot ‘Orange Circle’ HCC/AOS x Soph. coccinea ‘Full Circle’ 4n)

This is a re-make of an important mini-cat breeder using my best, line bred, and warmth tolerant 4n coccinea. Slc. California Apricot has produced many fine hybrids and Slc. Seagulls Apricot is no exception. This re-make will flower in a wider range of temperature conditions. These bloom with striking, bright orange-red flowers in a 3” pot. This crossed should be in your collection. 3” pots.

SVO 1521

Sl. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii 'Yellow Imp’ x Soph. coccinea v. aurea 'Tomiyama' CHM/AOS)

The picture is a red Minipet. This cross of Minipet is a first using yellow parents, Sl. Orpetii ‘Yellow Imp and Soph. coccinea ‘Tomiyama’. The regular Minipets have flat & full form and are good breeders. Not sue if we will get yellows but if we do they will be very collectable. A true mini-cat. 3” pots.

SVO 1524

(L. pumila 'SVO’ HCC/AOS x Sl. Minipet 'SVO')

This L. pumila has very dark purple flower color and good shape. The Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) has deep cerise red flowers with wide petals and flat form. The expectation is for true mini-cats with flat & full, dark red-purple flowers. 3” pots .

SVO 1529

Slc. Million Kiss (L. pumila ‘SVO’ HCC/AOS x Sc. Beaufort ‘Luna Rousse’)

I first saw these cute flowers in Japan and was so impressed I made the cross. These flower in a 3” pot, have flat, shapely flowers measuring up to 3” across. The flowers are a rose-lavender with a dark purple lip color. This is a nice mini-cat. Limited 3” pots. First to flower from the cross 1247 and 1427.

SVO 1530

(Slc. Bright Angel 'Mark's Red' HCC/AOS x Sl. Minipet 'SVO')

Bright Angel (Slc. Precious Stones x Soph. coccinea) is a true red flower and a proven breeder with many successful hybrids to its credit. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) has deep cerise red color with wide petals and flat form it is also a good breeder. It’s hard to imagine a better pairing, flat & full shape, solid deep red flowers, on mini plants. 3” pots.

SVO 1544

Slc. Mini Apricot (Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS x Sl. Minipet 'SVO')

California Apricot has lent its fine shape and color to famous hybrids such as; Slc. Hazel Boyd, Slc. Seagulls Apricot, and Slc. Final Touch. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) has deep cerise red flowers with wide, flat petals that it is also proven a good breeder. Flowers well rounded and a solid cerise-red color. A nice Mini-cat 3” pots.

SVO 1591

(Lc. Sacramento Rose 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Sl. Minipet 'SVO' ) Picture of first to bloom.

Sacramento Rose (Lc. Mini Purple x L. alaorii) a charming, purple flower with dark purple lips. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) has deep cerise red flowers with wide, flat petals. We are looking for shapely, dark purple-red flowers on small, mini plants that will stay under 4” tall. A mini-cat 3” pots .

SVO 1610

(Slc. Tangerine Jewel 'Magnifique' 4n x Lc. Sacramento Rose 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

These will be mini-cats staying under 4” tall. Tangerine Jewel (Slc. Little Beamche x Soph. coccinea) ‘Magnifique’ is a tetraploid mutation of ‘Vi’ HCC/AOS and has fathered many fine hybrids. It has good shape, bright orange-red color and is free flowering. Sacramento Rose (Lc. Mini Purple x L. alaorii) a charming, purple flower, it blooms twice a year. Expect well shaped intense purple-red blooms. A mini-cat 3” pots .

SVO 1629

Slc. Seagulls Mini-Cat Heaven (Slc. Tangerine Jewel 'Magnifique' 4nx Sc. Beaufort '4n')

This is a re-make of Slc. Seagulls Mini-Cat Heaven; the original grex took 10 AOS awards. Here we are using superior parents with Tangerine Jewel (Slc. Little Beamche x Soph. coccinea) ‘Magnifique’ a tetraploid mutation of ‘Vi’ HCC/AOS with brilliant red color. The Beaufort is a tetraploid mutation of ‘Elmwood’ and the 4n’s are well known for their breeding traits. These will be deep tangerine-orange flowers of excellent shape and form. Very choice, not to be missed. A mini-cat. Limited 3” pots.

SVO 1683

(Pot. Rubescence 'Little Brother' x Sl. Minipet 'SVO')

This cross has produced excellent solid dark red flowers on mini-cat plants. Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot) is a dark red-burgundy flower with an extremely dark red burgundy lip. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) is a mini-cat. It has deep cerise red flowers with wide petals and flat form. I flowered several from an earlier batch and they were excellent. Very nice, not to be missed. A mini-cat 3” pots .

SVO 1684

(Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO Solid Red' x Lc. Culminant 'La Tuilerie' AM/AOS)

The expectation is for Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) a dark solid red flower high in the influence from Soph. coccinea and a small bit of purple from L. pumila will breed great results. I believe Slc. Jillian Lee will allow the Lc. Culminant ‘La Tuilerie’ to add its influence for wide petal width, and if it does we should have excellent flower shapes in darker red purple colors. 3” pots .

SVO 1760

(Lc. Aloha Case 'Hawaiian Style' x L. alaorii 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

This cross was inspired by a similar hybrid Lc. Sacramento Rose (Lc. Mini Purple x L. alaorii) It produced a high average of quality. By using Lc. Aloha Case (Lc. Mini Purple x C. walkeriana), I am expecting rounder flowers with dark purple blooms and darker lips. This is an easy growing mini-cat. 3” pots .

PL 035

(Sl. Minipet ‘Ruby Jewel’ x Soph. wittigiana ‘Pink Opal’ AM/AOS)

Here is a Mini-cat offering bred by Peter T. Lin. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) has deep, cerise red flowers with wide petals and flat form on a plant 4” tall, the Soph. wittigiana is an outstanding pink cultivar, with excellent petal shape and this species is not often seen in cultivation. Here we are looking for plants under 3” tall, flat flowers with round petals reminiscent of S. wittigiana. Color will range from rose-red to rose-pink. This is a true mini-cat and one of the first crosses with Soph. wittigiana. 3” pots.

PL 042

Slc. Richard Stone (Slc. Circle of Life ‘Heart’s Desire’ AM/AOS x Soph. coccinea ‘Brilliant Jewel’ HCC/AOS)

This is another cross from Peter T. Lin. Here he remade Slc. Richard Stone using one of his best Soph. coccinea. These flowers are round and flat, with brilliant color, produced on mini plants. The Slc. Circle of Life will influence flower size and shape. These will look a bit like large Soph. coccinea, a nice and different mini-cat. 3”pots .

** Some pictures are representative of the cross and not actual parents.
